Saint of the Day:

Saint Nektarios was born in Selyvria of Thrace on October 1, 1846. After putting himself through school in Constantinople with much hard labor, he became a monk on Chios in 1876, receiving the monastic name of Lazarus; because of his virtue, a year later he was ordained deacon, receiving the new name of Nektarios. Under the patronage of Patriarch Sophronius of Alexandria, Nektarius went to Athens to study in 1882; completing his theological studies in 1885, he went to Alexandria, where Patriarch Sophronius ordained him priest on March 23, 1886 in the Cathedral of Saint Sabbas, and in August of the same year, in the Church of Saint Nicholas in Cairo, made him Archimandrite. Archimandrite Nektarius showed much zeal both for preaching the word of God, and for the beauty of God's house. He greatly beautified the Church of Saint Nicholas in Cairo, and years later, when Nektarius was in Athens, Saint Nicholas appeared to him in a dream, embracing him and telling him he was going to exalt him very high. TO ALL VETERANS

Veterans Day is a public holiday that is dedicated to honoring anyone who has served in the United States military.

As a Church, we want to be sure to express our appreciation to all the Veterans of our parish.  Without you, and many others like you who have sacrificed, there is a distinct possibility we would not have the freedom we have to worship.

The price of freedom is very high.  Many have paid the ultimate price on behalf of their nation, yet we realize there is also the price of saying “good-bye” to a spouse, fiancé, or even looking into the big, round eyes of a child as the plane or ship is about to board with dads and moms heading off to serve.  Rest assured…you are appreciated!!!

On behalf of a grateful Parish Family, we want to say, “Thank You”.

Youth Sermon Nov. 2

Many this past week dressed up and pretended to be someone or something while asking for candy and goodies. But did you know that a person actually puts on Christ at the time of Baptism?

Main Sermon Nov. 2

In the Gospel Passage today we hear about the poor man Lazarus and the Rich man. Both died and went to very different areas. Lazarus was in the bosom of Abraham in Heaven and the rich man was in torment. And between them there was a great chasm.

Did you know that there was a chasm between Lazarus and the rich man before they died?

Are you a chasm or a bridge?

+PROSPHORO+

Bread has been the emblem of God’s providence for us, throughout humanity’s history. Both physical (bread as food) and spiritual - the επιούσιον (epiousion) or “supersubstantial” bread of the Lord’s prayer, the bread of Holy Communion.

In the Orthodox Christian church, the pinnacle of our worship is union with Christ, both spiritually but also physically, by consuming the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Since the Last Supper, before every Divine Liturgy, one or more of the faithful prepare and bring bread to church to be used as the Body of Christ in the Eucharist. The Orthodox church is liturgical. For those of us who bake prosphoro, the liturgy begins as we prepare to bake!

Prosphoro is an offering to God, made from His material gifts to us, and prepared lovingly and prayerfully.

A special website is available to share with the faithful this ‘proper’ method of preparation of the holy gift according to the Greek Orthodox tradition. Please click here to learn how to bake this beautiful offering.
