St. Pius X Weekly Sports Release

ATLANTA-For the first time this season, all fall sports were in action during the same week. Football completed the non-region part of its slate last week and softball made its annual trek to Chattanooga. Volleyball continues to hold the No. 4 spot in the Score Atlanta AAAAAA polls. Cross country, after a week off, ran in Canton, while competition cheer competed in the Bulldog Classic on Saturday.


Football returned to Maloof Stadium for the fist time since mid-August to close out the non-region portion of the schedule, facing 7A No. 5 Parkview. The Golden Lions (1-4) had three rushing touchdowns each from Kevin Beirne, Patrick Muir, and Liam Whitlark in the 38-21 loss to the Panthers. Luke Inskeep and Brendan Nerbonne each recorded a sack and Jack Tchienchou intercepted a pass to lead the defense. St. Pius X will travel to Grady Stadium to take on North Atlanta on September 30 to open up Region 4-AAAAAA play.


Volleyball split its four matches last week. St. Pius X (19-6, 4-0 Region 4-AAAAAA) knocked off North Atlanta and 6A No. 9 Dunwoody. Nina Shaw posted 13 kills, and Liv Diaz added 12 in the win over the Wildcats. Isa Boyd recorded 13 digs and 19 assists in the win, and JIllian Fry added 16 assists. The Golden Lions dropped 2-0 contests to 7A No. 2 Buford and 6A No. 1 Pope later in the week. The team travels to Marist to take on South Cobb and the War Eagles in region play, before hosting McIntosh on Thursday. St. Pius X will end the week on Saturday with the A5 Southeast Invitational in Roswell.


Cross country took to the course at the Warpath Invitational in Canton. The girls' placed second overall with Hannah Schemmel pacing the Golden Lions finishing second, with Zoe Garcia third and Jessica Sheehan sixth in the race. Lane Boyle placed 19th to put a fourth runner in the top 20. The boys were led by Dominic Noel and his 17th place finsh. Both teams will travel to Cartersville on Friday evening for the Wingfoot Classic.


Softball moved to 8-8 and 3-5 in region play, winning two of five games last week. After defeating Decatur, 4-2, in non-region play, the Golden Lions dropped a region tilt to Dunwoody, 7-3. The team took to the road in Chattanooga, losing to Calhoun and Gordon Lee before knocking off Cass, 4-3. Nina Parker leads the offensive attack, batting .500 with one home run, 11 runs batted in, and nine stolen bases. Maggie Maloney and Alex Petitt have also driven in 11 runs each for St. Pius X on the season. The Golden Lions host Riverwood on Tuesday and travel to South Cobb on Thursday, before returning to host Lovett and Blessed Trinity in the annual Pink Out games on Saturday.


Competition cheer improved four spots at the Bulldog Classic at North Gwinnett on Saturday. The ladies finished in third-place among 6A schools. After a couple of weeks off, the squad will travel to the Buc Bash on October 8.
