AMHA Convention Report
From AMHA
Lots of Morgan fun and excitement took place at the 2017 American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA) Convention. This annual gathering of Morgan members and enthusiasts took place February 22-25 in Riverside, California.

Some of the highlights of the three-day event included an equine clinic and visit to Rushton Stables with Gerry Rushton and Stacy Hennessy. Popular seminars included animal communicator, Lydia Hiby, leading makeup and hair stylist, Jeffrey Fetzer, and mental skills coach Linda Lehman.

“The convention was an exceptional experience for all this year," said AMHA Executive Director, Carrie Mortensen. "The venue was spectacular and everyone involved went above and beyond to make sure our attendees enjoyed themselves whether at the live clinic, during the seminars, or at the special events. I would like to formally thank everyone who made the convention such a great success, specifically the 2017 Convention Committee of Carol Fletcher, Tony Lee, Mari Sanderson, Ling Fu Wylie, and AMHA Staff Liaison, Erica Eulau.

AMHA has changed it region structure and thus its Board of Directors, going from 17 directors to just nine in 2017.  At the AMHA Annual Meeting of Members, C. A. "Tony" Lee, Kate Kirsch, and Karen Marlin were elected to represent the Eastern Region; Vicki Bennett, Kristin Breyer, and Harlan Grunden were elected to represent the Central Region; and Carol Fletcher, Mari Sanderson, and Linnea Sidi were elected to represent the Western Region. Bennett, of Royse City, Texas, was elected to serve as AMHA president.

More than $60,000 was earned at the annual AMHA/World Morgan Futurity Stallion Service Auction. The overall top-winning bids went to Graycliff Tony GCH and Dragonsmeade Axios each for $5,000. Net income following expenses from this auction will be distributed to the AMHA Marketing Program, World Morgan Futurity, AMHA regional shows, the AMHA Show Grant Program, and for marketing and promoting the breed.

Longtime Morgan supporters were recognized before the Morgan community on Saturday, February 25 for their dedication to the breed at the annual Awards Banquet. The Person of the Year Award honors an individual for his or her continued support of the breed and this year's honoree was Sally Plumley. Shanna Gish was awarded the Cecil Brown Memorial Sportsmanship Award, which is given to a Morgan exhibitor who has displayed outstanding sportsmanship. Inducted into AMHA's Hall of Fame was Nancy Ela Caisse and Renee Page. The Breeders' Hall of Fame honors breeders who have produced Morgans that have had a significant impact on the breed. This year's honorees were Broadfields-Highover Morgans and Silver Creek Stables. The Golden Reins Award is given to a Morgan professional who has had a 30-year career in training or instruction and this year Jonalyn Gwinup, Gerry Rushton, and Anne Speck were recognized. Stan Bodnar was selected by his peers as the recipients of the Professional Award. Mantic Mardi Gras received special recognition for her work with people with disabilities. Stefanie Putnam was selected as the recipient of the Morgan International Award for her Morgan breed promotion in Canada. Nicole Gorecki-Smith was honored with the Dr. Albert Lucine Promoter Award for going above and beyond in breed promotion. And finally inducted into the Show Horse Hall of Fame were Festival Calypso GCH, Funquest Berrybox, and The Master's Touch.

In 2018, the AMHA Convention will take place February 13-17 in
Lexington, Kentucky

A more personal view from our AMHA Director:

I just returned from the AMHA Convention and board meeting. For those of you that did not attend it was a fabulous Convention. The Convention was held at the historic and breathtaking Mission Inn and Spa.

The day before the convention there were some great barn tours. Sterling Hill with Mary and Heather Luedtke, Then to Majestic Farm with Eric Antman, Austin Eversman and Anne Speck. From there it was off to Miller Equestrian with Frank and Anne Miller and then rounded out the day was Wallen West Farms with Robb and Betsy Wallen.  A big thank you to all these barns for a great day!

The first day of the Convention was another fun filled day of beautiful horses at Rushton stables. The barn and setting was fabulous. We spent the day there watching stunning horses, hearing some great speakers, watching presentations and enjoying lunch which was catered by the famous 'In and Out Burger'.

By Friday the Convention was in full swing and had some great speakers and panels. The most important part was great conversations and catching up with our Morgan family. Heather Luedtke sent us all on a trip down memory lane at the awards luncheon.  It was a fun slide show showing how clothes have changed along the years and we got to remember some great horses in the process. Then the show turned live with models showing the fashion through the years. There was even a western outfit from the 50's!  It was in stellar condition I might add! Thank you Heather!  What an awesome job!

The grand finale was the always fun Awards Banquet. It was a wonderful evening honoring this year's award winners.  Tony Lee did his usual awesome job making the videos for each winner!  The work he does always amazes me!  It was a great evening. Congratulations to all of this year's winners!

NWMorganNews
Love Morgans?
Would you like to receive the NWMorganNews each week? Especially designed to keep "Morgan Lovers" in "the loop", it's free and interesting. To be added to the NWMorganNews subscriber group you must e-mail Shelley, the editor, at SKEdling@aol.com, and simply give your first and last name and say "I would like to receive the NWMorganNews."

Here is what the NWMorganNews is:

It is not a club newsletter, it is a REGIONAL Morgan newsletter. Membership in a Morgan Horse Club is NOT necessary (although clubs in our Region would love to have you, wherever you are), and there is no subscription fee. The NWMorganNews is a weekly electronic newsletter that goes to over 500 Morgan folks, predominantly in the northwest (OR, WA, ID, MT, Canada) but also across the US and even outside the US!

We include member news (new foals, sad farewells, awards, farm happenings, etc.); club news (meeting notices, seminars, etc.); and nationals news items; also equipment and tack for sale; and, ALWAYS "Morgan Wanted" ads; but, no room for horse(s) for sale....too many!

Subscribers send me information in a form I can "copy and paste" - since I do have a busy life outside the newsletter! (Don't send flyers, articles, or other items for me to "edit.")

Sorry, no commercial advertising and no attachments - subscribers have a legitimate concern about SPAM and viruses.

I can add anyone to our subscriber list, then if they later decide they do not want to receive the mailing, all they have to do is tell me to please remove them from the group. Presto, it will be done!

The newsletter will always be to and from SKEdling@aol.com , so that subscribers can receive their letter by blind copy and have their privacy protected. The subject will always say NWMorganNews. Subscribers’ addresses are not sold or shared.

This newsletter was started in mid-2000 in an effort to give a greater sense of "community" to the Northwest Morgan people; to promote Morgans; to increase membership and activity in the local clubs; and, to encourage support of all Morgans, their owners, clubs and Morgan functions.

Please send me a note and join the fun!

Fee increase & special permit rile horse campers

March 25, 2017

Horse enthusiasts are challenging a proposed fee that would make camping at Northrup Creek Horse Camp 11 times more expensive a night beginning this summer.

The Astoria Forest Protection District, citing budget cuts, released a plan that would require campers with horses to apply for a special-use permit. The permit would charge $175 per night per campground for a minimum two-night stay. Campers in previous years could pay a $15 per-night fee upon arrival at the site without a permit.

The Oregon Department of Forestry has called for $13 million in cuts in the upcoming state budget, 70 percent of which will come from districts in northwest Oregon, Astoria Assistant District Forester Ty Williams said. The department has instituted a hiring freeze along with the cuts, meaning just three staff members — based out of the district office an hour away from Northrup Creek — manage the five campgrounds in Clatsop State Forest. With all of the expenses associated with maintaining the campground, the department likely will not receive any profit from any fee increases, Williams said.

Though open through November, the 11-campground site just north of State Highway 202 between Jewell and Birkenfeld reaches peak use typically from Memorial Day weekend through September. In 2015 and 2016, campers used the site an average 21 percent of the available time in these months, according to the state.

Northrup Creek, which also accepts a limited number of other campers, is the lowest utilized of the campgrounds in Clatsop State Forest, Williams said.

On top of the added revenue, the special-use permit will allow the state to better track whether or not campers are paying for the full length of their stay.

“We’ve been discussing the use and lack of use for several years,” Williams said, “knowing with these cuts we won’t be able to offer the same level of service we offered in the past.”

Guaranteed spots

Horse campers at Northrup Creek have complained in the past about not having a guaranteed spot to camp prior to their arrival. The permit is partially designed to guarantee spots to campers, making it more likely they will make long trips to the site. Also, the fee may entice campers to bring larger groups to the grounds.

“People won’t travel a long way out here if they aren’t guaranteed a site,” said Jennifer Bunch, treasurer of Oregon Equestrian Trails North Coast Chapter.

But Oregon Equestrian Trails, which helps maintain the state-owned campground, day-use area and adjacent 9-mile trail for horse riders, has strongly opposed the fee hike and two-night requirement. Bunch, of Svensen, and group member Diane Berry, of Astoria, who led the effort to build and maintain the camp before and after its opening in 2005, estimate they use the camp three to six times each summer. The group’s members have spent hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars working on projects such as tree removal and construction of a storage shed. A trailhead at the camp is even named after Berry.

The main draw to the camp is the variety of terrain and wildlife on the trail, members say.

“They called us the jewel of horse camps in the state,” Bunch said.

Though they say they will still make the annual trips, others may not be as inclined.

“It’s totally unrealistic for this camp,” Berry said. “That will effectively kill the camp.”

Public comment

Williams held a meeting with Oregon Equestrian Trails’ members in late February about the proposed plan that seemed to cause confusion. Members decried the fact that the camp was being closed without a public comment period

“He told us it was closing and that it would only be available for special-use permit,” Bunch said. “That’s why we initially were up in arms, and we still are up in arms. We were under the impression it was a done deal.”

But Williams recalls telling them the camp would still be open and that the special-use permit plan was just a proposal. He said he asked for alternatives from the group but did not receive any at the time.

“I told them I wanted to stop any rumors the horse camp is closing,” Williams said. “I was totally honest and upfront with them from the get-go.”

The Department of Forestry then announced in early March it would accept written comments from last Monday through May 4 on the department’s webpage or at twilliams@odf.state.or.us. Williams so far has received dozens of phone calls and emails about the camp.

‘Really cranky’

State Sen. Betsy Johnson has also heard from the public about the camp.

“The contacts with my office were really cranky,” she said on her weekly radio show in early March. “Just calling them and saying, ‘You’re closed,’ was not the right solution. I’m not really impressed with how the department is handling public outreach right now.”

Proposed alternatives have included keeping the rate at $15 per night for a period of time during the summer or scrapping the two-night requirement. Oregon Equestrian Trails has offered to handle more of the maintenance load and devise new ways to promote the camp.

The Astoria District Recreation Advisory Committee will hold a meeting with public comment on April 4 at 5:30 p.m. at the Department of Forestry’s Astoria Office.

Williams doubts the current proposal will be the one the department finally decides to implement.

“It’s not a perfect plan. I know that,” he said. “There’s been more awareness of the lack of use at Northrup Creek. I’ve seen that as a positive.”

Youth of the Year Contest
Qualification Rule Change
The Youth Council voted unanimously to change the way youth contestants qualify for the Grand National Youth of the Year Contest at their local level contest. Instead of only the winner of the local contest qualifying for the Grand National, now any contestant who scores over 800 points at their local contest will be qualified for the Grand National Youth of the Year Contest! This means there could be more than one youth representing their local show at the Grand National thus making the Youth of the Year Contests more inclusive! AMHA is very pleased by this change and looks forward to seeing the number of Youth of the Year contestants increasing.

Youth Contest Coordinators please note: You must now report all contestants who score over 800 points to Katie Hodges at AMHA when turning in your Contest Report Form (instead just reporting the winner and reserve).

If you have any questions about Youth Contests or qualifying for the Grand National Youth of the Year Contest, please contact Katie Hodges at (802) 985-4944 ext. 401 or Katie@morganhorse.com
