Come to Sunday of course – I hope to see you this coming Sunday 8:00 and 10:15. But please also consider these smaller gatherings which you will see in this newsletter. A walk in the Beechwood Cemetery, an excursion to the powwow at Kitigan Zibi, Books and Barbecue.
We may actually have to remind ourselves that we are out of practice. The past 2½ years of pandemic precautions have trained us to stay apart. That was about safety but it is now safe to be together.
As you may know, we were making worship videos during the lockdown. Some churches have moved to dual services – live as well as livestream – and we may well get there if the pandemic guidelines become stricter again. But in the meantime, we are turning our video energy towards meeting and knowing our neighbours. We are reaching out and saying “We are part of each other.” This week is the first in a new series of videos called Community Connections. Meet Sahada Alolo of Multifaith Housing Initiative …and just in time for their annual Tulipathon walk to support rent subsidies for affordable housing. This walkathon is another opportunity to be together. We are part of each other!

Doors open Ottawa is back! And St John's is once again participating in the event.
|

St John's is participating again in Doors Open Ottawa, a free annual architectural event celebrating our community’s heritage of historical, culture and religious buildings. |
|
The All My Relations Circle of the Diocese of Ottawa would like to invite St. John the Evangelist to the KITIGAN ZIBI Pow Wow on Saturday June 4th starting at 12 noon with the Grand Entry. This is a wonderful opportunity to further our knowledge of Algonquin culture and traditions. A Pow Wow is a time of celebration, healing and spiritual growth. It is a gathering where people come together to dance, sing, seek healing, meet old friends and make new ones. The Pow Wow is a time to reaffirm the joy of life and reconnect with Mother Earth. Pow Wows welcome non-Indigenous (settlers), Métis and Inuit peoples alike.
We are looking for participants and drivers up to Maniwaki, about 1 ½ hours north of Ottawa on Hwy 5. We would leave around 10:30 a.m. from St. John’s. Return time to be determined by participants. Bring a light chair, hat, sunscreen and water. We will likely find food and many vendors at the event.

Book Study on the Acts of the Apostles |

Are we still in the time of the Early Church? We start from this idea as we delve into 3 stories over the month of May. Read all of Acts – but it’s long! If you don’t have time for all 28 chapters, read Chapter 8 for the first session. And watch the new video: 20 minutes of background and questions to focus our time together. |

History Walk through Beechwood Cemetery |

Saturday June 18, 10:30 in front of the reception centre at Beechwood.
Join fellow parishioners for this interesting walking tour, guided by a Beechwood staff member. There will be the option to continue afterwards to an informal patio lunch, location to be announced. Please contact the office to register and also if you need a drive to and from Beechwood.

There will be 2 'Books and Barbeque' events over the summer. The book is On Consolation: Finding Solace in Dark Times by Michael Ignatieff (available at Perfect Books on Elgin Street, at the Ottawa Public Library, both print and audio, and in Kindle format).
At the first session in July, the book will be introduced and the first few chapters discussed. At the second session in August, discussion will focus on the book as a whole.
For now... mark your calendars!
The first gathering will be on Wednesday July 6 at 6 pm at the home of Michelle Smulders and Ian Myles.
Register through the office for directions and for what food contributions would be welcome.

Your donation will support rent subsidies for MHI tenants. If you would like to see more about present and past Tulipathons visit Tulipathon.
Tulipathon 2022 will take place in person at Dow's Lake on the last Sunday in May (May 29).
Opening ceremonies celebrating MHI's 20th Anniversary will begin at 2:45.
The two-kilometre walk will begin at 3 p.m.

Alliance appeal for Ukraine
|
|
PWRDF is supporting Ukrainians forced to flee their homes due to the Russian invasion. A grant of $20,000 has been issued to an ACT alliance appeal funding the work of ACT member, the Hungarian Interchurch AID (HIA). HIA has been working in Ukraine for more than 25 years in humanitarian and development projects. It had already shipped 28 tons of food to support those fleeing to Hungary, and their staff have been working with refugees at the Ukraine/Hungary border.
