Andrew O’Dell Releases Four-Song EP Act II
What does a priest do on a three-month sabbatical? Well, if he’s a priest whose ambitions listed on his senior yearbook page were “to one day love God with all of my heart and soul and mind” and “to become a Rock n Roll star with good morals,” he just might pick up his guitar and record a few songs!
In fact, that’s exactly what our own Andrew O’Dell did last summer, and he officially released his four-song extended play (EP), Act II, on December 31. What a way to close out 2023!
|
Andrew wrote and rewrote the four songs over a span of almost 30 years: two when he was in college, one when he and his wife, Ellen, were expecting their first child in the early 2000s (that child, Lily, provided backing vocals on that track!), and the last just a couple of years ago. And if not for an encounter last year with Patrick Schlabs, Canon for Cultural Engagement at the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul, those songs may have remained works-in-progress––on paper or for Andrew’s own ears only.

The Rev. Vaughan Roberts to Preach
at St. Philip’s January 21
We are very pleased to announce that the Rev. Vaughan Roberts, who will be preaching at Mere Anglicanism’s Festival Eucharist service on January 19, will also be preaching at our 8:15 and 10:30 a.m. services on January 21!
Mr. Roberts is the Rector of St. Ebbe’s Church, Oxford. He studied law at Cambridge and was President of the Cambridge Inter-Collegiate Christian Union as an undergraduate. Following mission work in South Africa, he did graduate studies in Theology at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford, and was ordained a priest in the Church of England.
Mr. Roberts is the author of a number of Christian books, including Turning Points, Distinctives, Battles Christians Face, True Worship, Life’s Big Questions and God’s Big Picture. Since 2009, he has been the director of the Proclamation Trust, an evangelical Christian association dedicated to training preachers in expository preaching. He is also a member of the executive committee of 9:38 Ministries, a non-profit seeking to raise up Gospel workers and pastors.

God Is My Coxswain
Musings from a recreational rower amidst the popularity of “The Boys in the Boat”
by Pam Dickson
In a rowing shell, the coxswain (“cox’n” or simply “cox”) is the one who tells you what to do every step of the way—when to put “hands on” to lower the boat off the storage rack, when to heft it onto your shoulders, when to walk forward with it, when to “weigh enough” (stop!), and when to roll the boat down into the water. The coxswain says when to run your oars and when to step into the boat. Once the people in the boat shout “ready!” (meaning they have checked their gear, buckled on their shoes, and are sitting ready to row), the coxswain is the one who tells them when to push off from the dock. The cox then tells the rowers which of them should row, when they should paddle, and when to go full force. In a race, the coxswain tells them how to get to the starting line and makes the calls to get them over the finish line. On a casual rowing day, the coxswain chooses the course and the intensity of the row.

All Iguanas Are Lizards, but not All Lizards Are Iguanas | |
As anyone who's stopped by the church office in the weeks leading up to Christmas knows, Advent is an extremely busy time at St. Philip's. (And that's a lot of you ... our full hearts and tummies thank you, but our expanding waistlines would like to have a word.)
Advent is also an unusual time to add to the staff, but we did it nonetheless. Albert the Lizard (or is he an iguana?) joined the music department via Secret Santa in December, and he immediately got to work making a good impression by showing up early to staff meeting. And even though the staff meeting experience was a tad ... overwhelming, Albert was undeterred. He looked for ways to be helpful to his music department colleagues––he even ventured outside his department into communication and took it upon himself to promote the new semester of Foundations on social media! (Well-done, Albert––that class is FULL!)
If you follow us on social media, Albert is old news. But if you don't, why not take a minute right now to give us a follow so that you, too, can be among the first to hear about schedule changes, special events, and the latest reptilian helpers?
