St Paul's Church Community Newsletter : 5 February 2018
Message from Bishop Michael
Our return to St. Paul's to serve as interim chaplains until Easter has got off to a great start with a warm welcome on the first Sunday.
Both Father Soon Han Choi and I visited St. Paul's at the invitation of Father Walter in 2016, never thinking that we would return. Well here we are, together with a third friend
- Roy Hyslop, whose administrative and other skills have supported our ministry in several churches, since my retirement.
It is our prayerful hope that during the coming two months we will all experience something of a spiritual renewal as a church, through the opportunities of Lent and Easter, when we renew our commitment to the Risen Christ.
We shall be getting off to a good start to Lent with the Shrove Tuesday Pancake party and of course, the ASH WEDNESDAY EVENING EUCHARIST at 6.30pm on February 14th. In next week's Newsletter I will be listing other special events during the Lenten season, which will be on offer to help to deepen our discipleship through study and prayer. So watch this space - as the saying goes!
So, may God grant to us all at St. Paul's, as together we take up the work of ministry, a fresh outpouring of His Holy Spirit in the service of Christ and one another, as well as in the wider community.

Shrove Tuesday / Mardi Gras Pancake Dinner

The Rolfe Family has again agreed to organize the annual Pancake Dinner,
and they are calling for volunteers. If you can help please contact  or
To  raise money for Diabetes UK, Ben and Alice plan to climb Kilimanjaro in June, so
the pancake evening will kick off the fundraising. Climbing Africa's highest peak will be extremely challenging for both, not least because of Alice's condition, and training is
well under way.
Let us come out in number to enjoy an evening
of camaraderie, delicious crepes -
(we know Sally and friends culinary expertise
from last year)- joyful ambiance , and to support Ben and Alice in their extraordinary endeavor.

Sustaining a Ministry of Hope for Refugees in the Calais area of France

Bishop Robert Innes has chosen for 2018 to aid the plight of unaccompanied child migrants in the Calais area. The funds raised will be shared between two projects. Firstly, a safe house and outreach ministry to welcome the children run by an Old Catholic monk, Br. Johannes Maertens, who is a member of the Anglican congregation in Calais. Johannes asks us to help in the following words:
"The average age of refugees is youth to young adults, some from 14-16 years. These are very vulnerable to being trafficked as they are often unaccompanied minors. We need an urgent Christian response to this inhumane situation."

In partnership with Canterbury Diocese and the USPG, a priest is being recruited to serve as Chaplain to the Pas-de-Calais congregations and as a refugee project officer to give pastoral support and assistance. The second purpose of the Appeal is to raise funds to support this priest with financial resources for helping the children and supporting small projects.
During Lent an urn will be at the back of the church to receive your donations.
