ATLANTA-March arrives with winter sports season officially ended and all spring sports seeing action in the regular season. Several spring sports teams are ranked in the early polls, including girls' soccer and baseball ranked No. 3 in their respective polls by Score Atlanta. Boys' soccer and boys' lacrosse are in the No. 5 spots in each poll, while girls' lacrosse is ranked No. 8 in the first poll of the year.
Girls' soccer won its only match of the week, traveling to Columbus and taking a 5-2 win. Kate Jannetta scored two goals for the Golden Lions (5-2, 1-0 Region 5-AAAAA). Jessica Burns, Emily Glenn and Charlotte Llop added one goal each in the win. The ladies will travel to Avondale Stadium to take on Cross Keys on Wednesday and host Decatur on Friday, as the team gets back to region play.
Boys' soccer tied Columbus 1-1 on Friday night with Chase Nelson scoring his third goal of the season. St. Pius X (4-1-1, 1-0) will head back into region play with a trip to Cross Keys at Avondale Stadium and hosting Decatur Friday night.
Girls' lacrosse split games to move to 2-2 and 1-1 in Area 1 play. The Golden Lions dropped a 14-10 decision to Wesleyan. Ashley Stephenson scored four goals to pace the squad. The team bounced back with a 16-3 win over Lakeside behind five goals and three assists from Mary Perrin Carpenter and six goals from Adeline Moody. The team is idle this week.
Boys' lacrosse dropped two of three games last week to fall to 5-2. St. Pius X defeated Lakeside, while losing to North Oconee and falling to Benedictine in overtime. Ryan Renno leads the attack with 15 goals and 10 assists on the season. Erik Bakken has added 12 goals. The team travels to Woodward Wednesday before hosting the Baylor School on Saturday.
Girls' tennis split matches last week. The Golden Lions lost 5-0 to Lovett before bouncing back with a 3-2 win over Midtown. Sofia Arboleda and Grace Bradley took single matches and the doubles team of Coleman Sheppard and Nina Shaw won their match. The ladies will host Decatur at Berkeley Hills Country Club in the lone match of the week.
Boys' tennis won both its matches last week over Lovett and Midtown. Aiden McVeigh and Philipp Alting took singles matches against Lovett with the doubles team of Colton Kettering and A.J. Thomasetti took one line in doubles. In the win over Midtown, Luke Williams won the lone single point, as the doubles teams of Reid Bissell and McVeigh and Brennan Hayes and Kettering won both doubles points. The team is in action versus Decatur on Tuesday at Bitsy Grant Tennis Park and travels to Norcross on Wednesday.
Boys' golf finished third at the Lanier Invitational to open its season. Shaun Cook posted a five-under par 67 to lead the team. Carter Kontur shot a 77 and John Madden added a 79 to round out the top three. The Golden Lions will next hit the link at the Kickoff Classic on Saturday in Cordele at Veterans Memorial Golf Course.
Girls' golf posted a 263 to win the Lanier Invitational at TPC Sugarloaf on Monday, February 21. Freshman Betsy Sullivan posted a 76 to take Low Medalist for the tournament. The team will travel to Jekyll Island for the annual Red Terror Ryder Cup hosted by Glynn Academy.
Baseball played in the Georgia Dugout Tournament last week. After dropping a close game to Dunwoody on Friday 4-2, the Golden Lions (1-3) came back and knocked off Campbell on Saturday 1-0 to advance to the pool championship game. The Golden Lions lost the final game to Etowah by a score of 7-0. St. Pius X plays this week hosting Denmark on Wednesday and traveling to Grayson Thursday.
Track & field opened its season at the Parkview All-Comers event. Matthew McElfresh and Jack Kelly finished first and second, respectively, in the shot put. Andy Swartz took first in the 1600-meter run, while Sutter Guttery placed first in the 800m run. Vincent Casal finished second in the 300m hurdles. Liza Love placed second in the girls' 100m hurdles, and Maggie White second in the 1600m run. The team will travel to Mill Creek High School for the Jerry Arnold Challenge on Saturday.
Both basketball teams seasons concluded over the weekend in the second round of the state tournament. The girls' lost to Warner Robins Friday evening, 63-48, while the boys' dropped a 65-64 contest to Jonesboro. The lady cagers finished the season 19-11. The boys' ended 26-4.
