THIS WEEK AT ST JOHN'S
Dear Friends,

It’s great to be back at St John’s after I time of vacation. It was a time of rest and also a time of adventure so I have stories to share. It’s still mid-summer so you may be having your own version of rest and adventure; if you are, thank you for reading from afar, and I look forward to hearing your stories!

We have plans for a busy fall which includes discussion and decisions that are very important for our community at St John’s. We will do our best to keep you up to date, notably, save the date of Sunday, September 11 for a Special Vestry Meeting at which we will present a proposal for the redevelopment plan for the church property. If you have not yet seen the introduction to our plans, presented recently by our churchwardens, please read it HERE.

Coming soon, please consider the following gatherings and join us if you can:

  • Pride Service. St John’s welcoming the community for Sunday worship on Sunday, August 28 at 10:15 a.m. We are advertising in the Pride Guide and you are welcome to join in for the parade following the service. The service features special music and also a special focus: “Let’s Talk about Trans” You may be aware that young people in record numbers are identifying as transgender – let’s learn about this together.

  • Books & BBQ. We are planning the second gathering for a reading of On Consolation – Finding Solace in Dark Times by Michael Ignatieff. Our first session at the beginning of the summer was about initial impressions as we began to read. If you missed the first gathering, you’re more than welcome to opt in as we discuss our concluding impressions about the book. Special thanks to Ian Myles and Michelle Smulders for hosting our first gathering and to Peggy Lister who will welcome us for the second session on Wednesday, September 7, 6:00 p.m. Location details to follow.

  • Children’s Splash Pad Party. This event for children of our community was to take place in August; it’s postponed to September to work around summer travel plans.

We are in a season of life passages and we give thanks to God for the lives of those recently departed:

Marie Fountain (1921-2022)
Marie’s funeral was held this week Wednesday.

Pat Love (1927-2022)
Pat’s funeral will be held at St John’s on Saturday, September 10, 1 p.m.

Dora Broughton (1937-2022)
Dora’s funeral will be held at St John’s on Saturday, October 1, 2 p.m.

It’s a wonderful blessing to support each other and to come together as the St John’s
community. I hope you will join us for worship this coming Sunday, 8 a.m. and 10:15 a.m.

St. John's Demystified!

Did you ever wonder why people come to St. John's? What they believe? Why they worship the way they do? Why they always seem so busy with outreach programs, community engagement, social justice activities, and a million other things? You are not alone!

The Lifelong Learning Committee is planning a series of conversations to help all parishioners, new and old, to deepen their understanding and appreciation of who we are and what we do at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church. Over 4 sessions there will be time to engage in thoughtful dialogue on topics like these:

  1. Where does Christianity fit among religions of the world, and where does Anglicanism fit among Christian traditions, and where does St John’s fit in the Anglican tradition?
  2. Why do we worship the way we do?
  3. How do we live out our faith in practice?
  4. How do we engage with the world?

The above topics will be explored through four 2-hour Saturday morning sessions to be held (in person) on Oct. 15 and 29th, and Nov. 12th and 19th (10 AM-12PM). This is intended for everyone – you might be new to these questions or maybe you have been thinking about them for a long time. Join us for a chance to learn from each other and to share your views and insights.

PWRDF responds to ACT
Alliance appeal for Ukraine
PWRDF is supporting Ukrainians forced to flee their homes due to the Russian invasion. A grant of $20,000 has been issued to an ACT alliance appeal funding the work of ACT member, the Hungarian Interchurch AID (HIA). HIA has been working in Ukraine for more than 25 years in humanitarian and development projects. It had already shipped 28 tons of food to support those fleeing to Hungary, and their staff have been working with refugees at the Ukraine/Hungary border.
To make a donation go to pwrdf.org/give-today and click on Response in Ukraine. You may also donate by phone at 416-822-9083 or leave a voicemail toll-free at 1-866-308-7973 and PWRDF will return your call. You can mail your cheque to PWRDF, 80 Hayden, 3rd floor, Toronto, Ontario, M4Y 3G2 or give through St. John’s. Please mark Ukraine in the memo field.
