New C.S. Lewis Class Begins September 22
Not as Unwise but as Wise:
Reflections from C.S. Lewis’s The Abolition of Man and That Hideous Strength on Living Christianly in a Post-Christian World
7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays ~ Philadelphia Alley
|
|
Following worship and supper on Wednesday evenings beginning on September 22, head to Philadelphia Alley (behind the Parish House) for the Rev. Brian McGreevy’s new C.S. Lewis class!
Lewis’s book The Abolition of Man is widely considered to be his most prophetic and perhaps even his most important nonfiction work. Lewis himself called it “almost my favorite among my books.” One example of its significance is the fact that National Review selected it as seventh on its list of “The 100 Best Nonfiction Books of the Century.” Lewis believed that the Western world was in the process of rejecting the natural law foundation of objective right and wrong and the existence of Truth, which would eventually amount to the collapse of society and usher in a dystopian reality in which Christianity was marginalized. In the foreword to his novel That Hideous Strength, Lewis says it is a fictionalized story that seeks to illustrate the main points he makes in The Abolition of Man. Join us as we unpack the important themes in these eerily relevant books and reflect on what they mean for us today in terms of living boldly for Christ in an increasingly secular age. Questions? Contact the Rev. Brian McGreevy at (854) 429-1938 or bmcgreevy@stphilipschurchsc.org.

Hymn Sing:
Request Your Favorites and Support the St. Philip’s Choir
October 3 at 5:00 p.m. in the church
|
|
Do you have a favorite hymn? Or is it hard to pick just one? On October 3, the St. Philip’s Choir is available to sing all of your favorites so you don’t have to choose!
Each request is $10, which will support the choir as they prepare for their residency at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London next summer. Would you like something special? You may request a particular descant or organ accompaniment for a donation of $25. Of course, any amount over that is greatly appreciated! And the choir tithes, so ten percent of donations received will be given to the church.

Pinheads, Church St. Strikers, and Holy Rollers All Tied Up
|
|
On the evening of Thursday, September 2, members of the St. Philip’s clergy and staff donned their socks and bowling clothes and headed over to The Alley on Columbus St. for some off-campus fellowship ahead of the very busy season that kicks off this week with Rally Sunday.
After braving the shoe counter, all got situated in lanes for a couple of practice rounds. We monkeyed around with various ball sizes and spin techniques while working out the kinks in our approaches and follow-throughs. We debated whether blue cheese or ranch is the best accompaniment for buffalo tater tots and whether or not fried eggs belong on burgers.
And then we got down to business. Members of the Pinheads, Church St. Strikers, and Holy Rollers were randomly assigned, but after strike after strike after strike, it became clear that the teams didn’t matter––because all players ended up with perfect scores of 300!
It was so nice to see everyone outside of the church office, and what a pleasant surprise that we are all such fabulous bowlers! If you happen to see any video footage of any gutter balls or hear about anything less than a strike, then obviously it happened in one of the practice rounds––because, as we stated earlier, we definitely all bowled perfect games.

The Importance of Getting Out the Zoomies
|
|
National Dog Day was August 26, so all of our office helpers had the day off, of course. But that meant that when they came into work the next day, they were feeling very ... energetic.
The technical term for this state is "the zoomies," and the only way to get rid of them and ensure a productive work day is to chase a ball and/or friend for several minutes. Be careful that you don't overexert yourself and end up snoring through the rest of your day like Gus almost did! At least he was awake long enough to oversee the final communications with the printer folks, and we are pleased to announce that our replacement production printer was delivered last week! Thank you for your hard work, Gus! And thank you to Windsor, who went straight to work on the organ after getting out her zoomies––no nap required.
If you follow St. Philip's on social media, you already knew the importance of getting out the zoomies. If this is news to you, why don't you take a minute to click the buttons below and follow us right now so that you, too, can be among the first to get this type of info?
