June 2022
A Message from The Rev. Lauren T. McLeavey
(Mother Lauren)
Dear Friends in Christ,

Now we are entering Summer and traditionally this is a season when the Church slows down (because of school vacations, etc). Well, this Summer, I urge you to continue in your faith journey and to expand your idea of mission in the world. Even if you are out of town for vacation, what can you continue to do in Christ’s name to further His mission in the world?

There is the idea that the Priests, Deacons, and Bishops are the only ministers of God’s work in the world. This idea does not come from thin air, it is an outdated idea from the past. Yet, if we look to the farther past back beyond that idea to ancient times, there is something different. In ancient times the church was filled with lay people doing Jesus’ work in the world. Over time, this idea was transferred to priest, deacons, and bishops, only doing God’s work. But this is detrimental to our faith. Every person, lay or ordained, has a mission to do in the world in God’s name.

Take this Summer (traditionally down time) to pray and ponder what your mission in the world in God’s name is. How can you work to make the world a better place for all people?

This is our mission from Jesus; Love God, love your neighbors as yourself. How do we live out this mission in our everyday lives?

Yours in Christ,
Mo. Lauren

From the Music Office
We congratulate the members of St Stephen's Choir for a great job this past Season despite dealing with the ups and downs of the Pandemic. Many members had to fight off the virus either in their family or themselves.  Despite it all, they managed to come together weekly to present a variety of anthems and solos at all the Services throughout the year. Both the professional section leaders and our very important volunteer members are a truly dedicated and talented group and we are blessed to have them.

News about our Pipe Organ:  The renowned organ firm of Foley-Baker and Sons have been working on our wonderful pipe organ.  There was much in the way of adjustments and repairs needed to the Organ Console (where the organ is played) and much in the way of cleaning and repairing of the reeds pipes (Trumpets, Oboe, Clarinet) as well as troubleshooting to repair dead notes caused by broken wires between the console and the relay system. Also, voicing and adjustments to the pipes themselves to make them sound even and not so loud.

Summer Hymn Requests:  For all of the congregants who want to hear and sing their favorite hymns, don't forget to fill out a Hymn Request form found by the entrance of the church. If you cannot do that, please email Mo. Lauren at [email protected].

In your request, please include:
  • Your Name
  • Your Contact Email/Phone
  • Hymn Name/Number
  • Date Requested
  • Other Notes

Even if it is not in our 1982 Hymnal and is appropriate, we will try to oblige your requests. Let's keep the Christmas songs for December please.

Choir Membership: During these summer months and hopefully as the virus concerns dwindle, we hope to see a return and/or increase in our choir membership. We have lots of music, but we need singers, so please give it some consideration. We would love to be able to have a Christmas and Spring Concert. Please give it some thought for the Fall season.
Congratulations Madison Shields!

Madison Shields has served as a Crucifer since the parish reopened to in-person worship. She will graduate from Schreiber High School at the end of this month. She plans to attend Villanova University this fall. As part of the college of arts and sciences, she looks forward to exploring all different kinds of classes. Before she goes off to college, this summer, she will be a sailing instructor at the Port Washington Yacht Club where she will teach 8-year-olds how to sail. Madison has appreciated being a part of the parish her entire life and will certainly visit when home from school.
1 Reception, 2 Confirmations & 3 First Holy Communions

  • Thank you to Matthew Blass for his generosity in catering the event.
  • Thank you to all who contributed “promises” or made monetary donations toward the auction and quilt raffle.
  • Thank you to all who attended, bought quilt chances, and bid on items.
  • And, lastly, congratulations to all the winners, especially Burr Henahan who took home the 2020 “Curvy Path” quilt!
Flags on Campus at Half Mast

The flags on the campus of St. Stephen’s are half mast in memory of all those killed senselessly by gun violence, especially in the wake of the most recent mass shootings in our nation. The flags will remain at half mast until sensible gun laws are enacted.
Summer Together 2022
Summer Together, that wonderful organization that sends local kids to local camps, has reached out for support again. Over the last few years St. Stephen’s has raised enough to be a leading donor to the cause, and to send more than a handful of kids to camp. This is a last-minute shout-out: I didn’t see the original sponsorship request in March!! PLEASE, if you feel moved to improve the lives of Port Washington kids this summer, email me at [email protected] to let me know as soon as possible, and then drop off or send a check with “Summer Together” in the memo line to the church office (or contribute via Vanco!) by Sunday, June 12th. I know I will be supporting them again.

Thank you all for your support in the past!

Celebrating Pride in Port Washington

The rainbow is a symbol that has had many meanings. At the end of the Noah story in Genesis, God places a rainbow in the sky as a promise not to destroy the earth again and as a symbol of God’s love of all people. June is Pride month, and the rainbow is used a symbol of love and inclusion as a celebration of, love, dignity, and equality. Let’s celebrate and live into the Episcopal Church’s motto: “All Are Welcome!”

Once again, St. Stephen’s has displayed lawn signs showing that our Parish is inclusive for all people and a safe place for our LGBTQIA+ neighbors. You can see them from Main Street and on Carlton Avenue.

If you would like to purchase rainbow PORT and LOVE IS LOVE yard signs to display at your own homes, Port-based organization, “Be The Rainbow” is selling them, which you can purchase at https://forms.gle/1bzGDYSg9DUqWrkh9

“Be The Rainbow’s 2nd Annual Pride Walk & Festival” is being held on Saturday, June 11th at 1pm. Some of the Youth Group and other parishioners are marching while carrying the St. Stephen’s Pride banner, shown below.

Bring your dancing shoes (or skates) and don't miss this chance to see your favorite skaters in a live performance!

Historian's Corner
Blessing of the Fleet
Just before the end of World War II, local sportsmen founded the Manhasset Bay Sportsmen’s Club (MBSC) to promote fishing in local waters. As part of their program, they instituted a Blessing of the Fleet, reminiscent of those held in fishing communities like Gloucester, Massachusetts. The first Blessing was held at the Town Dock on May 12, 1945, with Dr. Woon presiding. It was held again in 1946 but did not become an annual event until 1951. When the event started in 1945, one of the main reasons for holding the blessing was to remember those who had perished at sea, particularly the men and women who had lost their lives fighting in World War II. The event continues that tradition of remembrance with the casting of a wreath into the bay and the playing of “Taps.”

Boat owners rendezvous on Manhasset Bay, south of Plum Point, beginning at 11:30 a.m. They watch for an MBSC boat with the sign “Leader,” form a single line behind it and proceed when it does. Sailing craft must be under power while in the review.

Boaters must maintain a speed of four knots, keep an interval between boats consistent with safety rules and stay in line. After passing the reviewing stand, they shall proceed to the “Turn Marker Boat,” anchored north of the dock, turn to port around the marker boat and move out of the area on the reverse of the inward course, staying in line and maintaining four knots until well clear of the area.

All persons in the review are asked to observe proper etiquette. They should be properly dressed. While passing the clergy, all persons on board should stand at attention and uncover. Ensigns, except the American flag, should be dipped in salute.

The custom continues to the present day, with Fr. Stuart Huntley presiding over the Blessing in 2012 and Fr. Gary J. Parker and Fr. Kurt von Roeschlaub participating in 2015. In June 1983 our handbell ringers performed the Navy Hymn (“Eternal Father, Strong to Save”) at the Blessing.

This year’s ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 18th.

Sunday School & Youth Group
Last Day of Sunday School – June 19th: Sunday School & Youth Group wrap up the 2021-2022 school year next Sunday, June 19th. There will be an end of year celebration during Coffee Hour.

Fundraising for Additional figures for Our Outdoor Nativity Set: The Sunday School & Youth Group’s fundraising campaign to purchase the 3 Kings and additional figures to fill out the rest of our incredible Outdoor Crèche will be ongoing.  If you are interested in donating, please contact Rhonda.

Please DON'T FORGET about those "POP TABS"!: PLEASE SAVE THEM and help the Sunday School & Youth Group raise some money for "The Ronald McDonald House” in New Hyde Park, next to The Cohen's Children's Hospital. Through the collection of the little tabs you pull to open soda, soup or other aluminum cans, the funds generated from recycling these metal gems help offset the House's expenses.

There are baskets located at both entrances of the church for your food, pop tabs and other donations.  Rhonda is also happy to pick up your donations from your doorstep. Please call or text her at 516-325-3427 or email [email protected] to arrange a day and time for pickup.
ATTENTION TEACHERS!
Homework Help Tutoring Program

If you have a background in education, preferably middle school or higher, and are looking to give back to the community The United Methodist Church of Port Washington is looking for more tutors for their “Homework Help Tutoring Program”. Homework Help Tutoring Program is a weekly initiative that helps to alleviate the harm done by the Covid-19 pandemic, school closures, and the resulting loss of direct contact with educators. They meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:30 pm through the end of the school year in order to help students from the Port Washington Union Free School District, specifically Carrie Palmer Weber Middle School, to make progress. UMCPW is looking for more tutors, especially in the areas of math and science, as well as social studies and Italian. Tutors can either volunteer regularly or be on a list of substitutes.

If you are not comfortable tutoring but would like to be involved, you can help us greet and welcome the students and their families, or get involved in the hospitality aspect of the program. Donations for snacks and N-95 masks can be made through their website or by check.

They have 12 students so far and 7 tutors. Potential tutors can contact Pat at 516-883-1430 or [email protected] for info or to volunteer, or contact Pastor David Collins via email at [email protected]

Episcopal Ministries of LI – 2022 Annual Appeal

The Episcopal Ministries Annual Appeal is underway, from now until June 19th. Please watch their video appeal here: https://vimeo.com/718418855

With your support of Episcopal Ministries of Long Island (EMLI) in 2021, you and fellow parishioners transformed lives across our diocese:

  • A new, industrial sized community fridge distributed over 14,000 pounds of food in Brooklyn.
  • 40 children struggling in school benefited from the care of an after-school tutoring program in Queens.
  • A ministry supporting our immigrant neighbors disseminated over 6,000 educational flyers about the rights of undocumented workers across Nassau County.
  • Volunteers from across our diocese spent 5,500 hours stocking Blessing Boxes for those experiencing homelessness in Suffolk County.

In these past two years, you bore witness to isolation, loss, and injustice – but you walked with your neighbors as Christ walks with us. Investing in EMLI is an opportunity to walk with our neighbors – and see Christ in them – every day.

Your gift is a vital part of resourcing, nurturing, and amplifying ministries across the diocese. Will you make an investment in EMLI today and help us reach our goal of $100,000 by June 19th? Your partnership grows and strengthens this vital work bringing the love of Christ from the pew to the public square.

JUNETEENTH JUBILEE Ceremony & Reception
"Unchained Melodies"
Sunday, June 19th at 4pm Cathedral of the Incarnation, Garden City

The Episcopal Diocese of Long Island invites you to celebrate Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. The Very Rev. Canon Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas, Dean of The Episcopal Divinity School at Union Theological Seminary, will honor the life ministry of The Rt. Rev. Barbara C. Harris at the Juneteenth Jubilee. The Episcopal Diocese of Long Island recently launched The Barbara C. Harris Scholars Program for Truth and Reparations in the memory of The Rt. Rev. Barbara Clementine Harris, the first woman consecrated as a bishop in the Anglican Communion. The Scholars Program aims to promote equity in education by providing financial assistance to descendants of enslaved Africans in the United States. The inaugural class of scholars will be presented by The Rt. Rev. Lawrence Provenzano. The diocese will also present a gift of $10,000 to both Voorhees College and St. Augustine College, the two Historically Black Colleges and Universities founded by The Episcopal Church. Bishop Provenzano will lead a Prayer of Lament during the Juneteenth Jubilee, as the Church acknowledges its role in slavery in the United States. The Episcopal Diocese of Long Island will reaffirm its commitment to become a “transformed, anti-racist church.” As a Beloved Community of God, the Church is committed to Telling the Truth, Proclaiming the Dream, Practicing the Way of Love, and Repairing the Breach.
