THIS WEEK AT ST JOHN'S
Dear Friends

Welcome to our experiment weekend!

Here’s the experiment: Come to the 8:00 Eucharist – if you can get past the streets closed for Ottawa Race Weekend. But if you are able to join us, stick around as we ring the bells and cheer on the runners from the front steps.

A new service time experiment: We are moving the 10:15 service to 4:15(for this Sunday only!!) – there should be no difficulty getting downtown. Some extras: This service includes a musical extravaganza. This service includes a full Children’s Story right after Communion. Stick around for supper on a patio with your St John’s friends.

And some extra updates – see below for details:
-       Please join us for Bill Baxter’s funeral service today at 3 p.m.
-       Check out our St John’s submission for the Joy of Faith interfaith service on June 5
-       Sign up to represent St John’s at the Pow Wow at Kitigan Zibi on Saturday June 4

And a last BIG piece of news: Starting Monday June 1, masking in church is optional for all participants! We will continue to respect and support anyone who prefers to wear a mask or to sit with physical distance. But the safety discipline moves into the green zone.

PS - Please note that we will be video recording portions of the 4:15 service.

As always, welcome to St John’s,

Gary+

WHAT'S HAPPENING
Doors open Ottawa is back! And St John's is once again participating in the event.
St John's is participating again in Doors Open Ottawa, a free annual architectural event celebrating our community’s heritage of historical, culture and religious buildings.
If you are available to volunteer for a couple of hours on June 4th please contact Monica Patten.
POW WOW INVITATION
The All My Relations Circle of the Diocese of Ottawa would like to invite St. John the Evangelist to the KITIGAN ZIBI Pow Wow on Saturday June 4th starting at 12 noon with the Grand Entry. This is a wonderful opportunity to further our knowledge of Algonquin culture and traditions.  A Pow Wow is a time of celebration, healing and spiritual growth. It is a gathering where people come together to dance, sing, seek healing, meet old friends and make new ones. The Pow Wow is a time to reaffirm the joy of life and reconnect with Mother Earth.  Pow Wows welcome non-Indigenous (settlers), Métis and Inuit peoples alike.

We are looking for participants and drivers up to Maniwaki, about 1 ½ hours north of Ottawa on Hwy 5. We would leave around 10:30 a.m. from St. John’s. Return time to be determined by participants. Bring a light chair, hat, sunscreen and water. We will likely find food and many vendors at the event.

To register please clink the link below and if you have any questions please direct them to Jane Maxwell.
More information about the KZ Pow Wow can be found at:

Lifelong Learning
Book Study on the Acts of the Apostles
Are we still in the time of the Early Church? We start from this idea as we delve into 3 stories over the month of May. Read all of Acts – but it’s long! If you don’t have time for all 28 chapters, read Chapter 8 for the first session. And watch the new video: 20 minutes of background and questions to focus our time together.
Third Session Tuesday May 31st, 7:30 p.m.
St John’s submission to the annual interfaith celebration The Joy of Faith
Hymn 606 offers us an opportunity the put into words an inclusive and welcoming attitude towards other faiths. There is a “wideness” to who God is and who God loves. The love of God is “broader” than we can think or understand. It’s all in the song!
History Walk through Beechwood Cemetery
Saturday June 18, 10:30 in front of the reception centre at Beechwood.
Join fellow parishioners for this interesting walking tour, guided by a Beechwood staff member. There will be the option to continue afterwards to an informal patio lunch, location to be announced. Please contact the office to register and also if you need a drive to and from Beechwood.
Books and Barbeque
There will be 2 'Books and Barbeque' events over the summer. The book is On Consolation: Finding Solace in Dark Times by Michael Ignatieff (available at Perfect Books on Elgin Street, at the Ottawa Public Library, both print and audio, and in Kindle format).
At the first session in July, the book will be introduced and the first few chapters discussed. At the second session in August, discussion will focus on the book as a whole.
For now... mark your calendars!
The first gathering will be on Wednesday July 6 at 6 pm at the home of Michelle Smulders and Ian Myles.
Register through the office for directions and for what food contributions would be welcome.
Come to enjoy a burger and a lively discussion!
TAKE NOTE
Food basket for the Centretown Emergency Food Centre

Please remember to bring an offering for the Centretown Emergency Food Centre.
St. John's is one of 23 downtown churches supporting this ministry, and our food and money contributions are essential, since the city is no longer funding it(The Centre no longer meets their funding parameters - there's no problem with its administration). Anything is welcome, but obviously not out of date cans or dried goods.
Money is better than a gift card, because the Centre deals with suppliers who sell them food at cost.
These days, and particularly in the summer, many people need this help.
Please give regularly and generously.
Our neighbour and partner in community ministries The Well is in need of bath towels and socks. Donations can be dropped off at The Well.
On behalf of the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa's Refugee Ministry, we announce that our Thousand Doves are taking flight in Christ Church Cathedral at the Feast of Pentecost on Sunday, June 5.

This unique installation of paper origami doves – created by a dedicated team of dove-makers across the Diocese – symbolizes a renewed commitment refugee sponsorship, celebrates the contribution of refugees in our communities, and raises awareness of the urgent need to do more.

The Thousand Doves Project is part of an ongoing fundraising effort in support of our shared Refugee Ministry. Additional contributions are welcome and will help this life-giving ministry be even stronger.

The installation will be in place from June 4 until June 28 at Christ Church Cathedral (414 Sparks Street). Visit the thousand doves during a Sunday service, Doors Open Ottawa on June 4 and June 5, or weekdays between 10am and 2pm.

Thank you once again for helping spread the wings of hope in support of the Diocese of Ottawa's Refugee Ministry
