THIS WEEK AT ST JOHN'S

Dear Friends,

These days, our St John’s events seem to converge in clusters. We have just come through such a cluster – All Souls Movie Night, St John’s Demystified, Sermon Exchange with Temple Israel, and Remembrance Sunday. These events included a number of “firsts” and we really brought people together. Thanks to everyone who participated!

Heads up about our next convergence of a cluster of events – it’s a couple weeks before it happens so you have time to think about them and them to your calendar.

COVID Safety Update from the Diocese of Ottawa:

“Winter is on the horizon, people are indoors more, and COVID infections are on the rise. Throughout the pandemic, our response to the reality of the virus has been science-based and in line with public health, and this latest challenge must be met the same way. Effective this Sunday, October 30th, all liturgical leaders — including clergy, choirs, servers, chalice bearers, readers, intercessors, and sidespeople/greeters — must wear a mask before, during and after services except when speaking into a microphone, eating or drinking.”

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

WHAT'S HAPPENING

SPECIAL CHOIR ANTHEM

The anthem this coming Sunday is a special composition commissioned in honour of Beth Atkinson, the mother of Cara Gilbertson.

The piece is entitled I Was Glad, based on Psalm 122, and is composed by a former choir member, Madox Terrell.

The piece was originally commissioned in the winter of 2020 and scheduled for performance that spring, but due to

the pandemic, its first performance was delayed until this coming

Sunday. What a great way to honour a beloved friend and mother.

ST JOHN'S DEMYSTIFIED

Did you ever wonder why people come to St. John's? What they believe? Why they worship the way they do? Why they always seem so busy with outreach programs, community engagement, social justice activities, and a million other things? You are not alone!

The Lifelong Learning Committee is planning a series of conversations to help all parishioners, new and old, to deepen their understanding and appreciation of who we are and what we do at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church. Over 4 sessions there will be time to engage in thoughtful dialogue on topics like these:

  1. Where does Christianity fit among religions of the world, and where does Anglicanism fit among Christian traditions, and where does St John’s fit in the Anglican tradition?
  2. Why do we worship the way we do?
  3. How do we live out our faith in practice?
  4. How do we engage with the world?

The above topics will be explored through four 2-hour Saturday morning sessions to be held (in person) on Nov. 12th and 19th (10 AM-12PM). This is intended for everyone – you might be new to these questions or maybe you have been thinking about them for a long time. Join us for a chance to learn from each other and to share your views and insights.

TAKE NOTE

The Shop is in need of men’s winter coats/jackets and glove or mitts for men and women. Donations of these items would be welcome and help those in need in the community to keep warm this winter.

A note from John Holgate

Some of you might know that I have been studying in the Master of Divinity program at St. Paul University for the last 3 years. I have also been following a path of discernment around ordination as a clergyperson within the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa.

The Bishop of Ottawa has decided to ordain me, God willing, to be a deacon on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 11 AM at Christ Church Cathedral Ottawa, on Sparks St., near Bronson Ave.

Everyone is welcome to attend this service, which will also have the ordination of four deacons to be priests.

I'm looking forward to this step with both excitement and fear. It has been a long road to travel, yet there is always some question about the destination. But it feels like it would be worse if there were no questions. John Holgate
