The Eighteenth Sunday After Pentecost
|
|
Wednesdays Alive! is 100% back! It's been over a year and a half since we enjoyed supper together in the Parish Hall after our midweek service of come-as-you-are Holy Communion––it will be so lovely to enjoy this full evening of worship and fellowship once again! After worship and supper (curry cream chicken over rice!), all adults are invited to Philadelphia Alley for the Rev. Brian McGreevy's new C.S. Lewis class, "Not as Unwise but as Wise: Reflections from The Abolition of Man and That Hideous Strength on Living Christianly in a Post-Christian World." See you tonight!

St. Philippians Give the Gift of Life at the Fall Blood Drive
|
|
Clockwise from top: Home Missions Team members Jennie Richardson and Connie Rink check Amy Anderton in for her appointment; Frank Barnwell was one of the first to donate; Home Missions Team member Gantt Folline was the first-shift greeter.
As of inSPIRE printing time on Tuesday, September 21, 42 of 55 available appointment slots for the blood drive had been filled. If all of those people are able to donate, we will have collected enough blood to save 126 people! We hope to report next week that we had several walk-ins and ended up saving well over that number––stay tuned!
Thank you to the Red Cross and our own Home Missions Team for all the hard work and effort they put into this drive, and to all who took the time to come down and donate or volunteer.

Bishop Coadjutor Walkabout Videos Available for Viewing
|
|
The Very Rev. Chip Edgar III responds to a question from the search committee during the September 15 walkabout at St. Philip’s as the Rev. Rob Sturdy (center) and the Rev. Chris Warner look on. Photo by Joy Hunter, Anglican Diocese of South Carolina.
Last week, the three candidates for bishop coadjutor of our diocese visited churches to meet clergy and delegates and respond to questions. St. Philip’s was honored to host the Very Rev. Chip Edgar III, the Rev. Rob Sturdy, and the Rev. Chris Warner, along with almost 150 clergy and delegates, on the third evening of the walkabouts. The candidates shared their thoughts on Christ and culture, caring for and ministering to clergy, keeping youth engaged after confirmation, and more.
All four sessions were streamed lived, and the recordings are available on the diocesan website, adosc.org. Since the candidates responded to different questions each night, each video will give you further insight on the goals and character of the candidates. Watch at the link below, and please join us in praying for God’s anointing on the next bishop of our diocese, to be elected, God willing, October 16:
Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a Bishop for this Diocese that we may receive a faithful pastor who will preach the Gospel, care for your people, equip us for ministry, and lead us forth in fulfillment of the Great Commission; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Next Month: Fall Workday at Camp St. Christopher
Saturday, October 23 ~ 9:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.
|
|
What might happen at next month’s workday at Camp St. Christopher on Seabrook Island? Will there be a rematch between Robby Marion and the Rev. Jeffrey S. Miller, the two speediest and most accurate mowers this side of the Cooper River? Will Todd “Zero-Turn” Brown ditch the steering wheel and pick up a chainsaw? Will we see alligators (from a distance)? Turtles? Porpoises?
We can’t say for sure––all we know is that it will be a day of weeding, pruning, and clipping, and all the while, we will be enjoying fellowship in the beautiful barrier island setting.
We would love for you to join us! There’s a job for everyone––no matter your age or experience––and lunch is provided! Sign up and learn more at the link below.

“House of Prayer” Prayer Points
by Frenchie Richards, St. Philip’s Prayer Ministry
|
|
In Isaiah 56:7, the Word of God says, “My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations.” We have never needed to remember these words more than right now. My hope is that our church will begin to consider the prayer points offered up below for us to pray. James says in 5:16, “The effective fervent prayers of a righteous man avails much.”
Prayer Points for Local Needs
1. For good health and protection for our clergy and their families.
2. For the grand return of our Wednesday night services on September 22.
3. For God’s choice for our next bishop.
4. For the oral arguments expected to be given to the State Supreme Court regarding the lawsuit against our diocese within the next few weeks. Pray for justice and righteousness to prevail on our behalf.
5. For the virus to end and for those that have it to be healed.
6. For peace for our city:
- for our leadership
- for our police
- for no more violence
- for our businesses to thrive
Prayer Points for All Nations
1. For Afghanistan:
- for all the Christians to get out safely.
- for all the Afghans that helped us to get out safely.
- for wisdom for those making decisions for private evacuations.
- for mercy and protection for those left behind.
- for breakthroughs for the airplanes being blocked from flying those stranded.

Parking Update: New Passes Required
Parishioner passes and bumper stickers will no longer be accepted
|
|
You are likely aware that the lot on the corner of Church and Cumberland Streets is available for free parking during all services and certain church functions. But did you know that you need a pass to park there for meetings with clergy or staff, small-group Bible studies, etc.? If the “church parking only” sign is not out when you park in the lot, please visit the church office for a temporary pass. Palmetto Parking will boot cars without a paid receipt or temporary pass. St. Philip’s bumper stickers and parishioner parking passes are not valid substitutes for the temporary passes currently being distributed.

Hymn Sing:
Request Your Favorites and Support the St. Philip’s Choir
October 3 at 5:00 p.m. in the church
|
|
Do you have a favorite hymn? Or is it hard to pick just one? On October 3, the St. Philip’s Choir is available to sing all of your favorites so you don’t have to choose!
Each request is $10, which will support the choir as they prepare for their residency at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London next summer. Would you like something special? You may request a particular descant or organ accompaniment for a donation of $25. Of course, any amount over that is greatly appreciated! And the choir tithes, so ten percent of donations received will be given to the church.

New Cemetery Guard Cat on Duty
|
|
Did you think you were going to visit the cemetery after hours? Think again––our new guard cat has his eye on you!
Our feline friend, who left his name blank on his application, was on duty two days last week, and not a single instance of trespassing was reported during his shifts. This can of course be attributed to his rather intimidating look, although some of his coworkers have shared that he's actually quite warm and kind.
He's rather mysterious, though––we have not yet learned who referred him to us. But we are ever so grateful for his presence!
|
|
If you follow St. Philip's on social media, you already knew about our new guard cat. But if this is news to you, why don't you take a minute to click the buttons below and follow us right now so that you, too, can be among the first to hear stories like this?
