From Your Board Of Directors

From The President

Hi everyone!

We had a great Award Banquet. Thank you to all who attended. I have attempted to include the key information from the event in this newsletter. Patricia Carlson and Tammy Boyer did a great job putting on this event.

Congratulations to all the High Point Award winners and a huge thank you to those who have served on our Board as well as to those who will represent us in the year ahead.

I wish everyone a wonderful holiday season! And for the new year, Health, Wealth, and Happiness! And for the world, a special wish for peace and goodwill.

See you all next year!

Gay Adams, Acting MHAO President

MHAO Board Meeting Minutes

Click here to read a draft of the minutes from the General Membership Meeting held on 11/12/2023.

The January meeting date has not yet been set. This meeting will be for the Board to set our budget and outline our plans for the year.

Thank You To Two Retiring Board Members

Doana Anderson

Doana has served as our Membership Chair for a number of years now. Her contributions include the maintenance of our membership database, a mechanized membership renewal system, one of the best membership directories out there, and voting online. I have always appreciated her different point of view on various things which have helped us to think more critically about things. Doana has agreed to continue to help us with the directory, membership mailings, and our online voting. Thank you Doana. You will be missed on the Board, and much appreciated as a volunteer.

Rhea Turner

Rhea has served the Morgan breed by setting up displays about the Morgan horse at all the open shows she goes to and as our Sunshine Fund person. Her help in sharing information about the Morgan horse is an important part of our promotion efforts. As our Sunshine person, we are so grateful for her dedication. All Board members have sent her requests as any of us became aware of a need for us to reach out to our members. She has had a real challenge in making it to Board meetings, so has asked to step away as a Board member. At the same time she has agreed to continue in serving in these same two ways as a volunteer. Thank you so much Rhea! Your help and participation is much appreciated.

Doana & Rhea, we will miss your input and participation on the Board but deeply appreciate your willingness to continue to contribute to the club. Both Doana & Rhea will receive a plaque acknowledging their time on the Board and thanking them for their service to MHAO.

General Membership Meeting

Some pictures from the Award Banquet held at the Willamette Heritage Center in Salem OR:

A comment from Liz Goldmann:

Thank you Morgan Horse Association of Oregon for the beautiful turnout blanket. Awards coordinator Erin Silver used a system where points equaled credit toward a Schneider's product of the winner's choice so between Sutton Remembrance GCH, Sutton Terra Cotta, and Sutton Obsidian it was Cinco who scored new winter jammies! Thank you Gay Adams and Tammy Boyer for a fun meeting and barbeque buffet including interesting presentations from Joe Hutchinson of the Salem Fire Department on emergency preparedness and Kecia Nathan of Ansur Saddlery Northwest of their treeless designs. Thanks for your good company driving up and down the Columbia Gorge Dallas McLarney Bolen. It was fun to meet & greet with friends before we all hunker down for the winter. Good job, everyone!

From Gay:

Our thanks to Joe Hutchinson for his presentation on Emergency Preparedness.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the wonderful BBQ lunch from the Sassy Onion provided courtesy of MHAO. Tammy Boyer did a great job on the food selection and the beautiful flowers and centerpieces. All the Board members present took home the flowers to enjoy for awhile. And thank you Patricia Carlson for arranging for our speakers. Tammy and Patricia make a great team. The dessert Silent Auction was a hit as well! Thank you to all who brought goodies to be bid on as well as to the bidders who took them all home.

We also appreciated Dallas Bolen coming and giving us an update on the recent AMHA Board meeting. Our connection to AMHA is very important to us and it was great to see Dallas, too.

It was interesting to learn from Kecia Nathan that Ansur Saddles were originally created for a Morgan horse. They are sturdy but flexible custom made treeless saddles that can be made in all types, styles, and sizes specifically fitted to your horse. For more information you can visit the Ansur website or contact Kecia at (503) 791-7840 or via email at nk670@yahoo.com.

My Thanks To All

During the banquet I was presented with a gift from the Board. We were running late so I did not take time to fully open the gift there. We were getting close to the time when we needed to be out of the space we had leased. Above is a picture of what I was given. I LOVE IT! Thank you so much! During our cold spells I have made good use of the soft and warm scarf and have already worn the necklace several times. It makes me feel very elegant. I keep the decorative dish on my bureau and the necklace is always stored there if I'm not wearing it. Thank you so much for the card and wonderful gifts.

Do You Give Lessons? Are you a trainer?

Are you willing to have people come see your Morgan horses?

Let us help you get the word out!

Looking for people throughout the Western Region!

Only two people have responded to this so far.

I have only heard from two barns. Surely we have more to offer than that to new equine enthusiasts. We would like to have a resource available to refer people to for lessons &/or to see Morgan horses throughout the Northwest, maybe even the Western Region. Please let Gay know if we can give out your name for these purposes. I would like to create a brief summary/sale type spiel for each barn. We can share this information along with any of our promotional material, at promotional events, or even MHAO events. We would also like to post it to our website.

Please notify Gay Adams how you would like to be listed.

MHAO Humanitarian Award

Nominations can be made at any time.

Members of MHAO are dedicated to the health and welfare of animals and members of their communities. Many volunteer and donate generously to various causes. Indeed this organization wouldn’t exist without those who contribute their considerable time and talents. It is not surprising our members would do whatever they could to help others, especially during a time of crisis. It is the intent of the MHAO Humanitarian Award to honor and thank those especially generous members who step forward when they are needed.

Qualifications:

1.Member of MHAO at time of service, or a member of the Morgan community.

2.Nominated by member or non-member

3.Submission of at least one brief written description of the nominee’s exceptional community service and impact.

4.Nominations and essay submissions will be reviewed and nominees contacted before acceptance.

Nominations Are Open Now For The

2024 MHAO Stallion Service Auction

Nominations needed no later than January 31st.

Close date to bid will be in mid-April.

Do you have a stallion you would like to promote? Please consider donating a breeding to the 2024 MHAO Stallion Service Auction. We love supporting our Morgan breeders.

Donations from all locations are welcome. You do not need to be a member of MHAO to donate a breeding.

The close date for our auction will be in mid-April, date yet to be determined. The close date depends on when the March TMH will be out.

Other items and sponsors are also welcome to support our Futurity.

I have received a couple suggestions to change the timing of our auction so that it closes earlier in the year. I will take another look at this for future years seeing where there might be an open spot for us. I will be looking for where we can get our advertising out to maximize the number of breeders we might have and also not be competing with other open auctions. The committee will confer on it and report back to the MHAO Board and MHAO membership.

General News & Information

The AMHA/AMHECT Stallion Service Auction Was A Huge Success!

The auction was a huge WIN-WIN for the Morgan community. The 2023 World Morgan Futurity Stallion Service Auction in partnership with the American Morgan Horse Educational Charitable Trust ended as one of the all-time highest earning auctions since it began.

Over $135,000 was generated for the betterment of our great breed. Thanks to the generous stallion owners and the successful bidders who participated in this winning program, we are able to use more money for promotion, give more money back to the stallion owners, give more money to the winning foals, and award more money to the handlers of those winners.

This year, the Top 5 stallions in the auction will have their resulting get from the service sold eligible to win up to x2 the Auction Bonus. In addition, any World Champion Stallion in the Top 5 will be eligible for an additional multiplier bringing the possible bonus up to $40,000!

This year’s Top Five Stallions include:

1. DRAGONSMEADE AXIOS

2. JUS' SAYIN'

3. MERRIEHILL AFTER HOURS GCH

Cyrus Horse Camp

Central Oregon's Cyrus Horse Camp is a popular spring destination. The trails are rideable very early in the season, with good footing, expansive desert vistas, and warm spring sunshine most of the time. The seasonal wildflowers are a delight.

THE RIDING

The 25-mile Cole Loop endurance trail runs right past the camp and explores the area around Gray Butte and Pine Butte. By connecting the endurance trail with the dirt roads that lace the area, you can create several moderate-length loops, including the Pine Ridge Loop, the Scales Corral Loop, the Skull Hollow Loop, and the Trail Crossing Corral Loop.

In addition, the Warner Loop connects to the Cole Loop for a 12.5-mile ride across sagebrush flats and low hills with panoramic views of Gray Butte, Pine Ridge, Haystack Rock, and Grizzly Mountain.

Several of the trails run past the historic McCoin Orchard, the site of the homestead that Julius and Sarah McCoin established 120 years ago. Their house is long gone, but poplar trees still line the yard and the apple orchard still blooms in the spring and the trees bear tiny fruit in the fall.

All of the trails are on gentle, open terrain and are suitable for trotting, gaiting, and cantering. At several locations along the trails, you’ll find spring-fed water troughs.

THE CAMPING

Cyrus Horse Camp features 9 sites with corrals and parking for two trailers. It has a vault toilet, manure bin, picnic tables, and fire rings.

If you want to do a day ride instead of staying at Cyrus Horse Camp, you can access the various trails from the Skull Hollow Trailhead, Scales Corral, or the Trail Crossing Corral Trailhead.

MORE INFORMATION

Cyrus Horse Camp and its nearby trails are covered in the Gray Butte chapter of Riding Central Oregon Horse Trails, by Kim McCarrel, available at www.nwhorsetrails.com.

Northwest Saddlebred Association Cinic

A Plea From Forever Morgans

Folks, very recently there was a Morgan at Enumclaw auction that we were unable to pull. One of the primary reasons is that we do not have enough approved foster or adoptive homes in that area to be able to regularly and quickly pull Morgans that appear at that auction (and they do).

What we would like to do is to have a campaign to get more foster homes approved ahead of need, preferably ones that can quarantine, but if we can get a reliable quarantine facility there as well ones that can't would work.

So our challenge to you is, if you live in the Northwest within a reasonable distance of Enumclaw, and you've been thinking of fostering or adopting but haven't because it seems most of our horses are on the East Coast, step up! This is the only way we can rescue more Morgans in your area, by planning ahead. If you're interested, email us at ForeverMorgans@hotmail.com, and our applications can be found under Adopt or Foster on our website, www.ForeverMorgans.org.

There was a full house for our Eugene Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue course! We had a great mix of people representing search and rescue, mounted posse, 4-H, fire departments, veterinary staff, equine/animal rescue groups, horse owners and more in attendance. Everyone can learn from this amazing training by Rebecca Gimenez Husted!! If you have missed out, join us in Hood River in April. To see comments about the event, go to the Oregon Horse Council Facebook page: These pictures from the November event will give you an idea of the content. It has classroom learning plus hands on experiences on working with large animals in emergency situations. There are also portions on trailer safety, barn safety, and more. This training is as important for anyone who owns, cares for, or transports horses or other large animals as it is for first responders and for large animal Vets and their staff. The training does count toward continuing education requirements for Vets.

Promising to be one of the Hallmark’s most anticipated releases of the season, “A Blacksmith for Christmas” is sure to be an instant holiday classic among middle-aged moms hiding out from their children everywhere.

Starring Vanessa Veda (the “Who Dat?” franchise, “The D-List”), and Scott Peggy (“Punch-able Chin”), the film will premiere the week before Christmas as part of the network’s annual Countdown to Christmas lineup.

I admit I'm a sucker for Hallmark Christmas movies, even if I already know the plot. I will be watching for this one. Besides, I like being included in the category of "middle aged mom". Gay Adams

In Memoriam

Sandra Stearns

November 7, 1969 -

November 22, 2023

AMHA mourns the loss of our dear member Sandra Lynn (Felker) Stearns. Sandy, age 54, passed away peacefully to be with the Lord, with her husband Keaton by her side, on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, in Holland, Michigan.

Together, she and Keaton raised championship Morgan horses under the "KSS" prefix. She will be most remembered for her love of Morgan horses that was instilled in her at a young age by her mother and her first horse, Christy. Sandy committed much time to the Michigan Justin Morgan Horse Association (MJMHA) and Michigan Morgan Horse Breeders Futurity (MMHBF) organizations. Stepping up on board for MJMHA, managing their Spring Classic horse show for many years, then passing on the reins to work on MMHBF horse shows. As past secretary and vice president, Sandra worked over 15 years for MMHBF.

A funeral service celebrating Sandra’s life was held on Thursday, November 30, at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial & Cremation Services in Portage, Michigan.
