What’s Your Blood Donation Story?

Help Us Reach Our Goal of 44 Pints Donated and 132 Lives Saved at Our Summer Blood Drive!

Tuesday, June 27 ~ 12:00–6:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall

Every unit we donate at our blood drive can help save up to three lives. Each recipient of that blood donation has his or her own story. He or she could be an accident or trauma victim, cancer patient, a mother giving birth, a premature baby, a transplant recipient, or a surgical candidate. Our impact goes beyond that patient––it is multiplied by the impact it has on that person’s loved ones who are thankful for the unit we donated.

The American Red Cross could not meet patient needs and touch all of those lives if it were not for organizations like St. Philip’s Church. We are proud to support our community and our country and to be a part of the impact that the Red Cross makes every day.

Our June 27 blood drive collection goal is 44. Think about all of the lives we can touch by signing up to donate! A typical donation takes less than one hour, but if you can’t give, you can still make an impact by volunteering to support the drive and encouraging others to sign up using your social media channels and network.

Remember that every blood donation has a story attached to it: the story of why we donated, each volunteer’s story of why they helped, the story of why we hosted the blood drive, and the recipient’s story when they receive a generous donation. Consider making your personal story part of that collection.

Sign up to donate or volunteer and learn all about what to expect if you’re a first-time donor at the links below!

Shine the Light Campaign Update

We officially kicked off the Shine the Light Campaign on April 30th during the Rector’s Forum. Since then, we have been blessed with additional pledges. Each parishioner should have picked up a packet that day or received one in the mail.

We have an ambitious goal and are encouraged by the results up to now. We have pledges and contributions that amount to 55% of the goal of $20.5 million. To date, we have 17% of our parishioners participating, but our goal is for 100% participation. If you have not pledged, we are asking that you do so soon. We are allowing up to a three-year pledge (2023 through 2025). If you have any questions, please contact our co-chairs, Maybank Hagood or Karen Phillips: mhagood@sddholdings.com or phillipskj10@gmail.com.

Team-Building and Big Ideas at Staff Planning Retreat on Edisto

Thanks to the generosity of two St. Philippian families who lent out their homes, the ministry team was able to gather together for two days on Edisto Island last week to debrief 2022-2023, brainstorm about dreams, and figure out how to spread those dreams across the 2023-2024 calendar.

Even in the midst of planning, there was time for fun and fellowship. During a five-minute break late morning on day one, Justin Hare donned a pair of swim trunks and ran triathlon-style to the end of the dock, managing to squeeze in several jumps into Bailey Creek before it was time to towel off and rejoin the group. (He did not have time to style his hair, which you can tell from the picture above.)

Pray for Martha Vetter in Rwanda

Martha Vetter will be visiting the Dufatanye Organization, one of St. Philip’s World Missions ministry partners in Rwanda, June 8–30. Please pray for travel mercies for Martha, for warm and comfortable interactions with old friends and former students, and for successful Bible lessons, and pray that the Lord’s Spirit would order her steps and guide her conversations.

A Prayer for Travelers

O God, our heavenly Father, whose glory fills the whole creation, and whose presence we find wherever we go: Preserve those who travel, especially Martha Vetter in Rwanda and those St. Philippians walking in Jesus’ footsteps in the Holy Land; surround them with your loving care; protect them from every danger; and bring them in safety to their journey’s end; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Cheraw Parish Thanks St. Philip’s for

Gift of Communion Silver

Dear St. Philip’s,

On behalf of St. David’s Cheraw, I cannot thank you all enough for the amazing gift of new communion silver. We have been given many thoughtful gifts, but this has meant the most. When we left our historic building behind, we also left our historic communion silver. We celebrated communion with our new silver for the first time this past Easter. We are so grateful and feel so loved by St. Philip’s.

In Christ,

The Rev. Jason Varnadore

Rector, St. David’s Anglican Church

Scaffolding Is on the Way Out!

The familiar sight of the scaffolding surrounding the sanctuary will soon be but a memory! The construction crew is working on removing all the scaffolding now, and soon afterwards, our graveyard will be open to visitors during office hours and services for the first time in several years. Praise the Lord!

It’s the Anthocyanins

Despite what the picture appears to be showing, our young sexton-in-training, Cecilia Walchesky, was NOT in the middle of touching up the dye on the oriental runner on the second floor of the church office building. No, Miss Walchesky was simply exhibiting the perils of eating frozen blueberries with something other than a spoon (or fork or spork). And while it seems everything with fabric in the office came away unscathed (well, at least everything that was not Miss Walchesky's dress), we will likely be more careful when dispensing frozen blueberries in the future.

If you follow St. Philip's on social media, you already knew about Miss Walchesky's messy snack choice (and perhaps––out of curiosity––looked up what causes the staining). But if this is the first you're hearing of it, don't you think you should take a moment right now to give us a follow so that you, too, can be the first to hear about upcoming events, schedule changes, and the culinary adventures of the church office?
