From Your Board Of Directors
From The President
Hi all,

I keep hearing people say it is Spring, but that is hard to believe as I look out my window today. The temperature is in the 40's, in the 30's overnight. Thunder and lightning I associate with Spring, but usually when the temperatures are a little higher. Now they are forecasting more snowflakes again. Hey, Mother Nature! Enough already.

Hopefully the winter weather will pass quickly and we will see warmer weather soon. I definitely hope so! Your Board is working hard to explode into Spring!
Our plans for our Spring Clinic on Working Equitation are progressing nicely and we are hoping for clear roads and warmer temperatures for everyone planning to attend. It has proved to be a popular subject! So much so that we are expanding it into Sunday to meet demand. All riding spots are full, but now we have lots more room for auditors on Sunday. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to come learn about this exciting new Sport! More about the clinic later in this newsletter

Our MHAO General Membership meeting will be on the lunch break of the Spring Clinic on Saturday. Please attend and audit the clinic, too. Let us know you are coming so we can be sure to have enough food to treat you to lunch. Thank you to the Bullards for sponsoring our lunch. We will be looking for you. Parking is tight, so please carpool if you can. Maybe meet in an Oregon City parking lot somewhere and bring just one car in instead of several.

Everyone is so busy now! It is foaling time. Shows are getting planned and some are even happening already. Our stallion service auction is in full swing with online bidding up and ready for your bid. If you are a breeder, take advantage of this program. We feel so honored to offer 31 wonderful stallions, with nominations still open. Check out our auction website for the most up-to-date information. Other items are being sought and are offered, too.

There is just a lot going on, much more than I have listed! See the newsletter below for more information .See you on April 15th or 16th! I hope you can attend..

MHAO Breeders' Cup Futurity
Will You Have A Foal Born In 2023?
Our futurity was created in recognition of the importance of stallion owners, breeders and trainers to the preservation and continuation of the Morgan breed in our area. The mission of the futurity program is to aid in the promotion and development of horses owned by MHAO members. It is designed as a 5-year plan that follows a new born foal through its 4-year-old show season. Futurity classes are held at the Oregon Morgan Classic horse show in Eugene OR. More information can be found on the Auction/Futurity website or by reviewing the Futurity rules via the links below:

Click here to access the latest version of the MHAO Futurity Rules
Here is a link to the auction & futurity website:

Recent change:
We have expanded the Futurity halter classes into two equal Divisions. One is traditional, just like the halter classes we have always offered. The other is for Sport/Western horses. Both divisions now offer 2 classes for weanlings (colt and filly), and3 classes (stallion, mare, & gelding) for yearlings and for 2-yr-olds. Both divisions offer a Sweepstakes class for all futurity horses placing 1st or 2nd in their qualifying futurity halter class. Horses shown in the Sport/Western division are to be judged standing square. No cross entry is allowed between the 2 futurity divisions in any one year. Judging follows USEF rules. No change was made to any of the performance classes offered. All futurity horses are encouraged to enter any of the futurity performance classes. The 3-yr-old Futurity saddle classes remain as walk-trot.

At the Oregon Morgan Classic, futurity halter classes will take place on Wednesday night. The halter Sweepstakes classes take place on Saturday night. Performance futurity classes are woven into the schedule throughout the show. Let Gay Adams know early what classes you will be entering so she can work with Karen Breckenridge to be sure those classes are scheduled.

For questions or assistance, contact Gay Adams, (503) 936-4276
Benefits For Entering The Futurity:
  • Prize money is earned for showing your horse in Futurity classes at the Oregon Morgan Classic. Those who have shown have earned back more than they have paid in for futurity fees.
  • Prize money is offered for Futurity classes thru your horse's 4-yr-old year. Classes offered are age appropriate. Halter classes are available thru the horse's 2-yr-old year. Performance classes are offered from 2-yr-olds thru 4-yr-olds. 2-yr-old is driving only. 3-yr-old under saddle performance classes are walk-trot classes.. Halter, driving, and 4-yr-old classes do qualify horses to show at Nationals in like titled (not World Futurity) classes..
  • A High Point award and prize money is offered to the 4-yr-old Futurity horse who has earned the most points thru the 5 yr program. You will receive an individual award, be listed on a perpetual award, and earn additional money.
  • Bonus money goes to the stallion donor and the mare owner at breeding of Futurity horses who are the result of a breeding purchased thru the MHAO Stallion Service Auction if the foal wins Futurity Sweepstakes Champion or Reserve Champion.
  • Futurity Sweepstakes classes are offered for horses entered in Traditional Futurity Halter classes and for Sport/Western Futurity Halter classes.
  • Promotion of your futurity horse thru the MHAO Breeders' Cup Futurity Booklet. for each year they are nominated to the Futurity.. Show others about your breeding program or about that young horse you are raising..
  • All participants in the Futurity need to be members of MHAO. As a member, you will receive the member reduced rate for any ad you place in the MHAO Breeders' Cup Futurity booklet.

MHAO Is Looking For Volunteers
MHAO will Have A Promotion Booth At The Oregon Ag Fest - April 29-30, 2023 at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem
Last year over 20,000 people attended Ag Fest to touch, taste and experience the incredible world of Oregon agriculture, in a fun-filled, festive environment. Our two-day event, aimed to help families better understand where their food, fiber and flora come from, is a unique learning experience, where hands-on exhibits make learning about Oregon’s vast agricultural industry educational and entertaining.
We strive to bridge the gap between urban and rural life, and to share the wonder and abundance of Oregon’s bountiful and diverse harvest. Most importantly, we do this in a family friendly way, where kids 12 and under receive free admission, and virtually all activities at the event are free of charge. Thanks to our sponsors, kids ride ponies, plant seedlings, watch sheep get sheared, pet farm animals and much, much more! Come check it out for yourself: join us the last weekend in April for the 36th annual Oregon Ag Fest.
Volunteers are needed to help man this booth.

Sponsorship Packages:
We need your support!!! Attendance at OMC was down last year due to the virus scare and we need to get back on track. We have some large goals this year both to increase the fun at the Oregon Morgan Classic, to increase attendance, and to increase our Sponsorship support. We hope you are able to help us.

Help us reach out to more potential Corporate Sponsors!! We are also looking for more Corporate Sponsors. If you know a company that might support us, we hope you will let them know about the packages we have available, and the advertising benefits we will give them in return. Custom packages can also be negotiated.

Don't forget our Silent Auction at OMC. All businesses we talk to are also asked for donations to our Silent Auction. It is another way they can highlight their products and services and help us support our youth scholarship fund as well as the show. You can contribute to the silent auction, too!

Businesses with a wider market for their products might also be interested in advertising in the MHAO Breeders' Cup Futurity Booklet. See more information on that below.

Top 5 Tips For Getting Your Horse Ready For Spring
Spring is the time to make an appointment with your veterinarian for an annual wellness exam and to make sure your horse is up to date on vaccinations before mosquito season. If you plan to travel, it may also be a good idea to ask your vet to pull blood for a Coggins test.

Horses will be eager to munch on fresh grass if it has been covered by snow over the winter months. Avoid sudden turn out on lush, green grass, especially for easy keepers or those prone to metabolic issues. Rather begin turning them out slowly, a few hours at a time and build up to the full turnout time.

Spring can be a time for it to be muggy and buggy. If you know your horse has seasonal allergies or sensitivity to springtime insects, putting them on an allergy supplement like Platinum Skin & Allergy as soon as the weather turns warm can help prepare them for allergy insults.

Some horses are prone to weight gain in the spring when they have access to new nutritious pasture. It may be a time to cut back or eliminate grain in their feeding program, and use a comprehensive supplement like a Platinum Performance® Equine to complement a simple forage-based diet to cut overall calories.

In many places, spring rains can make for a muddy environment. Hooves can become softer and more prone to thrush in the extra moisture. Platinum Hoof Support can be added to provide extra nutrients for strong hooves and healthy growth.
On The Muscle - Managing Common Muscle Disorders In Horses
Muscle disorders or myopathies are a common cause of poor performance and health complications in horses. Muscle conditions that historically were classified as “Monday Morning Disease” are now better defined by a broad spectrum of disorders that result in rhabdomyolysis or ‘tying-up’ and clinically manifest with muscle pain or cramping, exercise intolerance, muscle weakness and stiffness. Many muscle disorders present with similar clinical signs, but the causes are varied. Some muscle diseases are present from birth as genetic disorders, others are acquired disorders that develop spontaneously during adulthood. Other horses may suffer from exercise-related episodes, which have been documented in approximately 3 percent of exercising horses.

An Announcement From AMHA
Important Classic Pleasure Shoeing Clarification
For Immediate Release - March 22, 2023
LEXINGTON, KY— Please be advised that there have been NO changes to the Classic Pleasure Shoeing section of the USEF Morgan Division rules for 2023 competition year. The current rule must be followed for the entire 2023 competition year.
Therefore, for ALL competitions held in the 2023 competition year, the rule remains the same and states:

MO 103.3

In Classic Pleasure classes, horses may be shown with or without rim pad(s). Rim pads must follow the inner and outer edge of the shoe and the connection at the heel must not be wider than any aspect of the shoe. The entire sole and frog of the foot must be visible with the exception of that connection at the heel and the length of the toe including the shoe and pad(s) must not exceed 4 ½ inches.

The AMHA Board of Directors has formally submitted an official rule change proposal to the USEF Board of Directors for approval at their summer meeting with an effective date of December 1, 2023. If passed by the USEF Board of Directors, this rule WILL change effective Dec. 1, 2023 for the 2024 competition year. At that time, the rule that was put through the forums to remove the restriction on pads but keep the toe length including pad and shoe to a maximum of 4 ½ inches will become effective. If passed, any type of pad will be acceptable so long as the foot measures in accordance with the maximum length described above.
AMHA will keep the membership updated on any changes and notice of approvals.

If you have any questions regarding this rule or the process, please contact Executive Director, Carrie J. Mortensen at the AMHA office on her direct line of 859-405-0746 or via email at execdir@morganhorse.com.
United States Saddle Seat Teams Selected for the US Saddle Seat Invitational

The United States Saddle Seat Invitational, hosted by the US Saddle Seat Association, will be held in New Orleans, LA at Cascade Stables June 27 through June 30, 2023. This competition will feature two teams from the US and a Canadian Team.
Selectors worked tirelessly to narrow a strong pool of applicants to choose the two talented teams. The US teams will compete against each other and Canada. Therefore, there will be two independently named US teams, the Stars and the Stripes.

Congratulations to all riders selected, including the Morgan riders!
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐬 𝐇𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠…
I’ve never seen a more misunderstood animal more than 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐬 𝐇𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠.

𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞…
I’ve been trying to tell you that I am in pain, but you don’t seem to listen.
I show you that I’m in pain by not being willing to work but you just call me 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐛𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧 or 𝐥𝐚𝐳𝐲. Instead of helping me, you just 𝐤𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫.
I show you that I’m in pain by rearing when you try to ride me, but you enjoy showing people you can sit to a rear. Instead of getting off and listening, you just say “𝐇𝐞’𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬, 𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐭!”

I show you that I’m in pain by throwing my head in the air, but you just say it’s one of 𝐦𝐲 𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬. Instead of helping me, you just buy 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐚𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐬 so that I can no longer 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐲 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐢𝐫.

I show you that I’m in pain by bolting, but you just get scared and decide I’m not the one for you. You sell me and I still remain as 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐬 𝐇𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠.
It’s our responsibility as animal owners to do right by them, horses can’t speak, they communicate through their actions. So we need to listen!

9/10 times “negative behavior” is caused by pain, the rest is learnt behaviour. Either way I always check for pain first.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐬 𝐇𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, deserves the world. The amount of tolerance, loyalty, patience and trust the hurting horse has, is something I can only dream of having.

And Then There Is HB3214...

It prohibits a person from using specified types of animals in a traveling animal act. It provides certain exemptions from prohibition. It punishes by maximum of six months’ imprisonment, $2,500 fine, or both. Authorizes the court to require a person convicted of violation to forfeit the animal used in violation. Of course horses, dogs, llamas, cattle, etc are listed. If you are against it, let your congressman know. Depending on how it is written, it would be good bye horse shows and other competitions involving the listed animals..

They offer individual thru business type memberships. See more in Section 3 of this newsletter. MHAO is a member of the Oregon Horse Council as an organization, and this is one of the reasons why.
