St. Philip’s Architectural Symbolism

with Penn Hagood, Senior Warden

Sunday, September 24 ~ 9:30 a.m. in the Parish Hall

“Architecture is an emblem of the invisible abstract, no less than Holy Baptism and the Lord’s Supper.”

William Durandus, Bishop of Mende, c. 1286 A.D.

Come and learn how the architectural symbolism of St. Philip’s Church proclaims the Gospel story and reveals the mystical union between God and His people, how its creators sought to have “the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might.” Ephesians 1:18-19. Come and see!

Last-Minute Call for Help: Warm Socks Needed

Children's and adult sizes ~ Drop off through September 27

Bethea Long will be headed back to Ukraine next week to continue his volunteer work assisting nurses and doctors treating civilians injured in the war. There is a sock shortage in Ukraine, and with the cold weather coming, he has been asked to gather warm socks (both children's and adult sizes) to take back with him. Bring to church or drop off in the church office through September 27.

Opportunities to Connect

Foyer Groups

Simple monthly gatherings with fellow St. Philippians

Looking for a great way to get to know others in the St. Philip’s family? Consider joining a Foyer Group! “Foyer” is a French word meaning “hearthside”––implying the warmth of a close, small group of friends sharing a common friendship. Whether you are longtime St. Philippian or a relative newcomer, we encourage you to participate to help strengthen the bonds of affection in our church family.

A Foyer Group will consist of eight to ten persons, married or single, assigned at random, and meeting, on a rotating basis, in each other’s homes once a month for about six months, to share a meal, conversation and fellowship, beginning in the fall and spring. You do not have to be a good cook or have a large home to participate! These are strictly social evenings and the keynote is simplicity. There is no agenda, other than having dinner and fellowship for a few hours.

How Many Constitute a Rash?

While the rest of Charleston was caught up in F35gate, St. Philip's was caught up in its own little situation: a rash of earring-findings!

After having gone over two-and-a-half years without finding a single single earring (that is, not even one earring by itself and not in a pair), we found TWO in the space of a few hours.

We wish we could offer an explanation for this explosion in the rate of lost/found earrings, but we unfortunately have none. We can tell you, however, that we believe we have found the rightful owner of the earring found near the south gate––a trusted member of the St. Philip's family––so you can let go of any conspiracy theories you may have been entertaining.

If you follow St. Philip's on social media, you already knew about this odd spike in earring-findings. If you don't, why don't you take a minute right now to give us a follow so that you, too, can be among the first to hear about schedule changes, special events, and office oddities?

Sunday's Readings

Collect for Sunday:

O Lord, who hast taught us that all our doings without charity are nothing worth: Send thine Holy Ghost and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of charity, the very bond of peace and of all virtues, without which whosoever liveth is counted dead before thee; grant this for the sake of Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the same Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Readings for Sunday:

  • Philippians 1:21-27
  • Psalm 145:14–21
  • Matthew 20:1-16
