´╗┐Children's Faith Formation News
including Youth Confirmation
The word "creche" is the French word for manger, which comes from the Italian word "greccio," the namesake of the town visited by St Francis, whom tradition says created the first nativity scene.
Visit the Cathedral creche until Monday, 1/11
Classes resume this Sunday
All Children's Faith Formation classes, including Youth Confirmation, will continue on an every other week schedule during the Winter of 2021. You can find the Winter calendar at the end of this newsletter. In the meantime, watch for the Zoom links in your inbox on Sunday morning. I look forward to seeing you again!
Scripture in Paint
This painting, found in the Cathedral's Reconciliation Chapel, illustrates this Sunday's Gospel reading. You may notice that the people and the land don't appear to be of Middle Eastern origin. They aren't. Eustace P. Ziegler set the Baptism of the Lord on the shores of Lake Washington and gave the participants features of Alaska Natives.
Scripture in Wood
This is the Ambo, from which the Scriptures are read, the homily given and the prayers of the faithful prayed. Randall Rosenthal carved it out of one piece of mahogany. It depicts the rain and clouds so familiar to us here in the Northwest, as well as the leaves of seven different native trees. But why? It's all a reference to this Sunday's first reading. Just as the rain makes for a lush landscape, so does the Word of God bring forth much fruit in us.
Can you make out which trees are represented? Please let me know as I haven't been able to figure them out. Thanks!
Scripture in Glass
This Sunday, we hear the first of many readings during 2021 from the Gospel of Mark. In the North Aisle of the West Nave is a stained glass window of St Mark. Even if his name weren't printed on a banner, you would know it was him by the lion above his head, the scroll representing the Gospel in his left hand and the bishop's crozier in his right hand. The shortest of the four Gospels, it can be read in about 2-hours. See page 1237 in your green Bible, or page 1523 in the Catholic Children's Bible. Prefer pixels to paper? Read the Gospel here.

Special Note for Year 2
In normal years, we would have had a parent-child retreat in November that focused on Baptism. Because of the pandemic, and because of the late start to the CFF year, we did not. However, I strongly encourage you to have a mini-retreat in your home. The materials below can be adapted for people of all abilities and circumstances. In addition, there is a lovely activity provided that gives you a way to support the two older children who will be baptized at the Easter Vigil this year. Do take a look!
