Reach Out

For the past number of years, during the month of December, our parish has hosted up to 25 homeless men during the night in our social hall.  The program, called Reach Out, is administered by Catholic Community Services (CCS).  Since the outbreak of Covid-19, Catholic Community Services has been hosting the homeless in an area motel to provide greater safety. The program has proved incredibly successful.  Fifteen people have been moved into permanent housing. Five additional folks have found fulltime employment. Nine individuals are preparing to move into the new Thea Bowman Apartments in Kent when they open in December.

Sheltering at the motel will cease December 30th.  Bill Hallerman, directory of CCS stated: “We are patiently waiting, enthusiastically advocating and constantly praying for a more permanent solution and enhanced shelter options for the individuals we serve.”      He goes on to say: “There is some hope in that area, as King County approved a sales tax last month which contained capital and operating dollars for emergency housing. We are advocating that these dollars must go to support our homeless neighbors in South King County, and that they should go to pat for a 24/7 facility beginning in the new year.”

Just as our parish was instrumental in establishing the Federal Way Day Center for our homeless neighbors, I hope the parish will be able to support and work for a 24/7 shelter here in South King County. The track record shows that when those experiencing homelessness have a safe and caring place to stay, they are empowered to find solutions to their situation.  Pope France reminds us that if we touch Christ in the Eucharist, we also are called to touch him in the suffering of the poor.

A note from your Parish Administrator
A very Blessed Thanksgiving to all our generous parishioners who keep our parish and school going through their financial support, through volunteering and through their prayers. The parish staff is so thankful for each and every one of you.
Next weekend Catholic Community Services and Catholic Housing Services kick off the Appeal for the Poor Campaign. CCS/CHS serve over 105,000 people in Western Washington through 170 programs. Through a donation to CCS/CHS, we can help with finding stable housing , a nutritious meal or compassionate home care for those men, women and children seeking essential services. For those who have never given, an anonymous donor has given $10,000 to incentivize new parish donors. The first 100 new households who give at least $100 will have their gift matched. In addition, 25% of all gifts from our parishioners will be returned to the parish to facilitate our own charitable giving initiatives. Envelopes can be found in your monthly packet and we will have them available at Mass.

Stewardship Pledge Drive
We’ve sent out a follow up letter to all those who haven’t yet pledged in our annual stewardship drive. We have received several more pledges since the letters were mailed out, so if you have pledged in the last 10 days, please disregard our follow up letter. Thank you for pledging your support for St. Vincent parish in the coming year.
We are entering a season of holiday gatherings. I urge you to refrain from hosting or attending events and parties with individuals from outside of your household. We know that these types of family and friend gatherings are particularly unsafe and are a significant source of COVID infections.  If you do choose to gather with extended family or friends, please wear a face mask even in your own home and keep six feet of distance between members of different households.   If you are a liturgical minister at Mass and gather at home with individuals from outside your household, please wait 14 days before serving at Mass.

Thank you for helping us keep all our parishioners safe, and a special "Thank You" to all our COVID-19 volunteers who help us keep the parish operating during this challenging time.
