Acolytes Get Trained Up in the
Way They Should Go
Acolyte training this past Sunday, October 29, brought together children and youth from the 4th grade all the way through to 12th grade to go over general training as well as some of the finer points of serving in worship.
Their time together began in the Parish Hall, where everyone enjoyed pizza (which acolyte parents Sheila and Michael Lauffer generously provided) and fellowship before getting an overview of acolyte roles from the Rev. Bill Christian––as well as expectations, such as wearing appropriate footwear along with their vestments. Two young ladies were able to hold up their own shoes as an example of “attractive flats or other dressy shoes with a low heel.”
In the sanctuary, the group went over their various duties, such as leading the processions as crucifer or torch bearer, lighting and extinguishing candles, and assisting clergy with getting ready for communion. “The level of excitement and enthusiasm from both the new and older acolytes was palpable!” shared Father Bill.
If you have a child in 4th–12th-grades who has not yet signed up to serve as an acolyte, please call or email Alice Smith in the church office (843-722-7734) to get him or her added to the team!

Dufatanye Organization Installs Water Purification
System Sponsored by St. Philip’s Church
In Rwanda on October 24, the Dufatanye Organization, one of St. Philip’s world missions ministry partners, had a gathering of about 300 people––including leaders from the province, district, sector and cell––to celebrate the new clean water available to thousands of people! They shared this wonderful news over Facebook:
“In partnership with St. Philip’s Church Charleston, SC, USA, we’ve brought clean water to Nyamagana Village of Hope and three more villages, Gatsinsino, Gakenyeri and Kigarama, ending years of water struggles. No more waterborne diseases, thanks to the generosity of St. Philip’s ... Together, we’ve made a life-changing impact!”

Calling All Crafters!

Our hope is to have several evenings for the women of the church to come together in fellowship and fun while stocking our gift shop.
Contact Caroline Fitzgerald at (843) 696-5843 if you are interested in filling this need!

It's Called Semantic Satiation | |
You know that feeling of dread you get when you're scrolling through Instagram at 11:45 p.m. and see that people have been posting about whatever the current national holiday is (National Sons Day, National Daughters Day, National Donut Day, National Dog Day, National Cat Day, etc.), but you didn't know about the holiday and didn't post anything about it?
Well, we don't know that feeling because we're always totally aware of all of those "holidays" holidays, and close to midnight is just when we sometimes prefer to post our Instagram stories. Yes, October 29 is National Cat Day, so we of course had to give a shout-out to our cemetery guard cat, Charlie, who's been lying a little low lately, although he did pick up a shift last Wednesday, making sure everyone was behaving and respecting the grounds following the service, supper, C.S. Lewis class, and final Spiritual Warfare class.
Did you miss National Cat Day this year? Allow yourself a bit of grace, and try to remember that it always comes two days before Reformation Day (October 31), when our rector's great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather (not sure how many greats it actually is, but that word is starting to lose all meaning), Martin Luther, nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the door of All Saints' Church in Wittenberg.
If you follow St. Philip's on social media, you already knew about National Cat Day, and you know that it was Chris Walchesky who reminded us of our rector's Lutheran ancestry. But if you don't, why don't you take a minute right now to give us a follow so that you, too, can be among the first to hear about schedule changes, special events, and extremely important national holidays?
