From the Board
President's Message
Greetings members-

I am hoping that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and unlike last year, were able to celebrate the holiday with friends and family. 2020 was a year to remember but 2021 saw little advances into some sense of normalcy, whatever that is these days! Let's hope that 2022 continues the march to life as we know it.
As you are aware, we held our Awards Celebration virtually in November and while it was not the way we wanted to do it, the call was successful. There were 21 awards given with 3 overall high point winners being awarded during the meeting. I want to thank Erin Silver for all her hard work in keeping track of all those who nominated their horses for the awards and for her precise tabulating for all the points. Not an
easy job, but she handled it with no problems. There will be some changes in the 2022 year for high point so stay tuned for information regarding these new modifications .

In addition, we held our voting for the board using a format similar to what AMHA does. Thanks to the hard work done by our membership chair, Doana Anderson, we were able to utilize the online voting program as a trial. This program helped to streamline the process and resulted in a savings for the club in not having additional expenses for a mass mailing. We hope our members found it more convenient as well. We are always trying to find ways to conserve our funds and add value, and this certainly proved to do that for MHAO. Thank you Doana!

I would like to also thank three board members who are stepping down from the board: Shirley Champion, former Chair of the Ride/Drive and Open Incentive programs; Karen Weiderman former Facebook Administrator and Stable Sheet Editor (continuing as an Editor); and Martha Woodland, former Sunshine chair - all gave selflessly of themselves and were active and vital members of your Board. Thank you so much for your service..all your work and dedication to the Board and MHAO was and will always be appreciated. These ladies all have busy lives but stepped up and gave of their time..thank you!

In addition, I would like to thank each of the Board members for 2021, Julie Nygaard, Karen Breckenridge, Doana Anderson, Sara Breyman, Nancy Eidam, Mary Grimes, Sandi Humphfres, Grace Martin, Diane Pixlee, and Erin Silver for all your work. The membership is is so fortunate to have these individuals dedicating their time to promote the breed and to serve all in MHAO. Without them, the club would grind to a halt. THANK YOU!!

On a personal note, I want to thank Gay Adams for all the help, hand holding and guidance she has provided to me. Her experience as previous President was and is invaluable to me. Gay truly loves the Morgan horse and is dedicated to MHAO and the promotion of our Morgans. The club is very fortunate to have someone like Gay advocating for the horse and our members. Thank you Gay..for everything.

Finally, I would like to extend to all of you warm holiday wishes for a safe and healthy holiday. Enjoy your time with your family and friends and celebrate all that is good!

Kathy Christensen, MHAO President

Section 4.3      Nomination, Election and Term:
Sixty (60) days prior to the annual meeting in November, the Board of Directors shall make known to the membership, by notice in the corporate publication or by other means, positions to be vacated in the coming year and request candidates for such positions. The Board shall prepare a ballot, setting forth one (1) or more candidates for each position to be vacated, along with space for write-in candidates. Such ballot bearing a unique ID number to prevent double voting shall be made available to the member in paper form and/or electronically thirty (30) days prior to the November meeting. A paper ballot shall be mailed together with a self-addressed envelope if requested of the Secretary or Membership Chair. An electronic ballot may be delivered in PDF form or via an online system.  Numbered ballots may be returned by mail to the Secretary or Membership Chair, be voted on via the online system, or be brought in person to the Annual November meeting. A ballot mailed or voted on prior to the meeting may be retrieved by the member before the annual meeting is called to order and the final vote is counted

Alert to all MHAO members
As an MHAO member, if you sell a Morgan horse to a first time Morgan owner, that first time Morgan owner qualifies for a free MHAO membership in the year of purchase. Fill out a membership form for them and send it to Doana. Be sure to make a note that they purchased their horse from you. Again, the horse needs to be purchased from an MHAO member to qualify, & it needs to be the new owner's first Morgan. We will do all we can to earn their membership renewal for a fee from that first year forward.
Help MHAO grow, and help that new Morgan owner get integrated into the Morgan community. We look forward to welcoming them. They do not need to reside in Oregon.

We are so grateful for our members!
Without you MHAO & its programs including the Oregon Morgan Classic Horse Show would not exist.

MHAO Stallion Service Auction Is Open For Nominations of Stallions & for Other Items
Click here to download a stallion nomination form

MISSION STATEMENT: The committees of the MHAO Stallion Service Auction and of the Breeder’s Cup Futurity are dedicated to the promotion of the Morgan Horse. We strive to support the breeders of the Morgan Horse by offering ways to publicize their breeding programs and to offer access to high quality breeding stallions. It is also our goal to increase the excitement about the Morgan Horse, and to draw the Morgan Community together.

BENEFITS TO DONATING A BREEDING OR OTHER ITEM:
  • Each stallion will receive a webpage on our MHAO website and on the bid site dedicated to them. It will include as many pictures as the stallion owner likes as well as pictures of offspring. Other item donors will also have information on the website.
  • There will be press releases on Northwest Morgan News, MHAO newsletter (Stable Sheet), MHAO website, MHAO Facebook Page & the MHAO Stallion Service Auction Facebook Page, in The Morgan Horse Magazine, on The Morgan Blast, etc. There is heavy emphasis on advertising the stallions included in our auction.
  • The Stallion Auction will be promoted at the Oregon Morgan Classic (OMC) Horse Show with donated stallions highlighted at the show. OMC is the largest Morgan Horse Show in Oregon and one of the largest in the Northwest.
  • The name of all stallions with a bid will be put into a hat. A winner will be drawn to receive a 2-page centerfold spread in the MHAO Breeders’ Cup Futurity Booklet. This booklet is a high quality magazine that is circulated at the three largest Morgan shows in the Western Region and at Nationals.
  • The MHAO Stallion Service Auction is the only Stallion Service Auction in the Western Region.
  • Each stallion will receive a full page standard format color ad in the MHAO Breeder’s Cup Futurity Booklet. Each other item donor will receive an ad also.
  • You will receive promotion of your stallion through other Morgan organizations in the Region.
  • Minimum starting bid is $700, or an amount set by the stallion owner (higher or lower, but no lower than $500).
  • Bidding is online and open from mid-February to mid-April. Phone in bids are accepted from those without access to a computer. The final close date will be set once we know the publication dates for The Morgan Horse Magazine.
  • Bonus payments are made to breeders and stallion owners when a foal that is the result of a breeding sold through the MHAO Stallion Service Auction becomes an MHAO Breeders’ Cup Futurity Sweepstakes Champion or Reserve Champion at the Oregon Morgan Classic Horse Show.
  • Funds from the MHAO Stallion Service Auction are used to support the MHAO Breeders’ Cup Futurity which is the only remaining traditional Futurity in the Western Region.

We would love to have the opportunity to promote your stallion or your product/service. Interested? Contact Gay.

Western Region Report From The 4th Quarter AMHA Board Meeting
Written by Mari Sanderson
Well, this final report as your AMHA Western Region Director has proven to be harder to write than I thought. Let me get through the particulars of why you are receiving this email first.

The AMHA board met in Lexington, KY on November 5 and 6, 2021 for our 4th quarter meeting. Much was accomplished during our meeting
Some highlights included the approval of two Western Regionals, that being Morgan Medallion Classic Charity Horse Show (July 21, 2022 – July 24, 2022} in Las Vegas, NV and C-Fair Charity Horse Show (August 3, 2022-August 7, 2022) in Monroe, WA.
Ballots for the upcoming election have been mailed to all eligible voters and electronic ballots have also been e-mailed to those with valid e-mails on file. Please vote in the fashion you choose once you receive your ballot. Sharon Boyce Bender is running unopposed. We MUST have a quorum to ratify her as a Board member. You know what that means? It means we all must vote throughout the entire Western Region. Please exercise your right to vote. I have already submitted my ballot via electronic voting; it was very easy and simple.

We are joining with UPHA for a Convention in Orlando, Florida, January 4th-8th, 2022. The AMHA Annual meeting will be held Thursday, January 6 in conjunction with this event. Additional information including the schedule, hotel reservation link and registration form can be obtained on the UPHA website at https://www.uphaonline.com/national-conference. We hope you join us there!

Now for some notes of appreciation.
Spring of 2007 at Diamond Jubilee, George Arnold and Cindy Mugnier approached me to run for Region 7 Board of Directors. I was astonished and honored. It took some thought but I decided it was my chance to give back to AMHA and the Morgan Horse. I ran in 2008 and was elected to the Board in February of 2009 in Sacramento, CA.
Dallas Bolen, Mari Sanderson, & Terri Sturm
It has been an honor to not only serve as Director of Region 7 but for the Western Region. I have been honored to also serve as President and Vice President of AMHA, during my time in office. It has been an e ticket ride the entire time. None of these accomplishments could have happened without mentors, YOU the members, close friends and of course the support of my family. My mentors included George Arnold, Cindy Mugnier, Sherry Cole and Georgie Green. The previous Executive Director Julie Broadway and the present Executive Director Carrie Mortensen have both been there during trying times to help support projects I was assigned to with insight and just plain support. I myself concluded that patience, which I lack, is a virtue. To wait 24 hours before responding was a hard lesson learned, and I am still working on that. My pledge to the members in 2008 was to represent the members and to have no agenda other than what was best for the breed and the association. I have tried throughout the years to stick to that commitment. I hope I have succeeded.

We are very lucky to have a very focused and dedicated board. The future looks bright. If I can help in the future, I am only a phone call or email away.

Thank you.
With great respect...

Respectively submitted by Mari Sanderson
on behalf of the Western Region Directors including
Terri Sturm and Dallas Bolen

ON THE MUSCLE
Managing Common Muscle Disorders In Horses

Muscle disorders or myopathies are a common cause of poor performance and health complications in horses. Muscle conditions that historically were classified as “Monday Morning Disease” are now better defined by a broad spectrum of disorders that result in rhabdomyolysis or ‘tying-up’ and clinically manifest with muscle pain or cramping, exercise intolerance, muscle weakness and stiffness. Many muscle disorders present with similar clinical signs, but the causes are varied. Some muscle diseases are present from birth as genetic disorders, others are acquired disorders that develop spontaneously during adulthood. Other horses may suffer from exercise-related episodes, which have been documented in approximately 3 percent of exercising horses.

What has been most helpful in looking at this condition is recognizing that when horses have muscle breakdown, it is the same thing as saying an animal has colic or an animal has a cough, it is a symptom, not one specific disease in itself.”

Happy Feet
The Art of Nourishing the Equine Hoof

Sound hooves are the result of many things. Age, breed, metabolic rate, environmental moisture, illness, shoeing and exercise all influence horse hoof health, and the most important factor may simply be genetics. While the intricacies of the equine foot are clearly multifactorial, one thing is certain: the quality of the hoof always has a nutritional component. Inadequate nutrition can be the difference between having the potential for a hoof problem and actually developing one. Providing the dietary nourishment that the hoof needs can optimize health and provide the essentials needed to reach its potential. Because the hoof is in a continuous state of growth, dietary changes can positively or negatively affect its overall integrity. A balanced, forage-based diet is the foundation for all areas of equine health, and the hoof is no exception. Horses on well-balanced diets are much less likely to have foot problems. The balance of vitamins and minerals, the balance of net calories, the balance of activity level and the stage of life of the individual animal makes nutrition as much of an art as it is a science.

Some Perspective
Have a bad ride? A client driving you crazy? A saddle you want just financially out of reach?
I'd like to take this time to remind you that...

Hunter/jumpers: we ride horses in circles and jump sticks for a living and then we let some person tell us our horse did, or did not, jump the sticks as pretty as another horse.

Dressage: we trot in circles and let someone tell someone else to write down whether or not we are circley enough for the circle club

Eventers: we decided jumping out of an airplane without a parachute wasn[t exciting enough, so we run at mach speeds towards walls, ditches, and small lakes to see who can do it fastest.

Barrel racers: we spend all of our time fine tuning our ability to turn 3 times faster than anyone else

Ropers: we catch calves that are technically already caught

Steer wrestlers: we wrestle an animal that didn't even know there was a wrestling match coming their way

Team Sorters: even on our worst day, we didn't spend as much as the cutters.

Reiners: see dressage, add speed.

Cutters: we let several people tell us we're better, or worse, at not letting calves hang out with their buddies.
Team penners: we take caught calves, and make them a little more caught

Mounted shooters: because we've used this skill ever in the last 200 years

Endurance: we take 10 times as long, and 10 times more money to get somewhere an ATV could've brought us.

Western Pleasure: we poke around at wine sipping speeds in the equestrian equivalent of a ball gown.

Trail riders: cheers. Y'all have it figured out

It's not that serious y'all, so just have fun!
- Ali Hamman

Some disciplines are not represented here, so a few more ideas were added by others (I know we could keep going):

From Mary Anne Morrison: Saddle Seat people ride a slick pancake saddle on a red hot high trotting horse - just on the edge of 'outta control ' and we be grinnin' like a Mule eating briars hollering YAH BOY!

From Crystal Sokolowski: Combined Driving..... The equivalent of Eventers but with vehicles!!

From Kathy DeFazio: Halter classes are like swimsuit competitions.

Again, there are many more disciplines we could include..... just have fun with it everyone!

Thank you Kathy DeFazio for sharing on Facebook.

We Are The Army of Survivors and #WeRideTogether
#WeRideTogether, a movement to empower, inform, and unite the equestrian community and beyond on sexual misconduct prevention, has partnered with The Army of Survivors, the only national organization advocating for and supporting child athlete survivors of sexual violence, to shine a light on the endemic issue of sexual abuse in all sports. At the center of the collaboration is a powerful, multi-part PSA showcasing survivor voices from a variety of sports, including Gymnastics, Football, Diving, and Equestrian.
The PSA is the fifth in the #WeRideTogether series of educational and eye-opening digital PSAs.

"Not Alone" kicks off the collaborative PSA series and weaves together the raw and emotional accounts of abuse by gymnast and Larry Nassar survivor Grace French, World Class Diver John-Michael Lander, Pro Football star Dwight Hicks, and Olympic Show Jumping Silver Medalist Anne Kursinski. This multi-voice, multi-sport PSA series will also feature "My Story," a nod to each of these victims’ journeys, as well as the first-person accounts from Nassar survivor and gymnast Danielle Moore, and Grand Prix Show Jumper Francie Steinwedell-Carvin.

Each narrative shares common themes: how normalized predatory behavior is for the victims, the overarching power imbalance between athlete and coach, and the overall lack of accountability by those in a position of power. Each story also underscores that grooming not only takes multiple forms but it also takes time.

"There is strength in asking for help, and we hope that #WeRideTogether gives people the strength and a safe place to come forward and be heard. By sharing the voices of athletes with different experiences from different sports, we are helping people to understand they are not alone,” said Carrie Kehring, #WeRideTogether founder.

#WeRideTogether is a true movement and cultural shift that demands increased accountability from trainers and coaches, gives survivors a safe platform to share their voices, and aims to diminish the stigma and fear of coming forward.

"It is our hope that through the #WeRideTogether movement, athlete survivors of sexual violence hear they aren't alone," said Julie Ann Rivers-Cochran, executive director of The Army of Survivors. "By sharing survivor stories, we are working toward our commitment to creating transparency, accountability and awareness surrounding sexual abuse in all sports, at all levels."
PSA #5: You are not alone. You have a voice. And there's an army here who will listen. We are The Army of Survivors and #WeRideTogether

Holiday train rides return to Oregon railroads for 2021 season
Most holiday train rides were canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, but almost all have returned for 2021 with new precautions in place. Holiday train ride operators are abiding by Oregon public health mandates around the COVID-19 pandemic, which currently require passengers to wear face masks except while eating or drinking.
Passengers can find more information on individual holiday train rides at railroad websites.

Another Morgan Horse Resource
The Morgan Stock Horse Association
The Morgan Stock Horse Association is an active group of Morgan stock horse breeders that have formed this organization with the goal of educating and promoting the Morgan Horse to those who are not aware of the Morgan breed outside of the Morgan community.
Our aim is to promote the Morgan’s aptitude for stock work, ranch horse, Cowboy and Western dressage, trail pleasure, packing, vaquero horsemanship and Mounted Cowboy Shooting uses, to those wanting a high quality/stylish mount.

The purpose of this website is to also help the buyer find breeders that have ranch stock for sale and stallions available for breeding service on the “Farm Directory” page.

We welcome all registered Morgans and leave it to the individual farms to promote their favorite bloodlines.

Morgan Foundation Bloodlines (described here).

We also have a growing collection of Morgan Horse articles providing history, information and photos documenting the impressive history of America’s oldest horse breed founded in 1789 and it’s long stock horse history and traditions.

New Internet Horse Sale Fraud/Scam
EQUINE LEGAL SOLUTIONS ASSISTS IN REMOVAL OF FAKE HORSE SALE WEBSITES

ELS recently assisted one of our clients in taking down two fraudulent horse sale websites.

SELLER DISCOVERS THEIR HORSES ON TWO OTHER WEBSITES
Our client is in the business of importing and selling quality horses, and has a professionally designed website with beautiful photos, video and detailed descriptions of horses offered for sale as well as horses previously sold. To our client’s horror, they discovered two other websites were advertising some of THEIR horses for sale – using photos, videos and content stolen directly from their website. One of the sites even copied our client’s bio, complete with photos of our client and their personal horse!

CUSTOMERS QUESTION REAL SELLER’S INTEGRITY
Several of our client’s customers started noticing the same horses for sale at lower prices on the scammers’ websites. These clients contacted our clients and questioned our client’s integrity – a very distressing situation for our client.

CUSTOMER CONTACTS WRONG WEBSITE
One of our client’s customers tried to purchase a horse listed for sale on our client’s website. The customer emailed who they THOUGHT was our client to complete the purchase. But they mistakenly contacted one of the fraudulent sites instead! The scammer quickly replied, convinced the customer they were our client’s agent, and gave the customer instructions to wire the payment to a different bank. Unknowingly, the customer contacted her bank to wire the funds to complete the sale.

In Memoriam
Jack Brainard
8/12/1921 - 11/24/2021
“Jack Brainard passed peacefully with his wife Kathy at his side last night. The world will be a little less bright for those of us who knew, admired, respected and loved Jack.

How can one person acknowledge another’s contribution to their personal life and the lives of so many others across the country and across the world? Jack Brainard was influential in the lives of his many students, horse trainers, friends, family, equine associates and most importantly the lives of the many horses whose he touched either through his personal training or his help through instruction to their owners or riders.
Jack loved to help others and he did so as often as the opportunity presented itself.
Jack will be with all of us every time we swing a leg over a horse.

His words will always be there:
“The secret to horsemanship is to show a horse how and when and where to place his feet”

Jack, we are confident that your discomfort is over. We know that you have no fear of what lays ahead, for your faith and love for our Lord is strong, and remains a guide for all of your family, friends and loved ones.

We know that the world is a better place from you having been here.
We love you Jack.
You are a legend.
You will always be our hero”.
