THIS WEEK AT ST JOHN'S

Dear Friends,

Colder nights, the beginning of vibrant colours, and with them, the return of the fall season of community in our church. We mark the changing cycles of the earth with the return of aspects of church life – choir, children’s ministry, and coming home from summer travels.

Let’s call our St John’s observance a Season of Creation. It’s followed by an overlapping Season of Remembrance – a time of joy, sadness, and faith in God’s infinite love.

SEASON OF CREATION

Harvest Thanksgiving – Sunday October 9. Let’s decorate. Let’s be mindful. Try it have a prayer inventory of all that you have received, as a mental list at the end of each day and a reason to get out of bed in the morning. God is blessing us with life!

Food Basket. I want to draw your attention to the food basket that is brought forward each week at the beginning of the eucharistic prayer. Try to remember to put something in it! It’s for the Centretown Emergency Food Centre. The food we give provides a three to four day emergency food hamper to Centretown residents living within the boundaries once per month.

Walkathon to support Centretown Emergency Food Centre, Sunday, October 2. There’s a good write up about it in the Centretown Buzz. We have a St John’s group walking on Sunday after the 10:15 service – I’m walking – wear your comfortable shoes and walk with us. You can also donate financially here. And if I may be so bold, sponsor two of our walkers: Emmy Verdun and Me!

Messy Church Bake-Off! Saturday, October 15, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. We will be making chocolate chip cookies, banana bread and brownies! And learning about Thanksgiving. All children welcome (accompanied by parent or guardian). We will be baking in the church basement kitchen (The Well).

SEASON OF REMEMBRANCE

All Saints Sunday – October 30. We will move our 10:15 service to 4:15 p.m. to repeat the spring experiment of testing an afternoon service time. We are still in one-time experiment mode, but we liked our first one this spring, especially with the option of dinner following at one of the many restaurants on Elgin Street.

All Souls Movie Event – Wednesday, November

Conversations about death and faith in the life to come and remembering our loved ones. Mexican themed potluck at the church. – 5:30 p.m. arrival; movie starts at 6.30 p.m.

Remembrance Sunday – November 6. The 10:15 sermon will be given by Rabbi Daniel Mikelburg of Temple Israel.

Funeral for Dora Broughton – Saturday October 1. Service at 2 p.m. in the church with Reception following. Visitation on September 30th, 6-9 pm at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O'Connor).

Funeral for Bruce Marshall – Saturday October 29. Service at 2 p.m. in the church with reception following. Visitation in the church, Saturday 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Lots happening and your invited! And see you Sunday, 8:00 and 10:15 a.m.

Zoom National Prayer Gathering for World Food Day

The Canadian Foodgrains Bank is hosting an ecumenical prayer service on Zoom. Says the Foodgrains Bank: “This is a time for Canadian Christians to gather and pray for an end to hunger. A time for us to know that God cares about every single person who lives with hunger and for us all to be encouraged in the actions we can take to make a difference.” This special prayer event will include breakout rooms so that participants can meet other people interested in ending hunger and pray together as we stand in unity before God. Download the World Food Day worship resource.

The Canadian Foodgrains Bank will be back in person this year in addition to holding workshops(here at St John's) where Canadians come together from across the country to learn about food security issues they will have a Hill Day where they will have meetings with MPs and their supporters will have a chance to advocate for supports towards their goal to end global hunger.

Let's show our support to their wonderful cause and join in the National Prayer Gathering for World Food Day.

ST JOHN'S DEMYSTIFIED

Did you ever wonder why people come to St. John's? What they believe? Why they worship the way they do? Why they always seem so busy with outreach programs, community engagement, social justice activities, and a million other things? You are not alone!

The Lifelong Learning Committee is planning a series of conversations to help all parishioners, new and old, to deepen their understanding and appreciation of who we are and what we do at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church. Over 4 sessions there will be time to engage in thoughtful dialogue on topics like these:

  1. Where does Christianity fit among religions of the world, and where does Anglicanism fit among Christian traditions, and where does St John’s fit in the Anglican tradition?
  2. Why do we worship the way we do?
  3. How do we live out our faith in practice?
  4. How do we engage with the world?

The above topics will be explored through four 2-hour Saturday morning sessions to be held (in person) on Oct. 29th, and Nov. 5th, 12th and 19th (10 AM-12PM). This is intended for everyone – you might be new to these questions or maybe you have been thinking about them for a long time. Join us for a chance to learn from each other and to share your views and insights.
