Let Us Welcome the Recently Baptized!
Baptism is not only a sign of profession, and mark of difference, whereby Christian men are discerned from others that be not christened, but it is also a sign of Regeneration or New-Birth, whereby, as by an instrument, they that receive Baptism rightly are grafted into the Church; the promises of the forgiveness of sin, and of our adoption to be the sons of God by the Holy Ghost, are visibly signed and sealed; Faith is confirmed, and Grace increased by virtue of prayer unto God.
––Article XXVII “Of Baptism,” The Book of Common Prayer
Pandemic restrictions have kept our congregation from witnessing several recent baptisms, so we are sharing the happy news here! Let us welcome into Christ’s one holy catholic and apostolic Church these children who have been recently baptized:
Thomas Chiles Anderson, son of Thomas and Boykin Anderson, was baptized on August 30 by the Rev. Jeffrey Miller.
Twins Thomas Cumming Connolly and Sadie Livingston Connolly, the son and daughter of Thomas and Lauren Connolly, were baptized on September 20 by the Rev. Justin Hare.
Frances Ryan Emerson, daughter of Ryan and Jennie Emerson, was baptized on September 27 by the Rev. Justin Hare.
Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon these your servants the forgiveness of sin, and have raised them to the new life of grace. Sustain them, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give them an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen.

St. Philip's 1978 Organ Console Gets a 2020 Rebuild
by Chris Walchesky, Assistant Director of Music
Over the past two weeks, you’ve likely noticed our increased use of the piano and the gallery organ at the back of the church. The reason for this change was that our main organ console, located in the chancel, had been gutted and sent to the organbuilders’ shop in Denver, North Carolina, for refurbishment. This organ, our third in this building, was built in 1978 by the firm Casavant Frères of Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec. Earlier this year, St. Philip’s contracted with Cornel Zimmer Organ Builders of Denver to refurbish the 1978 console. This same firm has been at work over the past years bringing the Citadel’s Summerall Chapel pipe organ back to life.

"Mere Christianity" Wednesday Evening Class Is Coming Soon!
A note from the Rev. Brian McGreevy
Mere Christianity began as a series of radio talks during the darkest days of World War II in England. Lewis was asked by the BBC to do the talks because so many people were living in fear and anxiety and were feeling that the world was crumbling around them, that "the wheels had come off the bus." Our culture today is beset with many of those same anxieties, albeit for different reasons. Lewis's broadcast talks were then edited by Lewis and published in book form as Mere Christianity. The book is still remarkably fresh today and serves as an encouragement to the believer, a winsome challenge to the doubter, and an effective apologetic for the unbeliever.
If you would like to begin reading the book, I would encourage you to get a copy and read one chapter aloud and then let that chapter "percolate" for a day or two before reading the next one. The chapters are short but packed, and it is easy to get lost if you read too much too quickly. Because the book was originally broadcast in serial format, reading one chapter at a time and doing so out loud will help you recapture the pace Lewis intended.
Class will initially meet via Zoom; further details are forthcoming. If you would like to join the Rev. Brian McGreevy's email list, please click here to contact him and let him know.
