Sunday of the Passion: Palm Sunday
| |
A Prayer for Our Nation Following the Covenant School Shooting in Nashville
Lord Jesus Christ, in these dark and difficult days we turn our hearts to you. In ages past you have delivered our nation from disaster. Do it again, we pray. Give wisdom beyond human wisdom to our leaders. Give comfort beyond human comfort to children and the elderly and all who grieve. Lord, Jesus Christ, in these dark and difficult days, turn your face towards us, have mercy upon us, and heal our land, we pray. Amen.

The 2023 Walk for Water ~ Saturday, March 25, 2023
by Hamlin O’Kelley, Team St. Philip’s Co-Captain
| |
Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” ––John 4:13-14
On a windy, sunny, gorgeous Saturday, 140+ St. Philippians walked for water. The seventeenth annual Walk for Water supporting Water Mission, one of St. Philip’s home and world mission ministry partners, raised almost $500,000.00 by almost 5,000 walkers, of whom we made up two percent.
As I was carrying the St. Philip’s banner into Riverfront Park that morning, one of George Greene’s grandsons saw me, gave me the thumbs up, and said, “That’s the best team!” Both he and we may be biased.
Supporting the Greene family’s mission of providing safe drinking water to those in need, we walked, talked, carried buckets, and acknowledged just how good we have it.

Are you feeling joyful at this moment? You may feel like there is not much to be joyful about in today’s world. So much that we hear or read about in the news today is frightening: war, inflation, viruses, the border, post COVID-19 pandemic challenges, gasoline prices, food prices, crime, attacks on police officers, racism, gender identification, government corruption and many other issues in today’s culture.
Even though we live in a fallen world today and have to face an occasional challenge, we still have much to be joyful about. But where do we find joy? We find it from the assurance that our faith, which comes from our Creator’s grace, is the hope that we can look forward to a better life. This is the gift of peace that we can pay forward brought about by the freedom we enjoy from our salvation. A freedom that insulates us from the daily cares others must face.

Pets, Paws, and a Parade on St. Patrick's Day
Our part-time office helper, Gus, finally showed up to work on Friday, March 17, after several weeks of working remotely. Since it was almost spring, he spent most of his time in the Tea Garden courtyard readying it for the new season, reminding the squirrels, lizards, and birds that they were not welcome and replenishing his supply of buried bully sticks.
He was pleasantly surprised at about 11:00 when two of his coworkers, Zippy Hood and Chris Walchesky, appeared on the Queen Street sidewalk just outside the Tea Garden gate, and he ran down the pathway to greet them. They stayed there for a few minutes just to give him pets through the gate and work on his trick repertoire (Miss Zippy is trying to teach a southpaw that his right paw is also a perfectly suitable offering when someone requests a paw). Coincidentally, very shortly after that, several men in green jackets, led by pipers and flag bearers, came parading down Queen Street. How exciting—and loud!
If you follow St. Philip's on social media, you already knew about Gus's St. Paddy's Day visit. But if this is the first you're hearing about it, why don't you take a moment right now to like and follow us on Facebook and Instagram so that you, too, can be among the first to hear about upcoming events, schedule changes, and all the details about our furry helpers?
