During the Month of August there will be two special collections, the first on August 20, 2017 for Porto-Charities, Special Kids – Special Needs, and the second on August 27, 2017 for the Arlington Diocese Missions. The Cathedral will be giving our support this year to the Poor Sisters of St. Joseph Mission. Mother Maria Gonzalez will be at the Cathedral to present their mission here in the Diocese.
Porto Charities is a charitable organization dedicated to actively assisting us people with developmental or intellectual disabilities. It is their goal to raise and provide funds, resources, assistance, education, residences and overall improved quality of life for people with developmental or intellectual disabilities. Additionally, their objective is to promote education, awareness, friendship and social forums among members, their families and the community.
The Community of Poor Sisters of St. Joseph was founded in Alexandria (Virginia) in 1968. The good sisters established a child care center and opened their doors in September of 1970. St. Gabriel’s Day Care Center is named in gratitude after Archbishop Gabriel Maiorielo who was a providential protector to the sisters in the United States. He was father, mentor and guide to the Sisters, and provided everything they needed, whether it was material or spiritual. The Day Care Center located on Sano Street in Alexandria is fully accredited through the Commonwealth of Virginia and can operate within the County of Fairfax.
The charism of the Poor Sisters of Saint Joseph is Holy Evangelical Poverty: Conforming to the perfect example of Christ Filially obedient to the Father that is expressed in the practice of indiscriminant charity to all, with a particular devotion to caring for the poor, abandoned Children young people, the helpless aged and indigent sick. Their mission in the Church of God is to be proclaimers of the Good News of salvation.
Thank you for considering to support these worthwhile charities.
Rev. Robert J. Rippy
Ushers are part of the hospitality at the Cathedral. Our ushers faithfully perform their duties for our parishioners and guests during the weekend Masses, on Holy Days of Obligation, as well as at special and Diocesan Liturgies.
In addition to the more familiar tasks of taking up the collection baskets during Mass and distributing church bulletins after Mass. Our ushers carry out a number of important tasks to serve the parishioners of our parish. These include:
- Greeting the parishioners and visitors as they enter the church for Mass;
- Finding seating for congregants when the church is crowded;
- Helping the disabled and if requested, arranging to have Holy Communion brought to their pews;
- Ensuring that congregants are available for the Offertory Presentation of the Gifts; and
- Answering any questions that our parishioners or guests may have or directing them to the appropriate person if the usher does not know the answer.
If you are a caring, reliable, conscientious and dedicated person, the Usher Ministry will be very pleased to welcome you. Email Peter Bouffard email@example.com, he is always looking for new members.
Thank you to all the parishioners who donated shoes to House of Mercy Back to School Shoe Drive!
Allow yourself to be found, in particular by going to confession. In confession, we allow our Lord to find us, to remove the dirt, and to find that treasure, that "pearl of great price", and to have us to Himself more deeply.
“See to it That No one Misses the Grace of God” (Hebrews 12:15)
Do you have a desire to share Christ’s love? Do you feel called to connect with other women in our parish? Would you like to be a part of an authentic community of women who share Christ's love?
The Cathedral of St. Thomas More is discerning whether to bring Walking with Purpose, a women’s Catholic Bible study program to our parish, and we are seeking a group of women volunteers to lead the program.
Walking with Purpose features at-home study, weekly small group discussions and a monthly Connect Coffee event for a talk on a relevant topic. The program offers leaders an online training and mentoring program to help you shepherd other women and draw them closer to Christ.
If you are worried you do not have the skills to be a leader in this program, not a problem. Few things stretch and grow our faith like stepping out and asking God to work through us.
Say YES, and get ready to watch what He can do through imperfect women who depend on Him. Contact Iris at 571-334-9340 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Don't forget to turn in your Mass sheets over the summer.Please drop them off at the Rectory. Also, don't forget to sign up for Youth Events to get your participation hours for Confirmation.
