WEEKLY PARISH WORSHIP VIDEO
This St John’s Worship Video anticipates our in-person worship service on Sunday, October 17, 2021 – the 21st Sunday after Pentecost.
Meet St John’s new ministry intern, John Holgate, as we reflect on the challenging gospel of Jesus’ disciples James and John asking Jesus for a place of privilege at his left and right hand (Mark 10:35-45). John Holgate will be with us until next spring and St John’s thus has a significant role in his formation as a priest and pastor.
In addition to the meditation on the harp at the beginning of this video – accompanying the rushing waters of Ontario’s Mississippi River – this video features two pieces of music that reference and amplify a keystone verse in the gospel passage: “For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve…”
Thanks to the singers of the St John’s Choir, who present “The Servant Song.” A wonderful second piece of music, “Gift of Finest Wheat”, is presented by Cara Gilbertson, soprano, Grayson Nesbitt, tenor, and Pascal Viens, bass. Both pieces are accompanied by St John’s music director, and resident harpist, Gordon Johnston.

GETTING BACK TOGETHER AGAIN
As we move further along with the pandemic, getting together helps us feel connected to our community. We become aware of who is missing, and wonder how they are doing. And, also very important, we move forward as a church that builds relationships and welcomes newcomers. What works best for you this fall?
It turns out that Thursday morning 10:00 a.m. is not the best time for gathering, so we are putting that on hold. Some of you already have commitments at that time and weekday downtown parking is also a challenge. Is there a time that is best for you? We are having special events, both gathering in person and on zoom, but would you like a regular time to visit and socialize?
When we returned to in-person worship, with all the logistics of registering for the service and keeping safe practices, we paused our regular zoom social times on Sunday and on Wednesday.
Would you like to meet again on zoom at a consistent time, or would you prefer to try some different times? Please share your ideas about this.

"OPEN DOORS"
Good news! On October 14th we held our first Open Doors to welcome passers-by into our church. We were delighted to greet a few visitors, and know over time the numbers will grow.
For now we are open on Thursdays, a day we are invited to gather for reflection and conversation in the morning and when the Shop opens at noon. We set up from 11:45-1:15, but we’re thinking about adding other days or perhaps other times during the day.
It’s so good to be back! Thanks to those of you who have agreed to volunteer a couple of hours each week.

CELEBRATION OF NEW MINISTRY |

The installation of the Rev. Gary van der Meer as Rector of St John’s will take place on Sunday, October 24, 4:00 p.m. The preacher is the Rev. Canon Dr David Neelands, retired Dean of Divinity at Trinity College, Toronto.
While the current pandemic guidelines do not permit refreshments in church following the service, you are welcome to join the St John’s contingent that will go for an after-service meal at Deacon Brodies.

FALL COLOURS HIKE
AND DISCOVERY WALKS
Walk with St John’s and friends as we enjoy the changing colours in Gatineau Park. This hike includes a celebration of the Eucharist in the woods. Bring your camera, appropriate weather jacket, and picnic lunch snacks to share. The hike will conclude by warming up in a pub.

Saturday, October 23rd: Departure time from the church 9:30 to meet at Kingsmere at 10:00 a.m.
If it's raining we will go out for breakfast instead at Zaks 9:30 a.m.

Looking ahead in November we plan to read Courage & Complicity, a story from the Residential Schools by St John’s parishioner Claudette Languedoc. In December, we look forward to welcoming Dr Herbert O’Driscoll, former rector of St John’s, for a discussion of his book “I Will Arise and Go Now: Reflection on the Meaning of Places and People.”

CEFC, the local food bank for Centretown, is looking for volunteers to serve on the Management Committee that provides operational and policy oversight of the Centre. Volunteers with a background in marketing and communications, fundraising, or human resources would be particularly welcome. The average time commitment is about 6 hours each month, including management meetings and special projects.

BUILDING A COMMUNITY OF HOPE
VIRTUAL FUNDRAISER, SILENT AUCTION, FOR THE COMMUNITY MINISTRIES

Help deliver hope in our communities by participating in Building a Community of Hope, our 2nd virtual fundraiser and silent auction. Together, in 2020, we raised $79,000 to help five social service agencies serve people struggling with poverty and mental health issues. This year we are expanding our reach to support seven agencies: Centre 105, Centre 454, Cornerstone Housing for Women, Ottawa Pastoral Counselling Centre, Refugee Ministry, St Luke’s Table and The Well.
You are invited to join The Right Reverend Shane Parker, Community Ministries staff and participants, community leaders, and volunteers for a virtual tour of the seven social service agencies.
Experience the positive changes they have made throughout the pandemic to serve the most at-risk people in our communities. ·
Connect with them to hear about how they will deliver services as they transition into a post-pandemic world.
