Our General Membership Meeting and Award Banquet will be a celebration of our year. It will again be held at the Willamette Heritage Center in the Dye House in Salem OR. I hope you will all attend. And the banquet is a chance for us to recognize everyone who has worked so hard thru the year.

Come one, come all! See you there!

Praying for everyone's safety thru this fire season.

General News & Information

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Team USA can’t catch a break at the Paris Olympic Games.
Following a “disappointing” 7th place finish in eventing, as per chef d’equipe Bobby Costello, the Americans have been eliminated from team competition on Day 1 of Dressage.
Marcus Orlob and Jane, the first American pair in the ring in Paris, had their test stopped by the judge at C during the canter zig-zag due to blood on the horse’s leg.
According to a statement issued by the FEI, the mare hit herself in the leg just before entering the ring, resulting in a “small knick” on the right hind fetlock that began to bleed during the test. Under the FEI’s “blood rule,” fresh blood anywhere on a horse’s body during the test results in automatic elimination.
“She is currently back in stabling, relaxing in her stall, and the cut is no longer bleeding,” continued the statement.
“I was happy, excited to go down centerline. Clearly Jane [was] too,” said Orlob of the mare’s reaction to the crowd upon entering the arena at the Palace of Versailles.
“It was a little bit of a, I would say, explosive entry. I believe she may have nicked herself in the entry, because I never had this issue. She felt in the ring amazing. I was super happy with her. Once she went down centerline, she settled nicely.
“It’s the beginning, the crowd, that’s where she gets nervous. And then once I got going, she felt more and more relaxed. I was really happy. I said, ‘OK, I got this now.’ And then I was really, really sad to hear the bell, because I knew something’s not right.”
Under the unique three-member team format of the Olympic Games there is no drop score. As a result, Team USA is now eliminated from team competition and Orlob’s teammates Steffen Peters (Suppenkasper) and Adrienne Lyle (Helix) will now compete as individuals in the Grand Prix test.
Lyle and Helix scored a 72.593 in the Grand Prix. Peters will compete as part of Group G on Wednesday.
The Americans won team bronze at the 2016 Rio Games and the team silver at the Tokyo Games in 2021.
Team USA Wins Silver
Robert Ridland: “That was sport at its absolute best”
“We came here with a strong team, arguably one of the strongest team in the last three Olympics,” said U.S. chef d’equipe Robert Ridland.
“We have three of the greatest riders to ever have ridden for our country on this team—”
”And me,” quipped Karl Cook.
“—in Kent Farrington, Laura Kraut and McLain Ward,” continued Ridland, joking, “and then we brought him [Karl].
“But what that is is the present and the future. And, Karl was honored, excited to be on the team. The first thing he said when we talked about it, was, ‘I’m here to do whatever I need to do to help the other three.’
“Well, guess what? He did.”
Just two hours before the Thursday’s team qualifier, Cook was tapped to compete in place of Kent Farrington when his mount, Greya, exhibited an allergy concern.
The Californian, making his Olympic debut, answered the call with a foot perfect clear for Team USA in the Team Qualifier and another in Friday’s Team Final.
“I have to say what Karl had to do this week, it’s one of the hardest things to do,” said five-time Olympian McLain Ward, who delivered the final and clutch clear for USA on the day.
“To be sitting there in the wings, so to speak, supporting, it’s already a hard role because our our dream is to ride at the Olympic Games and win medals. To do that and be the utmost professional and gentleman and then in the 11th hour to come in and deliver those two clear rounds, for me, and I think, Laura, that was all the respect to the world as a competitor.
“That is not easy.”
The top 10 nations in Thursday’s qualifier advanced to Friday’s medal round where the scores reset to zero. Great Britain dominated on the day finishing on just two time faults for the gold. Team USA fought from a four fault start by Kraut and Baloutinue to the silver medal with clears from Cook and anchor rider Ward.
It’s a moment that the Olympic rookie is still processing.
“I think I’m still digesting,” said Cook.
“It’s amazing being able to compete with people I’ve watched and respected and learned from for so many years. And, to be on the inside, watch how it all works, and to be able to go in and jump and do it all together—it’s what you hope for when you’re a kid hoping to go to the Games one day. It’s really special.”
The medal is USA’s fifth since 2000. The Americans won team gold at the Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Olympics and team silver medals at Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020 and now, Paris 2024. Notably, Ward rode on all those teams. Kraut rode for the USA in 2008 and 2020 and Ridland has served as chef since 2016.
In Tokyo, at age 55, Kraut became the oldest woman to win a medal for the USA.
“I’ve broken my record!” she laughed. “I am officially, again, the oldest woman medalist I think since 1907.“
But if you ask Ridland, he expected as much from his dream team.
“We came here expecting high things,” he continued. “But you never know. The sport has so many ups and downs, the format, there’s a whole lot that goes into it. The competition is stronger than it’s ever been.
“So it was an amazing Games and I mean, just looking at those grandstands, there’s not an empty seat in the house. This is the sport at its best. It just doesn’t get any better.”
Olympic jumping continues Monday with the Individual Qualifier and wraps on Tuesday with the Individual Final.
WDAA World Championship Show Future Stars Will be Awarded through the Lynn Palm Western Dressage Fund
Since 2021, the Lynn Palm Western Dressage Fund has awarded outstanding junior riders for their efforts at the annual WDAA World Championship Show with the Lynn Palm Future Star Award. In its early years as a single award to the highest scoring junior rider, it has since evolved into a $500 award for the highest scoring junior rider at each level from Introductory through Level 5, potentially awarding a total of $3500.
In keeping with the utmost integrity and quality of horses and riders, the qualifications for eligibility are such that each score must be a minimum of 65% with a minimum of 5 riders in each Level. These parameters are set forth to encourage participation among junior riders and have them strive for excellence in their performances.
Previous Future Star Award winners hailed from Florida, Colorado, Alabama and Texas in Introductory through Level 3 partnered with several different breeds. It is wonderful to see growth of the sport for juniors but there is always room for more. Lynn Palm is proud to support the up-and-coming riders. “I always look to the future of our sport. The young riders are growing in numbers and skill level. My hope is that each winner of the Future Star Award continues to represent Western dressage in a way that spreads the message of sound training and harmonious partnerships with exemplary sportsmanship.”
The Lynn Palm Future Star Award enables promising youth riders to continue their Western dressage training and education and will be awarded annually at the WDAA World Championship Show. For junior riders to enter the 2024 show, information is available at wdaaworldshow.org with entries opening August 1 and closing August 30.
Fact of the Day…
Polo, believed to have originated in Persia around 600 BC, began as a training game for cavalry units, spreading across Asia to become a popular sport among nobility. It was introduced to the Western world in the 19th century by British officers stationed in India, where it gained international acclaim and modern rules were established.
From Nora Mains & Marvelous Portia
Trying to catch up on Summer Adventures with Marvelous Portia. On June 21-22 we completed a 25 mile and a 35 mile ride at Lily Glen Horse camp out of Ashland. It was very challenging. Hot and technical and so very beautiful. Thanks to all the volunteers, vets and Ride manager! Thank you Dominique Cognee for the great pictures! On the 35 mile ride- Portia tripped and went down in the woods at 15 miles and I came off. BLAM! Went my HitAir Vest! Even though I hit the ground and was bruised, I was not hurt. These vests save us from serious injury. Like a helmet, I will not ride with out it. At any rate, I rolled around on the ground for too long and Portia felt the need to get going without me. I trailed her for about a mile until she stopped with her foot in the reins. No one saw it…so did it happen? We finished the last 20 miles without the vest. Tough ride, great ride!
Great tips from Nora for riding out on the trail.
So glad no injuries to horse or rider.
BLM Gives Land For Equestrian Only Trails
Trail and endurance riders, take note: BLM to give 1280 acres to Equestrians to create ‘Equestrian Only’ Trails known as the Fredenburg Trails
   In the fall of 2023 Butte Falls held public meetings asking for input on what trail user groups wanted regarding the 400 acres that was purchased around Butte Falls. All user groups were in attendance. This acreage was purchased as a protective barrier from future fires, as the town barely escaped the Obenchain fire which came within a quarter mile. …
Proposed New Equestrian Trail in
The Columbia Gorge
Proposed New Trail In The Columbia Gorge - April 30, 2024 by Back Country Horsemen of Oregon
   In the summer of 2023 a collaborative group began to develop a plan to create a recreational trail that was originally conceptualized in the Management Plan for the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.
   The area is a mix of USFS, state and private land, all of which is within the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area. The “Mosier To The Dalles Trail” would lie between Oregon Hwy 30 and State Rd/Sevenmile Hill Rd. On the east end at The Dalles city limits Wasco County acquired 187 acres for “recreational purposes”. That property borders the Fort Dalles Riders Club property. The project is being led by Friends of The Gorge and the USFS. Also included in the planning are area Tribes, Wasco County, the cities of Mosier and The Dalles, community representatives and other interested parties and individuals.
   The first comment period results by users were (in order of number of responders) – 1) hikers, 2) bicyclists, 3) other, 4) equestrians. We do not know what makes up the “other” category. There are many questions yet unanswered – access points, parking (especially for trailers), and are e-bikes included to mention a few.
   The date of the spring open house and second comment period have not been set, but it is important that equestrians be heard when they are. Project information and maps can be viewed at www.mosiertothedallestrail.org and to sign up for email updates. The form includes a space to identify an affiliation with an organization.
Congratulations to Kiana Pearson - 2024 Amanda Hill Young Breeders Incentive Grant Recipient
Lexington, Kentucky: The American Morgan Horse Educational Charitable Trust (AMHECT) proudly announces that Kiana Pearson of Ballston Spa, New York, has been awarded the 2024 Amanda Hill Young Breeders Incentive Grant. Kiana was chosen from a pool of ten exceptional candidates.
The Amanda Hill Young Breeders Incentive Grant celebrates the memory of Amanda Hill and her connection with the equine industry. Amanda was a long time Morgan owner, exhibitor, and breeder whose passion for the Morgan horse was highlighted in her volunteer work across the Morgan industry.
Young Morgan breeders have dreams, and this grant is offered to help them achieve those dreams. It may be awarded annually to a young AMHA member (under the age of 40) who is developing a breeding program intended to strengthen the quality of the Morgan breed. Amanda had a vision that recognized the need for younger generations to develop and continue these breeding programs so that the love of the Morgan horse could be shared from generation to generation.
Kiana has been a Morgan enthusiast for over 12 years now – more than half of her life - and is embarking on her long-dreamed-of breeding program in the spring of 2025. Hoping to follow in the footsteps of such amazing breeding programs of Dragonsmeade, Ledyard, and more, Kiana envisions solidifying the foundation bloodlines to produce Morgans with wonderful conformation, temperament, and intelligence. She plans to develop a solid, enduring program and advocate that breeders protect their Morgans for their lifetimes. Already in pursuit of her Veterinary Medicine Degree, Kiana plans to, in many ways, give back as much to the Morgan as it has given to her over the years.
On Thursday evening at the New England Regional Morgan Horse Show in Northampton, Massachusetts, Kiana was presented with her check for $2,500 by AMHA President Steven Handy, Paula Kimball (Amanda’s mother), Matthew Hill (Amanda’s brother), family and friends.
Congratulations to our 2024 Amanda Hill Young Breeders Incentive Grant recipient, Kiana Pearson! We look forward to welcoming your Morgans into our family!
