Madison crews recently completed work on the pedestrian underpass, which opened to the public in late September. Our scope included installing a structural shotcrete substrate wall as well as glass fiber-reinforced concrete (GFRC) lettering and graphics that stand out in relief along the wall. The Madison crew also applied shotcrete infill between the GFRC graphics, which resulted in a clean yet textured aesthetic (see images). The underpass design blends with St Joe’s historic stone buildings while the tunnel walls boldly showcase the campus name along with the university’s shield and founding year.
Named in honor of John R. Post, Class of 1960, the newly opened thoroughfare is a key component of a master plan to transform the campus and improve connectivity between campus landmarks. The intersection is a frequent crossing spot for students, faculty, staff and residents of the West Philadelphia and Lower Merion Township communities who frequent the picturesque campus for recreation. It is common to see people jogging, pushing strollers and walking dogs across the campus—which previously meant having to navigate the busy vehicle traffic of City Avenue. The university expects more than 1,500 students, faculty, staff and community members to use Post Crossing every day.
Madison’s skilled shotcrete crew was excited and proud to bring the designer’s artistic vision to life. We stand ready to assist in your next project.
Sincerely,
