From Your Board Of Directors
|
Greetings to all-
The past two weeks have given us chilly days but lots of sun and blue skies. That is great weather to go out and enjoy, get a little Vitamin D and enjoy some quality time with your horses. At the time I am writing this, we are back into our rainy forecast with a possibility of snow. Just when you think that maybe, just maybe, Spring is going to come a little early, Mother Nature has different plans. Spring will be here before we know it. To help you all get a little excited about Spring, there are two events that your MHAO board has been working on that will be occurring in the next few months.
| |
|
|
The first is our Stallion Service Auction (SSA) which will begin accepting bids in Feburary.. Currently there are 18 stallions being offered with nominations open for additional stallions. The proceeds of the stallion auction supports the MHAO Breeders Cup Futurity. The SSA is a way to publicize breeders and offer access to high quality Morgans. To view the current stallions in the auction, please go to the MHAO website, go to the “programs” tab and select the stallion service auction. You will find a wonderful selection of stallions that are superb representations of the Morgan breed. If you are looking to breed your mare, here’s an opportunity to choose from a varied selection of stallions while helping out MHAO. On line bidding will conclude on April 19th at 3:00 pm. For further information, please contact Gay Adams at 503-936-4276.
The second event will be our Spring Clinic and General Membership meeting. MHAO will be offering a clinic centered around Western Dressage to be held at the Silver Tail Farm in Creswell OR. Our clinician for the event will be Deborah Spence. This year, our program chair has created a different approach to how we have done the clinics in the past. Patricia Carlson, program chair, has created an alliance with Silver Tail Farm and Deborah Spence to offer a combination show and clinic. The show is sponsored by Silver Tail Farm and will be judged by Ms. Spence on Saturday, April 12th. The following day, MHAO will be sponsoring a clinic on Western Dressage with Ms. Spence as the clinician. Here is an opportunity to show, ride and participate in a clinic under one judge! You can ride in one or both events. What an invaluable opportunity that is being presented to you! For more information, please contact Patricia Carlson at 503-851-1950.
As I mentioned, the annual spring membership meeting will be held on Sunday, April 13th during the lunch break at the clinic. More information regarding the meeting will follow. If you have any questions or have a topic you want to discuss at the membership meeting, please contact Kathy at 503-391-9047.
In closing, let me also remind you to re-new your membership if you haven’t done so already . It just won’t be the same without you!
Happy Valentine’s Day all-
Until next month-

If you have not renewed yet, please do. If you know someone who owns a Morgan horse but is not a current member, please ask them to join. We are stronger together. The main mission of MHAO is the preservation and promotion of this wonderful breed. We can't do it without members. MHAO offers a full array of programs for our members as highlighted in this newsletter and on our website - www.morganhorseoregon.com. The website will be updated this month. Your voice is very important to our success. We need you as a member in order to remain a viable and highly valued organization able to serve you.
Individual Membership - $30 (gives you 1 vote)
Family Membership - $35 (gives you 2 votes)
Another way you can help: if an MHAO member sells a Morgan horse to a first time Morgan owner, that new owner can have a free MHAO membership in the year of purchase. Just fill out a membership form with them and send it to Karen Breckenridge as outlined on the form. Where it asks for payment information write "First Time Morgan Owner", and who the horse was purchased from. It will be our job to earn their paid membership thereafter. Send me their email address so I can add them to our distribution list for the Stable Sheet - send to sunstonemorgans@comcast.net

Here Is What Is New!
- Points earned at the Oregon Morgan Classic count double!
- There is a new category for Half Morgans for all disciplines. You need to be able to document the horse's Morgan ancestry.
- Remember, all point submissions need to be sent in by US Mail. It's too easy for email submissions to be lost or not come thru.
- Although not new, don't forget about our Virtual Show category.
Basically every type of competition out there is covered by this program. Let us know if we missed one. But you need to be a member of MHAO to be eligible, and you need to turn in your points.
Here is the scoop on our program and how it works. Click here to download a Point Submission Form. Print several so you have them on hand.

Whether You Show or Compete, or Not - We Have Two Programs That Apply To All Morgan Owners
Half Morgans Are Eligible
| |
Open Incentive Reimbursement Program
You can receive up to $30 per membership as reimbursement for your participation in various types of events with your Morgan horse $10 per event, a to a maximum of $30 per year). MHAO events are excluded where an MHAO discount is usually offered. See the flyer below for more information. This program makes membership in MHAO very reasonable. We thank you for getting your Morgan horse out in front of other people. There is no better way for people to be introduced to our wonderful breed. Thank you!
For questions on the program, contact Sandi Humphfres at firemed13@yahoo.com.
For questions about your reimbursement contact Karen Breckenridge at wylieriley@aol.com.
| |
The MHAO Ride/Drive Program
|
This program is about tracking your time with your Morgan horse. Earn patch awards that you can display. Historically, when seen, these patches make people ask about your horse. This is another way our members can draw interest to our breed. The only exception to your time counted is your actual competition time in front of a judge at a Morgan horse show. Your warm up and practice time counts, all your time at an open show or any other place or event counts, all your time at home or on the trail all counts. It is all between you and your Morgan horse. Patches and awards will be handed out at the annual Award Banquet.
Click here to download detailed information on the program, an enrollment form, and a tracking sheet. All members should enroll in this program. There is a one time enrollment fee that remains active for the life of your membership in MHAO. That fee helps us to cover the cost of our awards and patches.
If you have questions or need assistance, contact Sandi Humphfres at firemed13@yahoo.com.

Do you know a Morgan person who should receive recognition for their actions this year? Nominate them for the MHAO Humanitarian Award. The recipient will be honored at the Oregon Morgan Classic
Deadline for nomination is May 15th
| |
|
Wording on the plaque will be adjusted to reflect the reason they will receive this award.

It is not surprising our members would do whatever they could to help others, especially during a time of crisis. It is the intent of the MHAO Humanitarian Award to honor and thank those especially generous members who step forward when they are needed.
Qualifications:
1.Member of MHAO at time of service, or a member of the Morgan community.
2.Nominated by member or non-member
3.Submission of at least one brief written description of the nominee’s exceptional community service and impact.

US Equestrian to Aid Recovery Efforts in California
by US Equestrian Communications Department | Jan 10, 2025, 2:00 PM
| |
|
Lexington, Ky. - In the wake of the devastating LA fires, USEF is working closely with relief organizations in the area to provide much needed funds and aid to support rescue and recovery efforts. If you are interested in joining our efforts, please donate here. 100% of your donation goes to supporting emergency relief efforts now and in the future.
When natural disasters, like the current wildfires in California, occur, US Equestrian connects as soon as possible with professionals and non-profit organizations that are aiding the horses and the equestrian community in the local area to provide access to needed funds.
Developed in 2005 during the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund helps ensure horses’ safety and well-being. Since its inception, the fund has distributed more than $700,000 to help with disaster recovery and preparedness for horses including but not limited to the impacts of hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, blizzards, and fires.
Money donated to the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund is dedicated for the specific purpose of helping in moments of need. In 2024, US Equestrian awarded grants to organizations aiding the equestrian populations following three separate natural disasters (Texas wildfires, California wildfires, and Hurricane Helene).
If you wish to donate, you can visit our website at https://www.usef.org/donate and choose the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund in the dropdown menu.

Bryan Blatt - Westwind Morgans
|
For those following this case - my current understanding is:
Too much misinformation was being shared on social media so the "Save Westwind Morgans" page was taken down. Until the court concludes the neglect case there is nothing the public can do. If the public does need to be informed and thus step up, the page will be created again.
When there is a court case pending regarding neglect, the herd is moved and taken care of by assignment of the court, and keeping the location of the herd secret is the normal procedure. Bryan is suing to try to get his herd back.
Those who had donated funds to help save Westwind Morgans had them returned. Many are still willing to help when and where it is needed - its just we aren't to that point yet.
As to the confusion about the condition of the herd - some are quite fat, some are quite thin; which is why many had to be euthanized prior to the 'total of 87' being reached. There are still some in very rough shape, but many that are doing okay.
Once the court case has progressed, more information will be shared and the Facebook page will open back up.

Report From The US Equestrian Federation On The National Breed and Discipline Affiliate Summit Held In December
|
On December 2 – 3, the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) hosted the 2024 National Breed and Discipline Affiliate Summit to review and discuss opportunities to work more closely together to achieve mutual goals and better understand how USEF can be a partner to their success. Educational presentations and open dialogue focused on the importance of working collaboratively to grow and protect the respective organizations, horses, and the equestrian industry.
“This two-day summit provided a great opportunity to take a deeper dive into some of the key reasons why it is important for USEF and Affiliates to work closely together, especially in the challenging environment we all face as an industry,” said Bill Moroney, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of US Equestrian. “We collectively left with a better understanding of what it will take to ensure a united and strong future for our respective organizations, members, breeds, and disciplines.”

Winter Care and Feeding Tips
|
Since we still have several weeks of winter weather to get through it's a good time to check in with your horses and make sure they are handling all that comes with the season. With many areas of the U.S. battling consistently cold temperatures and windy, wet, snowy weather, these conditions affect how you care for and feed your horses. We even had snow storms in the southern states. Talk about unexpected weather! Here are some helpful tips to keep your horses thriving:
Keep your horses nourished and warm
- Be vigilant how you store your hay and keep it dry. Also double check that you have an adequate supply to get through the rest of the winter.
- Do a body score check, get hands-on, through fur, to make sure horses are not too heavy or lean. Be sure to remove blankets and monitor body scores often.
- Evaluate the diet to see if you need to make any adjustments.
- Feed more hay as temperatures drop—hay can help horses stay warmer.
- When it snows, be sure hay and water sources don’t get buried.
- Don’t let water sources freeze or become too cold. Dehydration and impactions are a top cause of winter colic.
Use high fiber options to supplement limited or poor hay quality
Chopped hay— provides longer fiber length and is conveniently packaged.
-
Forage cubes— feed as-is or soaked to help senior horses and increase hydration.
- Pelleted hay— an easy-to-use/chew hay alternative; also seek longer stemmed sources if possible.
- Shredded beet pulp— high fiber, higher calorie, low starch and sugar; can be fed as-is or soaked.
- Complete feeds— beet pulp-based feeds can be the sole ration of the diet for your horses, providing fiber, calories and balanced nutrients.

Interesting Facts About Horses
- The fastest recorded sprinting speed of a horse is 55 mph. This was achieved by a horse named Winning Brew in 2008 over a short distance at Penn National Race Course in Grantville, PA.
- Horses' teeth grow throughout their lives. Unlike humans, a horse's teeth never stop growing. As a result, horses may need regular dental care to ensure their teeth are healthy and aligned, as overgrown teeth can lead to discomfort and difficulty eating.
- Horses are social animals. They thrive in herds and build strong bonds with other horses and even other animals like goats or dogs. Horses rely on these social bonds for safety and emotional well-being, often forming lifelong connections within their herds.
- A horse’s teeth take up more space in its head than its brain. Adult horses have between 36 and 44 teeth, which continue to grow throughout their lives to compensate for wear from chewing tough plant material.
- Horses are great swimmers. While they aren’t aquatic animals, horses can naturally swim and often paddle with powerful strides to cross rivers or lakes. In fact, they are actually very competent swimmers, due to their huge lungs, which enables them to naturally float.
- Horses have unique whorls in their coat. Just like human fingerprints, the patterns of hair whorls on a horse’s body are unique to each individual and are sometimes used for identification.

Budweiser Clydesdales & the Super Bowl: Heart, Hooves & History
|
Few images in American advertising are as instantly recognizable as the towering, majestic Budweiser Clydesdales. Click here to read more about them, and get a first look at this year's Super Bowl Ad.
Why the Budweiser Clydesdales Still Matter in Today’s Changing Media Landscape
In an era dominated by TikTok trends and short-form content, one might wonder if the Budweiser Clydesdales’ traditional storytelling approach still holds weight. The answer? Absolutely. If anything, their enduring appeal proves that in a world of fleeting digital distractions, powerful narratives still win the day.
Even as Budweiser experiments with modern marketing tactics, the Clydesdales remain at the core of its brand identity. Their ability to adapt while maintaining their emotional core makes them one of the most successful advertising campaigns in history.

USDA Announces HPA Final Rule Postponement
|
The American Horse Council (AHC) provides the following announcement issued by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS) regarding a 60-day delay for the implementation of the Horse Protection Act’s Final Rule.
On January 24, 2025, USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) will temporarily postpone its final rule to amend the Horse Protection Act (HPA) regulations for 60 days from February 1, 2025, to April 2, 2025. APHIS published the final rule (89 FR 39194-39251) amending the horse protection regulations to provide, among other provisions, that the agency will screen, train, and authorize qualified persons for appointment by the management of any horse show, horse exhibition, or horse sale or auction to detect and diagnose soring at such events for the purposes of enforcing the HPA.
With the exception of § 11.19, which went into effect on June 7, 2024, and authorized the training of horse protection inspectors, the remainder of the rule was scheduled to go into effect on February 1, 2025.
APHIS will issue guidance to stakeholders for the upcoming horseshow season in light of the postponement of the new rule.

What is School of Ranch?
School of Ranch is a Central Oregon based 501c3 nonprofit. We hire experienced locals to teach practical and artisan skills, live and in person. Beyond teaching skills and creating paying gigs, we help strengthen our community by bringing people together in person and helping them find common ground, the basis for a strong community.
| |
From Mark Gross - School Of Ranch Founder
|
At the conclusion of a recent workshop, the leader suggested a gratitude circle. One participant shared their belief in God—and how wrong they believe atheists are. Something like this had never happened at a workshop of ours, and at that moment, I wasn't sure how to react, or whether I should. On reflection, I think I should have, and here’s what I might have said:
There may be atheists in this circle who, like all of us, just spent the last three hours marveling at the wonders of nature. We shared that experience, and were connected by it. But when we declare at the end that those marvels prove others are wrong for what they believe, we brake the bond we just built.
School of Ranch's mission is to bring people together across differences in politics, age, background and beliefs. Participation affirms, in a way, the right of others to think differently and still be a part of the same community. This is what makes School of Ranch special, and, ultimately, is also what truly makes America great: the recognition that the price of our own freedom is that we must let others be free too—even when we think they’re wrong. Thank you all for participating in School of Ranch and giving life to this essential truth.
Speaking of truth...we have some awesome new stuff for you, and that's a fact! The most exciting thing to me, being a geek, is the introduction of AI-based planning tools I developed into our workshops, starting with our Solar Systems, Weed Management, and Irrigation workshops. Participants will go home with a custom plan that addresses their specific needs. All this and the kickoff of our 'Tis in Season series with Locavore, pelvic health, trailer towing...omg, Mark, let the people get to the good stuff! 🙂
