THE EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY
TRANSFIGURATION SUNDAY

Dear Friends,
Great news – we are back to in-person worship in St John’s Church building this Sunday (see detailed instructions below).
We appreciate everyone’s patience with the additional week of online worship given the challenges we have had in downtown Ottawa. As you will know from the news cycle this week, the siege of downtown Ottawa is already gone from the news cycle with the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Pray for all involved, especially for ordinary people whose lives are now disrupted. In our own smaller way, we know how to pray for that.
Let’s not be hasty about moving on from the Centretown protests. A couple concerns stay with me:
- As I walked through the demonstrations, it was not for the faint of heart. In addition to non-stop horns and diesel fumes, banners and slogans, I noticed the wall along Wellington was covered with posters. The many Bible quotes professed a Christianity that I do not espouse. I found myself wondering how effective are we at articulating the version of Christianity that we do hold at St John’s. I would like to put together an orientation to Christianity as practiced at St John’s – one we could easily share with people who would lump us in with what they saw at the protest.
- Please give a thought to the local businesses between St John’s and Wellington Street. The pandemic was already a challenge – here are a few ways you can help.

This Sunday’s Pandemic Safety Details: Access through the Bell Tower entrance with vaccine checking. Masking at all times except when you receive communion. Singing is permitted for everyone. Seating is with your bubble at appropriate physical distancing. Exit the church immediately following the service at the direction of the sidespersons.
Looking ahead to Sunday March 6: Presiders, preachers, readers and intercessors may remove their masks when speaking! Lingering in the church for socializing is encouraged (no food and drink yet at this point). If you have had difficulty understanding muffled words or trying to read lips, it’s a new chapter!
Looking forward to seeing you this Sunday 8:00 a.m. and 10:15 a.m.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING
Ottawa City Council declared a housing and homelessness emergency in January 2020. You can help to change this by supporting the Starts With Home campaign. (https://www.startswithhome.ca/)
This is a non-partisan campaign to build strong public support for Ottawa's next City Council to take concrete action to solve the housing affordability crisis.
The goal is to reach 200+ organization endorsements and 20,000 individual endorsements to demonstrate that affordable housing is a key priority for our community.
By endorsing the Starts With Home movement, you will join hundreds of neighbours who care about making sure that Ottawa is a city where everyone can have an affordable, appropriate home.
Change starts with us.
Please consider joining with St John's Affordable Housing Committee and others including: The Well, Centre 454, Cornerstone Housing for Women, The Diocese, and Centretown Churches Social Action Committee, in endorsing the Starts With Home campaign.

"No More Victims" is CoSA's overarching goal. On April 29, 2022, Circles of Support and Accountability will be hosting an opportunity for you to play a role in achieving No More Victims by participating in their fundraising Gala!
With our funding from the federal government concluding in March 2022, we are seeking your support to help CoSA-Ottawa continue its vital work of preventing sexual offending. By purchasing a ticket to the Gala and partaking in the live and silent auctions, not only will you enjoy a great evening, but you will be contributing directly to your community's safety.
While we recognize that our No More Victims Gala date of April 29, may be wishful thinking with regard to future limitations on social gatherings, we also know that we are all eager to return of some sort of normalcy. We all want to be able to gather together and enjoy each other's company – especially for such a great cause, and particularly at this crucial time for CoSA-Ottawa. Rest assured that we will only proceed on that date if it is safe to do so. If it's necessary to postpone, please note that we have reserved Wednesday, October 19, 2022, as an alternate date and therefore your support would be carried over to the rescheduled date. We look forward to enjoying this exciting event with you!
Thank you for your support!
