Dear St. Serra Parents,

Data helps drive many of the decisions that we make in our goal of achieving Academic Excellence at St. Serra. As this highly unusual school year comes to a close, we are analyzing data to determine how well we addressed the Covid-related instructional challenges we faced. We know that widespread closures and/or the move to distance learning back in March of 2020, led to students finishing the school year slightly behind where we anticipated they would have been had the pandemic never happened. As a result, we came into this school year with the goal of closing that performance gap.

Renaissance Learning identified the median Student Growth Percentile (SGP) for students from fall to winter of the 2020-2021 school year. The approximately 3.8 million students in the sample represented all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Nearly 2.3 million students in grades 1-8 took the STAR Early Literacy or Reading tests, and nearly 1.5 million students took the STAR Math test.

Using the SGP scores reported by Renaissance and the St. Serra students’ SGP scores from the January administration of the STAR test, we were able to compare our students’ growth to that expected in a typical year, as well as to the growth of students across the nation and to the growth of students in Catholic and private schools across the nation. I am pleased to report that, in all of these comparisons, St. Serra Catholic School students fared very well.

The table below presents a summary of the overall findings. During a non-Covid school year, an SGP of 50 would indicate average growth, with scores ranging from a few points lower to a few points higher than 50 being typical.
St. Serra students’ growth scores from the January STAR test administration also looked good when reported by grade level and compared to national growth scores, too. Renaissance has not yet released national growth scores from the May administration of the STAR tests. However, the growth scores of St. Serra students are above average.
As the school year comes to a close, thank you for trusting us with your children's education. We wish you all a safe summer and see you next year!

Always Striving,

Tim Tolzda
Sr. Principal
