Godly Grandparenting Matters:
Praying Scripture

Luke 23:44-49
During his time on earth, Jesus gave many examples of prayer, which are recorded in the Gospels. Jesus’ final words before he gave up his spirit are familiar to many of us. We meditate on them in our Lenten devotionals, and we hear them read aloud on Good Friday or Easter morning.
These words have tremendous significance, if not for the sheer effort it must have taken for our Lord to articulate them. Speaking caused excruciating pain. He had to lift his body by his arms and legs, which were anchored to the cross by huge spikes, draw in a quick breath and force a sound through his vocal cords.
Why did Jesus speak if it caused him so much pain?
When we cross-reference his final words with verses of the Old Testament, we discover that these are not the babblings of a dying man. They are the thoughts King David wrote a thousand years before our Lord was born. Jesus turned to the Word of God in his greatest hour of need. He isn’t just reciting Scripture here. He is praying it! Some scholars believe he prayed the entire book of Psalms while hanging on the cross. (This isn’t the first time Jesus used God’s Word to battle with Satan. During his forty days in the desert, he countered Satan’s temptations with “It is written…” as recorded in Matthew 4.)

Intentional Grandparenting Conference to
Return to Charleston Next Year
by Jane McGreevy. Generations Ministry Co-Chair
|
|
Cavin Harper (left), founder of the Christian Grandparenting Network; Sherry Schumann (right), president of the Christian Grandparenting Network; and Dr. Larry McCall, director of Walking Like Jesus Ministries, were the speakers at last weekend’s conference. Photos by Joy Hunter.
The Southeastern Intentional Grandparenting Conference last weekend was so inspirational! We were continually exhorted to remember the privilege and responsibility we have to share the gospel with our children and grandchildren. The conference was a mix of teaching sessions with speakers Larry McCall, Cavin Harper, and Sherry Schumann, and breakout sessions, when we could share ideas with other grandparents. Of course, the speakers, one of whom came all the way from Colorado, were smitten with Charleston, and at the end of the conference, they announced they plan to come back next year––we hope to take a large St. Philip’s contingent with us then!

Back by Popular Demand
LAF:SPC
|
|
Production on new episodes of "Lost and Found: St. Philip's Church" was halted almost a year and a half ago, but the fan favorite is BACK for a limited run. Here's what you need to know: the missing items––a red Bible and a set of car keys––were both last seen in the Parish Hall (a few weeks apart, but you never know which details may be relevant!). Could you please check your purse or backpack to make sure you didn't accidentally pick them up?
Of course, what would an episode of LAF:SPC be without exploring the other side of the LAF coin? Many found items have turned up in the past several months: shirts, pants, a single toddler shoe, reading glasses, a Moon Pie, sunglasses, Tervis cups, and more. Call the church office to report your missing item or claim something we’ve found! Be prepared to answer questions to confirm rightful ownership: brand of sunglasses, expiration date of packaged snack, size of pants, etc.
If you'd like to be among the first to hear about what St. Philippians have lost and found, which four-legged friends have popped in for a visit, and what kinds of things kids are drawing on their service bulletins these days, be sure to give us a follow! You'll also get reminders of upcoming events and be among the first to hear time-sensitive news, such as weather-related schedule updates. What are you waiting for?
