The Rt. Rev. Charles Edgar III Consecrated as Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of South Carolina

A message from the diocese: We welcome our new Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Chip Edgar, who was consecrated Saturday, March 12, 2022, at the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul. As preacher, the Rev. Dr. Jamey Graham said he’s been “planted to produce,” and we, right alongside, are called to that mission. Let’s commit to praying regularly for our new bishop, his wife, and family, and laboring alongside him to produce fruit in the vineyard to which we’re called.

Bishop Lawrence Expresses Gratitude at Diocesan Convention
|
|
From the diocese: In his final address to the Convention of The Anglican Diocese of South Carolina, Bishop Mark Lawrence thanked various groups for their partnership these last 14 years. “If I have stood firm and at times resolute and perhaps even resilient, it is because you have stood firmly beside me,” he said.
The Convention, which was held Friday, March 11, 2022, at Saint James Anglican Church, Charleston, was shortened to enable the consecration of our new bishop, the Rt. Rev. Chip Edgar, to be held the next day, Saturday, March 12.

Welcome to the St. Philip’s Music Team, Zippy Hood!
|
|
We are very happy to announce that Alexandra “Zippy” Hood is going to be joining the St. Philip’s team this summer as the Associate Music Director!
In the music department’s March 15 video announcement, Zippy said, “One of the things I love about life is getting to know our community. I love getting to know our children, the people here, the families––so I’m looking forward to a great musical season with all of you ... I’m just super blessed to be here.”
Organist and Choirmaster Chris Walchesky said that once the children’s choirs resume in the fall, he and Zippy are going to hit the ground running. “I’m super excited about the fall and for all the things God has in store, and ... I think it’s going to be really fun,” he said.
“It’s going to be amazing,” Zippy agreed.

Abundant Blessings During the LAMB Board Mission to Honduras

At the end of February, five St. Philippians who sit on the board of the LAMB Institute, one of St. Philip’s world mission partners, journeyed to Honduras: Susan Keller, Guv and Tammy Gottshalk, and my wife, Elizabeth, and I. Board member Joanna Macmurphy was involved with upcoming wedding festivities and was unable to make the trek to Tegucigalpa.
We travelled with the other board members, Joseph Klosik of St. Peter’s Mt. Pleasant and Jim McCormick from Dalton, GA, as well as Margaret Merritt, LAMB Executive Director, and Sue Cuthbert, LAMB Development Director. It was the board’s first mission to Honduras since August 2019 and the first group to visit LAMB founder Suzy McCall and the ministries since COVID struck in the spring of 2020.

We were so very blessed by the Most Rev. Dr. Foley Beach's visit with us on Sunday! The Archbishop of the Anglican Church in North America, who was in town for the consecration of Bishop Edgar, made time to preach at both services and speak at the Rector's Forum––all after losing an hour to the time change Saturday night. An Invitation for All Grandparents:
The Southeastern Intentional Grandparenting Conference
April 1-2 ~ St. Paul's Church, Summerville

Deacon Joyce Harder of Christ Church in Mt. Pleasant recently wrote a letter to her congregation, letting them know that she was attending the Southeastern Intentional Grandparenting Conference in April and inviting all grandparents to join her. This except from her letter explains how very important this conference is:
Due to the shifting tides of an increasing secular and technological culture, our current generations of parents and grandparents face a whole new set of challenges in passing on faith in our Triune God to our children and grandchildren. As grandparents in particular, how can we counter the cultural secularization of our grandchildren as we interact with them? How can we bless our grandchildren by modeling and articulating to them that Jesus is Lord and worthy of all praise and loyalty? How can we leave a Christian heritage for generations to come?
Consider God's commands to teach His precepts to the generations below us.
- “…teach them to your children and your grandchildren.” Deuteronomy 4:9 NKJV
- “You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.” Deut 6:7
- “One generation shall praise Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts.” Psalm 145:4
This regional conference is for today's Christian grandparents who want to be inspired and equipped to exercise their unique influence on their grandchildren by passing on their faith and disciplining those precious ones. The lineup of national speakers and workshops is quite compelling, and I sense that participating in this conference will be quite a positive game changer for those who attend and for their families. If you are grandparents, please come! If your parents are grandparents, please invite them to attend!

There's a place for everyone, so please review the options and consider where you can volunteer your talents! Curious what the waiters, greeters, and kitchen helpers actually do? Okra soup time! We need your help making our famous okra soup! Aluminum containers with covers are available at the church office, and we are accepting soup now through opening day. Please follow the recipe below. (If you don't see an image below, you may need to turn images on in your email.)
Note: Before delivering the soup to the church, please freeze it in an aluminum pan provided by the church (available in the church office) and contact sexton Ben Singleton during church office hours only at (843) 475-9765 to arrange drop-off at the Parish House freezer. One pan can hold one batch of soup.

Two sessions are available (campers must have been born after September 1, 2018), and at each session, the children enjoy socializing while engaging in age-appropriate activities. Potential Traffic Alert: St. Patrick's Day
|
|
A note from Rachel Murphy: Tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day, and as such there are two parades taking place downtown for the occasion. The second parade is most impactful for those attending Bible study, but here are details for both events:
- Parade #1 begins at 10 a.m. March 17 outside of St. Patrick Catholic Church at King and Radcliffe streets. It will then travel south on King Street, turn onto Broad and end at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Parts of King, Radcliffe and Broad streets along the parade route will be closed at 8:45 a.m. The parade will conclude around 11:15 a.m.
- Parade #2 will begin at 11:15 a.m. at Hibernian Hall at 105 Meeting St. It will travel south on Meeting Street, East on Broad Street, North on East Bay Street, West on Queen Street and South on Meeting Street back to Hibernian Hall. That celebration is expected to conclude around noon.

Gus and the rest of the furry office helper crew have been lying low recently, so we were so grateful to our young sexton-in-training, Cecilia Walchesky, for helping out with this week's inSPIRE printing. We do have a very dedicated volunteer who comes by each week to get the inSPIREs folded and folded again in preparation for the mailing, but isn't it always helpful to have an extra set of hands on hand?
Now, before you go worrying about Miss Walchesky's salary and whether or not she's going to try to get Juli Garland to bump her up without Vestry approval, know that the communication office provided yesterday's payment of six (6) M & M's and three (3) mandarin orange slices from a personal account––no impact whatsoever on the church budget.
