SVdP Staff Adopts a Family this Christmas Season
St Vincent de Paul staff brought gifts and a tree to a family in need of a Merry Christmas. Mary is a 77-year-old great grandmother to 5 children. She was granted custody to all of the children four months ago and has limited assistance from her adult children. When a few St. Vincent de Paul staff came over to bring her family gifts, she told them that she was searching for a house with more than one bedroom for the kids.
Year End Giving
Did you know that you can use your IRA to fund charitable giving to the Society of St Vincent de Paul? Individuals age 70 1/2 or older are authorized to make tax-free distributions from their IRAs to qualified charities like The Society of St Vincent de Paul. These distributions can also count toward the donor's Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for 2019. For more information, contact your IRA administrator or tax advisor.
“U.S. Navy Chaplain’s Mass Kit” Donated to Veterans Museum at Balboa Park
Dear Vincentian Brothers and Sisters,

I write this on Veterans Day having just returned home from a trip to San Diego, California where it was my privilege to present, on behalf of all of us in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Archdiocesan Council of San Antonio, a Vietnam Era “U.S. Navy Chaplain’s Mass Kit” to the Veterans Museum at Balboa Park. This mass kit was issued to Father Walter Ebarb, a U.S. Navy Chaplain, who served with the Marines at Da Nang, Republic of South Vietnam, in 1968-1969. Father Ebarb’s navy career spanned 20 years, entering the service from the Diocese of Shreveport, Louisiana, returning there, and ultimately retiring in San Antonio where he was Pastor of St. Patrick’s Parish and later a substitute priest at the Sunday masses in many of our parishes. When he passed away in 2017 many of the furnishings of his home, including this mass kit, were donated to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

It was very appropriate to donate this mass kit to the Veterans Museum at Balboa Park. The museum is housed in the former U.S. Navy chapel which served the U.S. Navy hospital in San Diego. Its exhibits are wide-ranging and almost entirely dedicated to the Vietnam Era. Navy and Marine Corps memorabilia are featured throughout. The mass kit contains all of the items necessary for a Catholic chaplain to say mass in the field including, for us “old-timers”, a prayer card with the priest’s prayers and server’s responses printed in Latin. The kit also included prayers for the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick; and I can only imagine Chaplain Ebarb comforting wounded Marines with this sacrament in the Da Nang field hospital.

Veterans Day is also a good time for us to be reminded of the veterans and their families who are served by our Society here in the Archdiocese of San Antonio. Far too many of them come to our pantries and we also meet them when serving in the bistro at Haven for Hope. Let’s make a special effort to remember them in our prayers this month. Also, a big “Thank You” to the veterans who are members of our Vincentian Family. Your service continues…

Blessings,
Ed Huth, Treasurer

St. Joseph Donates Food!

St. Vincent de Paul thanks Antoinette for donating a cart of food on behalf of St. Joseph's! The food donated will go towards feeding our brothers and sisters who come through SVdP's doors.

Food Distribution at University Dialysis South
“The recent food distribution serviced 94 households and 348 individuals. We at South would like to extend our deepest gratitude.

Patients on dialysis are to follow a strict renal diet, most food pantries are not educated on this specific diet. The cost of a renal specific diet can be a financial burden to patients, this is particularly true in neighborhoods
of lower socioeconomic status. This event was extremely important to the patients at Dialysis South due to the lack of accessibility these patients face when trying to utilize traditional food pantries. Due to their treatment schedules many patients are unable to attend hours set by food pantries. Dialysis patients come to treatment three to five hours per day three times per weekly. This is excluding transportation and complications.

The overwhelming response from the patients was gratitude. The patients was genuinely surprised by the amount of food received. One patient who was scheduled for delivery arranged for pick up. They were in need of groceries for that very night. They were all truly surprised it was all renal friendly."

Respectfully Francine Sanchez, LMSW
