Saints of the Day:

Saint Ambrose was born in Gaul in 340, and was a member of the Roman Senate. After the death of Auxentius, the Arian Bishop of Milan, a violent dispute arose among the Orthodox and Arians about who would succeed him. Ambrose, desiring as Governor of the province to restore the peace, attempted to mediate between them. As he spoke to the people, eloquently persuading them to elect a new bishop without tumult and disorder, a young child, inspired from on high, suddenly cried out "Ambrose, bishop!" To his astonishment and dismay, the people immediately took up this cry themselves, and over his many protests, he was raised to the episcopal throne of Milan on December 7, 374. A great Father of the Church, he wrote many works in Latin, and was both an unwearying opponent of Arianism, and a fearless accuser of emperors when they transgressed the law of God. Having lived fifty-seven years, he reposed on April 4, on the eve of Pascha, in the year 397.

The most-venerable and shining new luminary of hymnography, the divinely-inspired hymn writer of the sacred accomplishments of the Saints, a city-founder in the desert of Athos, an inhabitant of the Skete of Little Saint Anna who dwelled together with virtue and divine wisdom, our bright father Gerasimos, who put into practice the shining ray of his theology, and in the end his soul was completely pure. In the world he was known as Anastasios-Athanasios Graikas and born in Droviani in the province of Delvino of Northern Epirus on the 5th of September in the year of salvation 1905. His most pious mother instilled deeply in his heart the teachings of the faith and an ecclesiastical consciousness. He received a comprehensive education in Droviani and Athens with the finest diligence. A monk-lover by nature, he was nourished at a young age by divine eros, and knowing the futility of the temporal he fled to Athos, where he  click here to continue

+PROSPHORO+

Bread has been the emblem of God’s providence for us, throughout humanity’s history. Both physical (bread as food) and spiritual - the επιούσιον (epiousion) or “supersubstantial” bread of the Lord’s prayer, the bread of Holy Communion.

In the Orthodox Christian church, the pinnacle of our worship is union with Christ, both spiritually but also physically, by consuming the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Since the Last Supper, before every Divine Liturgy, one or more of the faithful prepare and bring bread to church to be used as the Body of Christ in the Eucharist. The Orthodox church is liturgical. For those of us who bake prosphoro, the liturgy begins as we prepare to bake!

Prosphoro is an offering to God, made from His material gifts to us, and prepared lovingly and prayerfully.

A special website is available to share with the faithful this ‘proper’ method of preparation of the holy gift according to the Greek Orthodox tradition. Please click here to learn how to bake this beautiful offering.
