THIS WEEK AT ST JOHN'S
THE FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY
Dear Friends,

You are very welcome to join us for worship this Sunday at 8:00 and 10:15 a.m.

Jesus calls the disciples James and John and they leave their nets behind to fish for people. It’s a well-known story that gets us to ask about our own callings. What are we turning towards? What do we need to leave behind? Let’s situate these questions in our very present moment of pandemic safety, horns blaring, questions about what route to take anywhere in Ottawa …and the extra challenges faced by community ministries including our building partners at The Well.

We look forward to returning to in-person worship in the St John’s church building on February 20. You may have heard that, according to the guidelines of the Diocese of Ottawa, we would be permitted effective this Sunday, February 5.

We decided to wait until February 20, and I hope that will make sense to you as you look over the attached Modified YELLOW safety procedures.

Over the next two weeks, we will move back into an organized worship schedule for roles in all of our worship services. If you have been a worship service volunteer, please confirm your availability and participation here. If you are interested in starting on the worship schedule, please contact me to learn more about the role and to talk about training. Please note that we especially need volunteers to be greeters, sidespersons and vaccine-checkers.

For these next two Sundays, February 6 and 13, we will continue to worship online. Over the past weeks, our attendance on Zoom has increased as more people have become comfortable with the format. Regardless of whether in-person or online, we are committed to our Sunday service times at 8:00 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. Please join us by connecting here.

TAKE NOTE
PWRDF Vaccine Equity Fund - “Pay it Forward”

The Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF) has launched a new Vaccine Equity Fund to contribute to the worldwide vaccination effort against COVID-19. Money donated to this fund will be used to support our overseas partners (e.g. Partners in Health in Liberia and Lesotho) as they prepare for vaccine rollout in the coming months.  With the cooperation of the Anglican Church of Canada and our Primate, Archbishop Linda Nicholls, PWRDF has created a fund for Anglicans who would like to pay it forward.”

The Primate writes: “We must ask how we can share the benefits of health care and vaccinations many of us enjoy, with others who need it. Canada will have excess vaccine – will we donate it to other nations? Vaccine equity is a fundamental expression of the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:37-40) through which we demonstrate our love of God and of neighbour.”

Do check out the YouTube Video which the Primate, along with a number of Bishops, have made to show their support - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ag0AZT-mecQ
If you would like to donate to the PWRDF Vaccine Equity Fund, please go to https://interland3.donorperfect.net/weblink/WebLink.aspx?name=E344492QE&id=27 and make an online donation.

He spent twenty-five years as chaplain and professor at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, where he taught in the area of faith and culture, including a course called The Apocalyptic Consciousness; this course in apocalyptic studies explored the book of Revelation and its interpretation through the centuries. John has been a frequent spokesperson in national media on themes of Revelation and apocalypticism; his course was noted by Macleans magazine for its popularity.

IN MEMORY
REST IN PEACE: Steven Sansom

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our friend Steve Sansom, who died suddenly in his sleep late last night at the Ottawa Civic Hospital due to cardiac arrest. Steve had been taken to the Civic hospital late last week and we were waiting to hear about his condition and prognosis.

It is truly remarkable and edifying that Steve passed away on this day when our Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of our Lord in the Temple. As Joseph and Mary presented our Lord Jesus to God in the Temple of Jerusalem, it is now our turn to present our friend Steve to the Lord through our love and prayers. I am currently in communication with Steve's Uncle David in Port Perry to assist in the planning of Steve's funeral ceremony. Once details and the dates of the funeral mass are set, I will communicate the details with you. All parishioners at St Theresa Parish and those of local churches that Steve liked to visit will be welcome to attend (we will provide information regarding current restriction requirements and protocols for attendance at St Theresa Church).
