The Good Shepherd

One day I heard my eldest son sharing during a high school retreat he was attending.  He spoke about a time when his little sister went missing during one of his little league games years ago.  She was 6 years old and and he was 10 when she had wandered off during all the commotion of the day.  Once we discovered she was missing, we began searching for her.  He did not know at the time, but panic began setting in my heart as we scoured the park with no luck.  She was gone.  After what seemed like an eternity she popped up from a nearby canyon where she had been playing with another friend.

My son continued describing how he saw me cry as I sprinted to scoop her into my arms.  Witnessing my love and emotions for my daughter he realized for the first just how much I actually loved all of them.  It often takes an intimate encounter before we know how loved we are.  Providing shelter, food, and schooling were forms of my love for the kids.  Playing catch in the yard and swimming at the beach was another form of my love.  Tucking them in and praying at night before bed was still more examples of my love.  But it wasn’t until he experienced his father's love, in my tears and hugs, did he know how real it was for him.

Jesus is the good shepherd who lays down his life for us.  Sure, He is around us all day long as we go about our activities.  He’s there when we wake with a sunrise and again at night tucking us in with a cool breeze.  He delights in our joys and is in the midst of our family.  He blesses us with friends and showers us with many good gifts.  However, it is only when we encounter his love poured out on the cross do we know how real it is for us.

You are Loved.
