A Lighthouse to the World
St. Philip's Annual Parish Meeting
Thank you to all the St. Philippians who filled the Parish Hall on Sunday! We attended the Annual Parish Meeting virtually last year, so it was especially wonderful to enjoy the privilege of meeting in person for such an important event––and indeed it was a day not to be missed!
Those who heard the Rector’s Address know that St. Philip’s has the potential to be a lighthouse to the world, to offer worship that glorifies and facilitates excitement about the Lord. They got to see some of that excitement in action while watching a slideshow that showed a very active parish: Children’s Church, grandparenting events, young adult gatherings, youth retreats and service projects, weddings, baptisms, and more.
We received a legal update and heard a very positive report about giving from the Finance Committee. We offered the warmest of thanks to the Vestry Class of 2022, this year’s outgoing Vestry members, who have faithfully served our parish since 2019: Senior Warden Todd Brown, Elizabeth Hagood, Connie Rink, and Bill Warlick. The Vestry Class of 2025 was also voted in; we thank Foster Gaillard, Langdon Hartsock, Penn Hagood, and Jill Settle for answering the call to serve!
Parishioners also learned that sabbatical does not have to be a scary word. Yes, the Rev. Jeffrey S. Miller is taking one this summer, but he will be back––St. Philip’s is where the action is, after all!
If you missed this special day and would like a copy of the 2021 Annual Report, please stop by the church office. Would you like to watch the slideshow? Click the link below! But first, go ahead and mark your calendar for March 5, 2023, the date of our next Parish Annual Meeting––don’t let yourself miss out again!

Did Someone Say Pancakes?
by David Louis Gilbert, St. Philip's Youth Minister
Pancakes ... or maybe you prefer one of the synonyms of pancake: flapjack, griddlecake, hotcake, slapjack––whichever you relate to, we served them up with the passion ... of lumberjacks! Plain pancakes, blueberry pancakes, gluten-free pancakes, a half-ton of bacon, sausage, and one giant fruit bowl equals one thing: a successful Shrove Tuesday celebration!
St. Philip’s youth group members teamed up with Justin Ray (aka Big Daddy Pancake) and Chef Connie to host the event. We started our evening off with a prayer of preparation for the night and the season of Lent. We set the tone with some Mardis Gras New Orleans jazz pumping over the sound system, and we decorated the tables with the appropriate colors (purple, green, and yellow), beads, masks, and coins!
Each youth grouper helped decorate, and then we crewed our battle stations to put service on with a smile. We had a back-of-the-house crew doing dishes, taking out the trash, making blueberry pancakes with Big Daddy Pancake, and mopping the kitchen. Our front-of-the-house team served food, ran food, maintained the drink station, bussed tables, and then helped clean up at the end of the night. The secret to our success and efficiency is not cracking the iron whip, like some crazy restaurant owners do, but instead cracking jokes, smiles, and a whole lot of fun! It was a joy to serve and honor our faithful parishioners. Our youth group loves to serve and show the congregation our love and devotion to Jesus and our church family!
On behalf of the St. Philip’s Youth Group, we want to wish everyone a Holy Lent full of sacrifice, service, repentance, prayer, almsgiving, truth, and Scripture study!
In Christ,
David Gilbert & The Youth Volunteers

Tea Room Volunteer Sign-Up is Open!
St. Philip’s Tea Room: May 2-6, 11:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. daily
A message from Tea Room co-chairs Amanda Ayers and Ashley Warnock: The Tea Room is St. Philip’s largest fundraiser for various church ministries, and more importantly, it remains a great way to get to know other church members while serving God and the community. Whether you prefer to make desserts or soup at home or wish to join us in the dining room, kitchen, or gift shop, we hope you will consider giving us a little bit of your time. We need many volunteers to make the week successful.
Volunteer signup forms, along with return instructions, are being mailed this week, but you don't have to wait for the mailman to come to sign up! Click the link below for convenient online signup. There's a place for everyone, so please review the options and consider where you can volunteer your talents! Curious what the waiters, greeters, and kitchen helpers actually do? You can find that out on our website!
Okra soup time! We need your help making our famous okra soup! Aluminum containers with covers are available at the church office, and we are accepting soup now through opening day. Please follow the recipe below.
Note: Before delivering the soup to the church, please freeze it in an aluminum pan provided by the church (available in the church office) and contact sexton Ben Singleton during church office hours only at (843) 475-9765 to arrange drop-off at the Parish House freezer. One pan can hold one batch of soup.
