Thanksgiving for a Long Obedience in
One Direction: A Tribute to Gerry McCord
by Susan C. Keller, World Missions Committee
|
|
“If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday.” Isaiah 58:10
|
|
This past December marked 25 years that Gerry McCord has served St. Philip’s as chair of the World Missions Committee at St. Philip’s. That is twenty-five years! Also in December, Gerry stepped down from this role, and I will be stepping into it. As I considered this task, I marveled at Gerry and at his servant’s heart through these many years. Gerry lives his life for the Kingdom in the spirit of another beloved saint of God who has gone on to be with the Lord, Gene Lesesne. Both quiet, humble, sacrificial, very behind-the-scenes kind of guys, but always quietly working in ways that impact lives for Jesus.

Gerry McCord (left) with Miles Barkley and Brian McGreevy in Haiti in 2012
Did you know, for example, that Gerry has led a mission team to Haiti from St. Philip’s every year since 1995? And since 1995, he has helped sustain a Haitian-American partnership with a number of U.S. churches throughout the southeast, in which each U.S. church has a sister church in Haiti. Gerry served as regional director of church partners from 1996-2010 and then served as director for all U.S. and Haiti partners from 2010-2012. Gerry’s leadership in this partnership of churches eventually grew to the formation of the non-profit La Gonâve Haiti Partners in 2013, of which St. Philip’s is still a partner with our sister church St. John the Baptist in Haiti.

Thank You for Un-Greening!
|
|
With many key volunteers and staff members staying home last week due to pesky ... cold-like symptoms (or exposure to friends or family with cold-like symptoms), we found ourselves in urgent need of helping hands come 9:00 Friday morning, when the un-greening of the church was scheduled to begin.
We put out the call via email, Facebook, and Instagram, and before we knew it, all the help we needed had arrived! Thank you so much to Caroline Burns, Neyse Barkley, Jane Jilich, and Kat Phillips for leading the way, and thank you to all who answered the call and worked so tirelessly until the job was done! We are so grateful for you!

New Offering for Women:
The Gospel-Centered Parent
Wednesdays beginning January 12 ~ 4:00 p.m. in the Parish House, room 111
Leaders: Leah Simmons, Beth Bailey
|
|
This class is a time of fellowship, encouragement, and spiritual growth that meets during the children’s choirs’ Wednesday rehearsals.
About The Gospel-Centered Parent, written by Rose Marie Miller, Deborah Harrell, and Jack Klumpenhower: “Our children are precious to us, so naturally we want to protect them and guarantee their safety and happiness. We want to get it right, so our children will be all right. But we live in a broken world where things don’t always (or never?) go as planned. Children make mistakes and, if they are honest, parents know they make mistakes too. So it’s easy for parents to live in fear, regret, confusion, and sometime hopelessness about parenting and the children they love. Is there a better way? Can you learn to live by faith, to trust the God who made you and your children with their past, present, and future? How can Christian parents live by faith as they parent their children?”

Saturday, January 15, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Join Brian McGreevy and Andrew O’Dell for a two-day Spiritual Gifts Workshop at St. Philip's! Lunch will be provided on Saturday. Questions? Drop Joy a line.
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 1 Corinthians 12:4-7

Fervent: A Women’s Study of Prayer
Tuesdays at 8:00 a.m in the Parish Hall ~ February 8–March 15
Leaders: Margaret Donaldson and Charlotte Williams
|
|
Does your prayer life need a boost? Join Margaret
and Charlotte as we embark on a 6-week study of
the Priscilla Shirer book Fervent. We will take a
hard look at what the enemy wants us to believe
about ourselves, our families, our identities, our
relationships, our pasts, and our fears. By studying
what the Bible tells us about the power of prayer
and the Father to whom we pray for all things, we
will form a battle plan for serious prayer.
Bring your Bible and a notebook to our first meeting
on February 8 at 9:00 in the Parish Hall. We will
have your books for you.

December High Tea and Theology
|
|
On December 20, the Rev. Bill Christian visited some ladies at Sandpiper in Mt. Pleasant for another edition of High Tea and Theology. They enjoyed each other’s company immensely as they sipped on tea and discussed this month’s topic, the Feast of the Incarnation, and anything else that came up!

Christmas at St. Philip’s––Watch or Rewatch!
|
|
Christmas Eve 2021 was much the same at St. Philip’s as it’s been in years past: Christmas pageant at 4:30 followed by two services of Festival Holy Eucharist complete with a live nativity scene outside. Our rector, the Rev. Jeffrey S. Miller, delivered “Some Good News for a Change,” but some more good news is that if you had to miss one or more of the services, you can still watch them on our YouTube channel!

Official First-Name Basis
|
|
When our cemetery guard cat first reported for duty, he was quite a mystery. What was his name? How old was he? Where did he live? What was his expected salary?
As time went on, we learned a little bit more about him. For example, he's the definition of self-motivated, picking up extra duties anywhere he can get them. Parking enforcement? On it. Wedding crowd control? It's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it––and he's on it.
And then, finally, he showed up to work sporting some new hardware around his neck, and we learned his name!
St. Philippians, allow us to introduce you officially to our newest part-time staffer, Charlie!
If you see him on campus, please thank him for his diligence and give him a little scratch behind his ears. And tell him we'll need an address to send him his 1099.
|
|
If you're just now meeting Charlie, it sounds like you have some catching up to do! Give us a follow on Facebook and Instagram, and miss out no more!
