Dear Friends,
This Sunday, we move to a new phase in the pandemic safety protocol. Going forward, masking is optional for all who come into the church building. Please be mindful that we continue to support anyone who prefers to continue to mask or to ask for physical distance. If that sounds like a picture of normalcy, let’s ease our way into it with continuing care for each other. Welcome to Church this coming Sunday, 8:00 and 10:15 a.m.
We might expect that normalcy also includes a “slowing down” of our church’s community life for the summer. But we are not there yet! June is full of opportunities to be together, whether to reconnect or to make new friends.
This Saturday, there are two events so take your pick:
-
Come and visit St John’s for Doors Open Ottawa 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. While you’re at it check out many other wonderful buildings open for the day so we can see what they are really like. More information HERE.
- On Saturday, we also have a field trip to the delegation that represents St John’s at the Annual Pow Wow at Kitigan Zibi. We will drive there together leaving from the church at 10:00 a.m. See more information below in this newsletter.
- And more events below!
If you participated in the St John’s online worship services during the lockdown, you may recall that our videos featured a number of community interviews to build our connection with our neighbours. However, the interviews are not easy to find because you would have to go searching through so many weeks of worship videos. But they are important. Each interview reminds us that “We Belong to Each Other!” We now have a series of Community Connections videos – and this week we bring back two conversations.
For Pride Month, see last year’s Pride conversation with Stanton Lowe, one of the co-owners of T’s All Welcoming Pub.
|
|
And following up on this week’s provincial election, see our conversation from December with Ottawa Centre MPP Joel Harden. In keeping with Advent themes, Joel draws inspiration from John the Baptist’s prophetic voice for justice from the margins.
|
|
More and more people are coming back to church for Sunday worship. I hope you’ll join us.

POW WOW INVITATION
The All My Relations Circle of the Diocese of Ottawa would like to invite St. John the Evangelist to the KITIGAN ZIBI Pow Wow on Saturday June 4th starting at 12 noon with the Grand Entry. This is a wonderful opportunity to further our knowledge of Algonquin culture and traditions. A Pow Wow is a time of celebration, healing and spiritual growth. It is a gathering where people come together to dance, sing, seek healing, meet old friends and make new ones. The Pow Wow is a time to reaffirm the joy of life and reconnect with Mother Earth. Pow Wows welcome non-Indigenous (settlers), Métis and Inuit peoples alike.
We are looking for participants and drivers up to Maniwaki, about 1 ½ hours north of Ottawa on Hwy 5. We would leave around 10:30 a.m. from St. John’s. Return time to be determined by participants. Bring a light chair, hat, sunscreen and water. We will likely find food and many vendors at the event.
To register please clink the link below and if you have any questions please direct them to Jane Maxwell.
More information about the KZ Pow Wow can be found at:

St John’s submission to the annual interfaith celebration The Joy of Faith
Hymn 606 offers us an opportunity the put into words an inclusive and welcoming attitude towards other faiths. There is a “wideness” to who God is and who God loves. The love of God is “broader” than we can think or understand. It’s all in the song!

At the first session in July, the book will be introduced and the first few chapters discussed. At the second session in August, discussion will focus on the book as a whole.
For now... mark your calendars!
The first gathering will be on Wednesday July 6 at 6 pm at the home of Michelle Smulders and Ian Myles.
Register through the office for directions and for what food contributions would be welcome.
Come to enjoy a burger and a lively discussion!

Thanks to the wonderful support of members of St. John's, as well as their family and friends, St. John's made a major contribution to another very successful Tulipathon. Sunday, May 29 was a beautiful day for the walk, with 7 members of St. John's walking. As of May 29, the St. John's team had raised over $5,300. This money will provide rent subsidies to Multifaith Housing Initiative's tenants. If you still wish to contribute, donations are being accepted until June 30. To donate online, just click on St John's. Cheque donations payable to Multifaith Housing Initiative (with St. John's on the comment line) can be mailed to Multifaith Housing Initiative, 206-404 McArthur Ave., Ottawa ON, K1K 1G8.
Thank you again for your continuing commitment to affordable housing.

Food basket for the Centretown Emergency Food Centre
Please remember to bring an offering for the Centretown Emergency Food Centre.
St. John's is one of 23 downtown churches supporting this ministry, and our food and money contributions are essential, since the city is no longer funding it(The Centre no longer meets their funding parameters - there's no problem with its administration). Anything is welcome, but obviously not out of date cans or dried goods.
Money is better than a gift card, because the Centre deals with suppliers who sell them food at cost.
These days, and particularly in the summer, many people need this help.
Please give regularly and generously.

On behalf of the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa's Refugee Ministry, we announce that our Thousand Doves are taking flight in Christ Church Cathedral at the Feast of Pentecost on Sunday, June 5.
This unique installation of paper origami doves – created by a dedicated team of dove-makers across the Diocese – symbolizes a renewed commitment refugee sponsorship, celebrates the contribution of refugees in our communities, and raises awareness of the urgent need to do more.
The Thousand Doves Project is part of an ongoing fundraising effort in support of our shared Refugee Ministry. Additional contributions are welcome and will help this life-giving ministry be even stronger.
The installation will be in place from June 4 until June 28 at Christ Church Cathedral (414 Sparks Street). Visit the thousand doves during a Sunday service, Doors Open Ottawa on June 4 and June 5, or weekdays between 10am and 2pm.
Thank you once again for helping spread the wings of hope in support of the Diocese of Ottawa's Refugee Ministry

Alliance appeal for Ukraine
|
|
PWRDF is supporting Ukrainians forced to flee their homes due to the Russian invasion. A grant of $20,000 has been issued to an ACT alliance appeal funding the work of ACT member, the Hungarian Interchurch AID (HIA). HIA has been working in Ukraine for more than 25 years in humanitarian and development projects. It had already shipped 28 tons of food to support those fleeing to Hungary, and their staff have been working with refugees at the Ukraine/Hungary border.
