eBulletin
Beloved,
Were you there? This picture was taken at First Communion in May 2018. Notice the wig I am wearing. Do you remember what I called myself as I wore that wig? That’s correct! Big Hair Harriet! I know a lot of you liked this visual aid because you told me so. The whole point with Big Hair Harriet that we can be so quick to judge people by their looks, by how they appear to us externally. But that is not with the Christian does, right? Why? Because that is not what Jesus does. He looks into the heart, looks into the soul.
It’s all about the soul! “All flows from the soul!” I’ve been in some very beautiful churches where the congregation has seemed as cold as ice. In these cases, the whole point has been missed. (See the Pharisees with their hardened hearts and cold souls.) Now don’t get me wrong. I know the physical beauty of the church can be a portal into the beauty of Christ and it is good and right to take care of that beauty but if we forget what Jesus is really after is the beauty of the soul then we are in trouble. The “soul” of the church is Jesus living in the hearts of believers.
As we think about the image of Big Hair Harriet, let us reflect on a few questions:
Are you more concerned about your external appearance than the beauty of your soul?
Is your utmost concern that church about the souls that are sitting around you at that mass, those in your home, those you meet that day, and those who you pray for?
Is Jesus more concerned about the beauty of the church or the beauty of the souls in the church?
“All flows from the soul.”

+Fr John

You are loved!
