Dear St. Serra Parents,

One of my favorite times of the school day at St. Serra is lunch time. Not because of the anticipation of eating my lunch, but of having the opportunity to watch students ‘play’ during this time. According to The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) clinical report, The Power of Play: A Pediatric Role in Enhancing Development in Young Children, playing with both parents and peers is key to building thriving brains, bodies and social bonds―all important in today's world. Research shows play can improve children's abilities to plan, organize, get along with others, and regulate emotions. In addition, play helps with language, math and social skills, and even helps children cope with stress.

At St. Serra, our children are supervised by adults on campus to help ensure their safety and well-being. However, our children play on their own terms during recess and lunch time. They choose their own teams, they make up their own rules, they choose who they want to play with, they usually solve their own problems, and they take turns without the guidance of adults and parents doing everything for them. In today’s world, that doesn’t occur too often as there seems to be someone always telling them how to do something, when to do something and why they should do it. It is very refreshing to see our children act in this manner.

We will continue to monitor and watch our students to ensure their safety as always and we will also encourage them to express the enjoyment of ‘play’, using their imagination and creativity.

Always Striving,

Tim Tolzda
Sr. Principal
