Board Members Absent:  Karen Breckenridge, Kathy Christensen, Carol Dombrowsky, Anne Margaret Korver, Diane Pixlee, David Silver
Quorum not present.
Guests: Open to all MHAO members and their guests, and to anyone interested in the Spring Clinic, MHAO, or the MHAO Stallion Service Auction.

Secretary’s Report:  We are attempting to get minutes approved by the Board & out to members more quickly via the newsletter. No minutes to look at or approve today. Last meeting minutes were approved by the Board and then published in the Stable Sheet prior to this meeting.

Treasurer’s Report:
General Checking $1,813
General Savings $25,481
OMC $3,989
Futurity $3,019
Total = $34,302
A full financial report is distributed to the Board for every meeting. The budget currently has a negative net total, so we are watching our pennies. Hopefully today’s Stallion Service Auction will help us with that. We need to at least breakeven on our show this year.

Oregon Morgan Classic - Show Committee Report:
This will be the last of the all-Morgan shows. In future we will have to include another breed[s] to survive.

We will have 2 dinners at the show. On Tuesday there will be a free spaghetti dinner and on Friday we will have the exhibitors’ party where the show picks up half the fee for each attendee.

All the Hall of Fame banners from Far West will be displayed. They also plan to have a sponsors’ banner naming ALL the sponsors for the show.

There will be a trainers’ meeting on Tuesday and also an AMHA rules forum.
The 3 judges will be Donna Longacre for dressage, Larry Bolen, and Richard Petty for working western.

The premium books will be out shortly.

Show High Points: Three are planned for jr. exhibitors [hunt, western and overall] with a possibility of others. There will be a versatility award – must show in 5 of 8 divisions. A costume class with a Disney theme is planned. There will also be a Judge’s Choice Award.

Two rings will be running – the main arena and a dressage arena.

Youth of The Year will be held on Thursday afternoon. Trail will run on Friday morning in the Emerald Ring.

Amateur, ladies and jr. exhibitor classes will all count as qualifiers for the championship classes. Futurity performance classes will qualify for the junior horse championships. The 3 year old futurity classes will be walk – jog/trot only.

Stalls are available for $50 for one day or $140 for Tuesday thru Sunday. Those coming in earlier than Tuesday must pay an additional $25 per day. Unfortunately the show cannot provide free bedding this year but it will be available for $10 per bag.

Dave Lionberger will be making TV loop ads for our sponsors for viewing on a large screen TV in the area of the arena. Close date is June 1.

Promotion:
The Washington Expo was a success. Many thanks to Diana Pyle, Erica Parker-Trager, Dannette Cook, Susan Karagianes, Elaine Rosenberg & her friend Miriam, Anne Robitaille, Karol Forner, & John & Gay Adams from MHAO who filled in when the Washington club members had an emergency.

Kathy Christensen is handling the MHAO booth at NW Horse Expo. She still needs volunteers to help with the booth.

The Youth and Promotion committees are working together to focus on outreach to schools, 4H, FFA, OHSET and any other groups they can think of to get them to come to OMC. Also looking at coordinating an Open Barn day function for around the State to go along with the Day of the Morgan program out of AMHA in October.

Youth:
Ann Lowden had a job change that requires more traveling and a heavier work schedule. She has stepped down from the Board. Diane Pixlee will now serve as co-chair with David Silver. They will be working with the Promotion committee. See Promotion report for more information.

Membership:
Membership is in transition. We are getting the club computer set up so we can pass it from one Membership Chair to the next going forward. Kathy Christensen is the Chair of the membership committee and is the primary contact for any questions. She will pass membership information on to the other Board Directors who need it.

Currently we have about 70 members renewed out of 124 we have listed in the 2015-2016 Directory. Looking for ways to get reminders out to those who have not renewed yet.  New membership directory will come out in early November.

Open Incentive:
No actual report available today. The club offers open incentive funds to members who take their horse to anything other than a show on the Morgan circuit where they pay a fee. That could be expos, clinics, parades, demonstrations, all-breed shows,, etc.  Members keep and turn in receipts to Carol Dombrowsky to receive up to $25 per event for a maximum total of $100 per year per membership. Forms and an explanation are available on the MHAO website.

Trail Program:
At one time MHAO offered a Trail Program. It has not been active. The board will be revisiting this area in the future. It is thought that perhaps we could set up a program similar to the new one AMHA offers now, My Morgan & Me, which replaced the AMHA Pathways program.

High Point Awards:
Nothing to report at this time.

Website:
Everyone is encouraged to check out the new website. Dallas would like to have members send in history information and pictures. She will have the sponsorship form available to view and possibly be able to accept payment for sponsorships via the website. Once the premium booklet is available, Dallas will see that it is available on the website. New website is: www.morganhorseoregon.com.

Facebook:
Kathy DeFazio reported on the 2 different Facebook pages for the club. The MHAO site is for club business and the stallion auction has its own page. Members are encouraged to post their Morgan activities on the club page as well as their own. Sales can be posted from the 1st to the 5th of each month. We want to use our club Facebook page to encourage club discussion.

Stable Sheet:
We still need an editor for the Stable Sheet.  We cannot continue to no have communication between the Board and the MHAO membership. Right now Gay is collecting info & publishing it monthly via email only. Until we get an editor, that is the best we can do.  The close date is the 20th of each month.  Every quarter Gay will put out an edition that focuses on membership. Members are encouraged to send in information anytime. In between the quarterly editions she will publish club oriented information and things that need to be published before the quarterly version due to timing.

Advertising is available for $25 for a full page and goes down from there. Classified ads are free.

Futurity:
We are hoping for 43 renewals, right now we have 31 with 7 still working on it. We are working with those who have not renewed due to some hardship situations. Some not renewed yet are for horses that have been sold that may not be renewed.

FYI to Futurity horse owners and for any MHAO member who sells a horse:  if a horse is sold to a non-MHAO member, the new member gets a free one year membership in MHAO.  If the horse has been nominated to the Futurity, its status in the Futurity goes with the horse.  Please encourage the new owner to be a part of the club and to remain in the Futurity.  All Futurity participants must be members of MHAO.

Send your ad requests for the Futurity booklet to Gay.  The booklet goes to all the exhibitors at the show and are also distributed up and down the West Coast and to Grand National. A full page ad runs $75. Half page ad is $50, and the rates go down from there.  Close date is June 1st so people need to get their ads in now.

If you see anyone throwing the Futurity booklet away at OMC, please encourage them to return the booklet to the office. The booklets cost a lot to produce and we use them for promotion of our Stallion Service Auction and our Futurity. We don’t want to waste them.

2-yr Stallion calendars are still available for sale featuring our 2016 SSA Stallions. Proceeds are used to support the Futurity. We still need to breakeven on our cost to print them. If you would like to purchase one please call Gay. (503) 936-4276

Stallion Auction:
The website had 1,000 more hits than last year.  The SSA Facebook page was also more active. We offered 20 wonderful stallions this year and numerous other items. Final results will be published in the newsletter.  Our goal is $8,000 for bids on Stallion Services.

Breeding Panel
Ethics, Economics, Trends,
and Current & Future Ideas Involved In The Breeding
World of Morgan Horses
Breeding Morgan horses was the topic of our panel brought together by Kathy DeFazio.

Our panel pictured left to right:

Jenni Grimmett - a Veterinarian from Sandpoint ID,  Jenni is an avid supporter of the Morgan breed who trail rides and participates in Cowboy Dressage.  She is a blogger with a strong following and has some well respected ideas on breeding, marketing, and the trainability of Morgan horses.

Eleanor Mason - is the 2012 AMHA Hall of Fame breeder and the owner of Marvelous Morgans - well known for their kind nature and pretty elegance.  Marvelous Morgans are primarily Lippitt with some Jubilee King rolled in through Royal Glow.  Ellie was a long time resident of Arizona, but now resides in Silverton OR.  She bought her first Morgan in 1956.
Daryl Hopson - is a well known Trainer, Judge, and Certified Tax Accountant.  He and his partner, Greg Ferguson, own the Trafalgar Farm in Walla Walla WA.  Daryl is well qualified to speak to breeding trends & the economics of breeding in the Morgan world.
Sharon Harper - owner of Kerry Morgans.  Sharon has been breeding Morgan horses featuring the blood of Pecos, Ben Don, Nocturne, and Aires B since 1961.  Her farm was originally located in Illinois, but she moved to Oregon 10 years ago.  We are delighted to have her in our area.

Dallas Bolen served as the Master of Ceremonies for our Clinic and deftly guided the panel through the various topics.  There was discussion on breeding trends, the role of 'type", breeding for size or color, how the breeding landscape has changed, and many other topics.

Breeding ethics were discussed and whether a stallion owner or Breeding Agent could or should refuse to breed their stallion to a mare they did not think would nick well.  There was even discussion on form to function and soundness within the breed.  Different methods of breeding came up and opinions were given on how AI and the availability of frozen semen has changed the process and the quality of the breed.

in general it was felt that large Morgan Breeding Farms are falling away and that small breeders are playing a larger role in the future of the Morgan horse.  Temperament is an important trait, and that if we are to increase the Morgan market we need to get more of our quiet well mannered Morgans out into the public eye.  We need to do more promotion of the family Morgan.

Bottom line to all this is that regardless how we use our Morgan horses, we have one standard for what a Morgan horse is supposed to look like.  It is the responsibility of all breeders to come as close to that standard as they can.

It was a very interesting clinic that even drew questions & comments from those watching from afar.  Everyone in attendance enjoyed it.  Kathy DeFazio live streamed the clinic on Facebook so that those unable to attend in person could still watch it.  The clinic was also recorded, and a UTube was put on the MHAO club Facebook page.

Click here to watch the clinic

Thank you to Kathy DeFazio, Dallas Bolen and our wonderful panel!

All attention was on the speakers during the Clinic portion of our event.
Kathy DeFazio (background) live streamed the Clinic to Facebook during the clinic.  Dallas Bolen was our MC for our panel and kept the topic moving.  Excellent job by both Dallas & Kathy!
There were 20 Stallions to bid on and lots of "Other items"!  This just shows a portion of the display.  It took 4 tables plus floor space to display all the items and bid sheets.  Bids were made by attendees of the event and by phone.

Good food in a casual atmosphere.  The cookies were wonderful as a follow-up to lunch.

I always find it ironic, that each week I find myself talking with different clients, about similar themes - What I've grown to learn is that even though all of our struggles are unique, they're also strangely similar...That we are generally more alike, than we are different.  That insecurities plague us all, and that no one is immune.  That we all have something that is driving us crazy, stressing us out, and making us question ourselves and other people.

Since I've been doing a lot of listening this week, I thought I'd share what I've learned from my clients...I hope it may help you, too!

Lesson 1:  Lower the bar, lower the bar, lower the bar:  Why, oh why,do we hold ourselves to nearly unattainable standards?  We convince ourselves that our home has to be "guest ready" all the time, or that our kids need organic-vegetarian-GMO-free-homemade meals 3-5 times a day, or that walking for 30 minutes isn't good enough - we MUST jog for 40 (Yeah...I just got called out on that one today!).  This is hard...I get it...but what can you take OFF of your to-do list this week?  What can be 'good enough' (which is both good, AND enough) as it is?  Where can you lower the bar...and set expectations and goals that you can actually achieve AND feel good about, instead of falling short and beating yourself up over?  People please - give yourselves a break from time to time!

Lesson 2:  "When people show you who they are, believe them" - Dr. Maya Angelou:  This has come up a lot for my clients this week...Your boss is an asshole, your daughter's best friend's mom is a gossip, or the co-worker in the next cube over is a legitimate adult-sized bully.  So here's the thing...I love believing the best about people.  I also truly believe in the idea that people can change...that I might be a raging maniac this morning, but 7 cups of coffee later I'm sweet as pie.  There's also this other thing that I believe...When we expect people to be different than they are, or to have the same standards, values and ideas as we do, and then they don't, we are so very disappointed.  Instead, let people be who they are, and when they show you that, BELIEVE THEM.  I promise - they know best who they are....not you.  Try engaging with these people with a healthy dose of curiosity instead of assumption, and acceptance instead of attachment.  So your neighbor is a flake?  Good to know - now you won't ask him to feed your dog while you're gone.  He can be a flake, and YOU don't have to suffer for it!  #winning!

Lesson 3: Having boundaries is (almost always, if not always) KIND:  When you say "no" to things, your "yes" becomes much more powerful.  When you disallow what you don't want in your life, the things you do allow become so much more valued. When you believe in your own worth, value and opinion, it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks of you. When you teach people how to treat you, you may find that you're treated much more kindly. When people know what to expect from you, they feel safer around you.  Know your values, know what matters, and then make THAT your priority.

So there - that's it!  When I found that most of my conversations this week with clients were centered around these three main topics, I wondered if sharing our thoughts might help you too - If so, awesome!  If not, maybe next time!

Washington State Horse Expo
March 3-5, 2017

MHCWS called MHAO for help, and we responded.  Family emergencies affected the Washington club's ability to complete its goal of having a Morgan booth at the Washington State Horse Expo at the Clark County Expo Center on March 3-5, 2017.

Many thanks to Diana Pyle, Erica Parker-Trager, Danette Cook, Susan Karagianes, Elaine Rosenberg & her friend Mariam, Karol Forner, Anne Robitaille, John Adams, & Gay Adams for heeding the call.

Saturday was the busiest day.  Volunteers handed out copies of Shelley Bullard’s sales list for those trying to find a Morgan horse to buy and AMHA posters for kids to color.  That poster is great because on the inside it gives a history of the Morgan horse as well as a picture of our Morgan standard for a stallion along with listing the parts of the horse for kids to learn.  Kids love it and it gets the Morgan horse in front of them.  It is a great tool for planting seeds for the future.  Kids also like the “I love Morgans” stickers and really like the washable tattoos.

Erica Parker-Trager put out forms to complete that went into a drawing for a day at Blackburn with Eduardo Zavala Sanchez at Singing Hills Stable in Oregon City and offered the opportunity to “drive a Morgan horse”.  That was very popular.  Erica kept the names from the drawing to use to help with invitations to a possible open house in the future.  At the booth, there were also  Morgan Horse Magazines to give away, donated by Theresa Peterson for that purpose.

Flyers laid out for the Washington club were for the Key Classic, Timber Creek Stables, & Fire Run Farm.

Numerous membership forms and brochures for MHCWS and a few for MHAO were handed out.  We hope the result will be new members in both clubs.  All in all it was very successful and worth doing.  MHAO is glad we could help.

NW HORSE FAIR & EXPO
March 24-26, 2017
I would like to give a HUGE THANK YOU to Erin Silver, David Silver, Lenore Smith, Leanne Roth, Pam Bennett, Leslie Arnould and Shelley Bullard for the time, energy and enthusiasm you had in promoting the Morgan horse and MHAO at the NW Horse Expo. (Kathy Christensen was there, too).  These folks managed to fit this into their busy schedules and share the love they have of our breed.
I must say that business was brisk with lots of people stopping by to chat.  15 pounds of candy later, we had 41 people sign up with interest in joining MHAO.  I have their names, emails and addresses and am going to send out some correspondence to them.

It is amazing to realize the number of Morgan owners out there that had no idea that this club existed.  We will be discussing more ways to improve our club's visibility.  It would be nice to broaden our membership with more people that trail ride or pleasure ride.  The more people like that the easier it might be to get things like organized trail rides, poker rides etc. put together.  Our club is for all Morgan owners & enthusiasts, not just those that show.

Health Alert

Marion County, Oregon, Horse Tests Positive for EHV
March 28, 2017

A horse from Marion County, Oregon, has been euthanized after testing positive for equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1).

The Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) reported that the horse began showing acute neurologic signs on March 18 and was referred to the Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine for veterinary care.

“The diagnosis was made on March 20 by a positive test for both the EVH-1 wild type and neurotropic genetic markers,” the EDCC said. “When horse’s condition deteriorated, it was euthanized.”

The horse’s home facility was quarantined and biosecurity measures have been implemented.

A second location in Marion County with a high-risk contact horse has also been quarantined,” the EDCC reported. “Quarantined horses are being closely monitored and there is no indication at this time that the virus has spread to other horses beyond those being quarantined, and there are no traces to other states.”
