MHAO Stable Sheet -
April 2025
| | An American Legacy - The Morgan Horse | | Just one section this month! | | From Your Board Of Directors | | |
Happy Spring to you all-
The weather is getting better but its not quite there yet. Those warmer days are just around the corner and soon we will all be able to enjoy our horses in warmer weather with those longer days! Don’t know about you but I’m looking forward to that. In the meantime, there are events coming up that will allow you to enjoy the Morgans even if you can’t ride out in the weather.
As I mentioned in my last month’s message, the Stallion Service auction is in full swing.
| | | |
Gay Adams has 27 beautiful Morgan stallions in the auction that represent different breeding lines and the diversity within our breed. There is a type for all those interested in breeding their mares. In addition, to the stallions being offered, there are “other” items available for you to bid on. Currently, there are items such as a mini vacation getaway, stalls for OMC and Key or C-Fair, ads to be placed in various publications and even a clinician offering their expertise! Please check the auction out on a regular basis as that very often new items will be added. Remember the auction ends on Saturday, April 19th at 3:00 PDT. If you have questions, please contact Gay Adams at sunstonemorgans@comcast.net or call (503) 936-4276.
Coming up on Sunday, April 13th, our annual spring clinic will be held at Silver Tail Farms in Creswell. Patricia Carlson, our program chair, has arranged for a Western Dressage clinic featuring Deborah Spence as our clinician. Ms. Spence has trained, ridden and coached students from Intro to high level dressage during her career. We are fortunate to have such an individual with such a wealth of knowledge to come and instruct the attendees. For further information, please contact Patricia at patricia@dressagemorgans.com or call (503) 851-1950.
At the time of this note, there are a few spots available for riders and space for auditors as well.
In addition, the annual General Membership meeting will be held during the lunch break at the clinic. Please come and join the meeting so that you can meet your board members and be up to date with the clubs activities. The Board wants to hear from you, too. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Kathy
at mike-kak@Q.com or call (503) 391-9047.
Finally, on April 26th and 27th, MHAO will be represented at the Oregon Ag Fest held at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem. The Ag Fest is an event that introduces the agriculture industry to families to help them better understand the important role agriculture plays in their lives. Of course, one of the important animals in agriculture is the horse and more importantly, the Morgan horse. MHAO has for the past two years had a presence at the Oregon Ag Fest by having a booth and an equine representative of the breed there. Over 2,500 people will visit the Ag Fest and this is the perfect opportunity for them to be introduced to the first true American breed, the Morgan horse. MHAO will be there for both days and will have an educational booth set up. If you are interested in helping volunteer at the booth and sharing you love, knowledge and excitement about the Morgan horse, please contact Erin Silver at
silvermesamorgan@msn.com or call (971) 600-8933.
As you can see, there is a lot going on! Your board is working hard to provide a little something for everyone. Please take advantage of what is being offered!

If you have not renewed yet, please do. If you know someone who owns a Morgan horse but is not a current member, please ask them to join. We are stronger together. The main mission of MHAO is the preservation and promotion of this wonderful breed. We can't do it without members. MHAO offers a full array of programs for our members as highlighted in this newsletter and on our website - www.morganhorseoregon.com. The website will be updated this month. Your voice is very important to our success. We need you as a member in order to remain a viable and highly valued organization able to serve you.
Individual Membership - $30 (gives you 1 vote)
Family Membership - $35 (gives you 2 votes)
Another way you can help: if an MHAO member sells a Morgan horse to a first time Morgan owner, that new owner can have a free MHAO membership in the year of purchase. Just fill out a membership form with them and send it to Karen Breckenridge as outlined on the form. Where it asks for payment information write "First Time Morgan Owner", and who the horse was purchased from. It will be our job to earn their paid membership thereafter. Send me their email address so I can add them to our distribution list for the Stable Sheet - send to sunstonemorgans@comcast.net

All Types Of Competitions Count
OMC Counts Double!
New category added for Half Morgans. They have one category for all disciplines
| |
Here Is What Is New!
- Points earned at the Oregon Morgan Classic count double!
- There is a new category for Half Morgans for all disciplines. You need to be able to document the horse's Morgan ancestry.
- Remember, all point submissions need to be sent in by US Mail. It's too easy for email submissions to be lost or not come through.
- Although not new, don't forget about our Virtual Show category.
Basically every type of competition out there is covered by this program. Let us know if we missed one. But you need to be a member of MHAO to be eligible, and you need to turn in your points.
Here is the scoop on our program and how it works.

Sierra Breckenridge has put together a study guide for you to use in getting ready to compete in the Youth of The Year contests both locally and at the main event. Thank you Sierra! This guide is now available on our website, or you can download it here.
The Youth of the Year winner at the Oregon Morgan Classic for the Senior Level becomes eligible to represent OMC at the National competition. If they go to Nationals and compete in the YOTY program on behalf of OMC, MHAO offers a reimbursement of up to $400 toward their expenses. A copy of their travel receipts are required.

Volunteers Needed to Man A Booth At The
Oregon AgFest at the
Oregon State Fair Grounds in Salem OR
April 26-27, 2025
Free for children 15 and under, free parking
| | |
Last year over 25,000 people attended Ag Fest to touch, taste and experience the incredible world of Oregon agriculture, in a fun-filled, festive environment. This two-day event, aimed to help families better understand where their food, fiber and flora come from, is a unique learning experience, where hands-on exhibits make learning about Oregon’s vast agricultural industry educational and entertaining.
This event strives to bridge the gap between urban and rural life, and to share the wonder and abundance of Oregon’s bountiful and diverse harvest. Most importantly, it is done n a family friendly way, where kids 15 and under receive free admission, and virtually all activities at the event are free of charge.
Thanks to our sponsors, kids ride ponies, plant seedlings, watch sheep get sheared, pet farm animals and much, much more! Come check it out for yourself: join us the last weekend in April for the 38th annual Oregon Ag Fest.
The Morgan Horse booth is one of the only exhibits of a riding horse at this event.
Help us promote the Morgan horse!

Whether You Show or Compete - or Not - We Have Two Programs That Apply To All Morgan Owners
Half Morgans Are Now Eligible For These Two Programs.
Proof of Morgan Ancestry Required.
| | Open Incentive Reimbursement Program | |
You can receive up to $30 per membership as reimbursement for your participation in various types of events with your Morgan horse. You can recieve $10 per event, a to a maximum of $30 per year. MHAO events are excluded where an MHAO discount is usually offered. See the flyer below for more information. This program makes membership in MHAO very reasonable. We thank you for getting your Morgan horse out in front of other people. There is no better way for people to be introduced to our wonderful breed. Thank you!
For questions on the program, contact Sandi Humphfres at firemed13@yahoo.com.
For questions about your reimbursement contact Karen Breckenridge at wylieriley@aol.com.
| | The MHAO Ride/Drive Program | | |
This program is about tracking your time with your Morgan horse. Earn patch awards that you can display. Historically, when seen, these patches make people ask about your horse. This is another way our members can draw interest to our breed. The only exception to your time counted is your actual competition time in front of a judge at a Morgan horse show. Your warm up and practice time counts, all your time at an open show or any other place or event counts, all your time at home or on the trail all counts. It is all between you and your Morgan horse. Patches and awards will be handed out at the annual Award Banquet.
Click here to download detailed information on the program, an enrollment form, and a tracking sheet. All members should enroll in this program. There is a one time enrollment fee that remains active for the life of your membership in MHAO. That fee helps us to cover the cost of our awards and patches.
If you have questions or need assistance, contact Sandi Humphfres at firemed13@yahoo.com.

Deadline for nomination is May 15th
| | |
Wording on the plaque will be adjusted to reflect the reason for receiving this award.

Qualifications:
1.Member of MHAO at time of service, or a member of the Morgan community.

For those of you who have been wondering about the lack of “Maus-Moments” lately on our Facebook page:
This past November, Maus underwent colic surgery at the Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Large Animal Hospital, here at Oregon State University. Our boy is back to a hundred percent; a reflection of the skill of the veterinarians and staff that did an outstanding job dealing with his colic and his aftercare.
While Maus is back to his normal self, we have made the decision to retire him from competition -- he has more than met our hopes as a sport horse and as a breeding stallion.
So, we brought him home after over ten years of being away from the farm at Kim’s. He has settled in super well and will have a second career as a family riding horse as well as continuing to be offered to the public as a breeding stallion cooled/shipped. We are hoping to also be able to offer frozen semen later in the season.
While we are retaining at least one daughter for our own program, we will have more of his babies available in the future. And we will certainly be filling everyone in on how his babies are doing as their competition careers develop!
We are so glad Maus is back on his feet!

Oregon Cowboy Dressage
Alliance
| | |
Mission Statement:
Soft Feel (or Fresh Rein) is the guiding principle of Cowboy Dressage™. It is a wordless, intimate and for some a spiritual communication within the partnership between horse and rider. Soft Feel is not only sending messages but having the sensitivity and awareness to feel and receive the message the horse sends back.
The timing and use of the release, relaxation, preparation and execution are the basic fundamentals of Soft Feel.
Since Soft Feel is the mission of Cowboy Dressage™, it will be scored with emphasis on lightness, harmony, finesse and partnership as a priority. Balance, cadence, carriage, control and performance are additional areas on which the horse and rider will be judged.©
