From Your Board Of Directors
Acting President's Message from Gay Adams

Hi everyone,

We hope you had a wonderful holiday season! Now it is time for your Board to welcome its new Board members and to roll up our sleeves and get to work on the year ahead.

The Board will have its first meeting of the year on January 18th. During that meeting we will set our plans and our budget. Watch for future announcements for our Spring Clinic in March or April. We will circulate information on the date, subject, clinician, pricing, and location as soon as it is available.
Meantime:
  • Nominations are open for stallions and other items to our Stallion Service Auction. If you own a stallion or would like to support our efforts, take a look at the information in this newsletter and on our website to see the benefits we offer to the stallion owner/donor. We will open up our stallion pages on January 15th. Nominations will close on February 28th. Online bidding will be available March 1st, and the auction will close on April 22nd at 3pm Pacific Time.
  • We are also working on a new member directory and processing our membership renewals. Please get your renewals in now! We need your support, and we want to be sure to list you in the directory! New members, whether residing in Oregon or not, are always welcome! The directory will be distributed via email this year as a full size (8.5"x11") PDF booklet. You can print a copy if you like; or if you can't, call us to request a printed copy. Just let Doana Anderson know.
  • Futurity renewals are another thing to take care of in the early part of the year. They are due by March 31st. Renewal requests will go out in late February or early March via email.
  • We will likely have a General Membership meeting at the Spring clinic. We would love to see you there! It is a great place to network, see valued friends, learn about the programs MHAO offers, and get to know your Board. We like getting to know you, too! More information will follow.

We may have more to tell you about after our meeting! Our goal is to make 2023 a very fun year for you and your club. Happy New Year!

Gay Adams, Acting MHAO President
(503) 936-4276, sunstonemorgans@comcast.net
Your Board of Directors for 2023:
Thank you to everyone who has stepped forward to be a leader in 2023 for MHAO.

We were unable to find a person willing to serve as our President for 2023 out of the recipients of write-in votes. So Gay Adams has agreed to step in as Acting President until a replacement can be found. Per our By-laws, no officer can hold more than one officer position, so we are looking for a stand-in as Secretary. More information will be provided as we move forward. For now, here is your current slate of Officers and Directors:

Acting President: Gay Adams
Vice President: Julie Nygaard
Secretary: TBD
Treasurer: Karen Breckenridge

Youth Director: Kyndle Cummins

Directors:

Tammy Boyer*
Kim Moore*

Doana Anderson
Sandi Humphfres

Welcome to our newest Board members*. And thank you to our incumbent Board Members who are staying on. To all of you, your support means a lot to all the members of MHAO. Without you we would not have a functioning club. Contact information will follow along with committee assignments, and we will start working on updating our website..

Our online voting system appears to be a success! This year we had a record amount of voters in our election. Thank you! We will do all we can to make it always an easy process for you.

The first meeting for the new Board typically takes place in mid-January. The first meeting is usually a long one because that is when we determine our budget and direction for the year. Let Gay Adams know before January 15th if you want any of your ideas included in that discussion. You can send an email to her at sunstonemorgans@comcast.net or call her at (503) 936-4276. We welcome your input and involvement.

Regular Board meetings are open to the membership. All you need to do is let us know you would like to attend so we can let you know how to join us, and keep you in the loop on any schedule changes.

From the Oregon Horse Council
Are you interested in having an impact on the Equine Industry in Oregon?
The Oregon Horse Council was established in 2009 and has worked hard for Oregon's equine industry in many ways since - we are now searching for more enthusiastic people to join us in this important work!
This valuable organization is overseen by a dedicated and amazing group of up to 11 board members who represent various businesses, disciplines, and regions of the state. Each board member has a 3 year term and they are staggered so that 3 board members roll off each year.

We are looking for new board members to join our team! This is an exciting time for the Oregon Horse Council as we come out of COVID and re-vision our future, programs, legislative efforts, membership, and overall plans.
The board meets via conference call monthly and in person once per year (dates and times determined by the board). The board works at a higher level than many organizations as there is staff to carry out the day-to-day tasks. The board's focus is deciding the future of the organization and does not do a large amount of hands-on work in between meetings. All applicants must be current OHC members (memberships start at only $50 a year!).
If you are interested, please see the link below. Please contact any of our current board members or our office with any questions at 971-224-5879 or Brandi@OregonHorseCouncil.com

Figure's Memorial Stone
Posted on Facebook by Tamarack Hill Farm

Some equine legends happen in an instant, win the big prize, achieve instant glory. Other legends build slowly, to the point that it isn’t possible to tell when the horse went from obscure, to known, to widely known, to the point of fame.
When the small bay stallion, Figure, later to become known as Justin Morgan, died 201 years ago, in 1821, on a remote farm in Chelsea, Vermont, I am sure that it went unnoticed and unremarked except in the small local area where he had stood at stud for so many years. Randolph, Tunbridge, Chelsea, Strafford, like the nearer ripples to the point where a thrown stone plunges into a pond.

Figure was only a local phenomenon at first. What made the legend grow didn’t have to do with how fast he could trot, or how heavy a log he could pull. He founded America’s first native horse breed because, as the saying goes, he bred true.

What Figure had, so many years ago, is what the hard-scrabble pioneers needed so badly to help them live in a hard country of long winters, steep hills, unrelenting physical labor, hardly any money. If Figure was a tough, sound, scrappy, thrifty little stallion, able to work endless hours during the week, and outrun or out-trot other horses on weekends, his owners would have gotten local farmers to breed some mares to him. Normally, that would have been the end of the story.

To breed true, though, is another story altogether, because Figure’s foals looked like him, were tough and sound the way he was, had the willingness to work and not get sour, worn down or sulky, so locals bred to Figure’s sons, and those foals had the same needed traits, and so did the next generation of foals, and the next.

Breeders started to cross Morgans to Morgans, to intensify the similarities, and by the time, say, that Figure had been dead for fifty years, the 1870s, the term “Morgan horse” had become so familiar that it must have seemed that the legend had always been a legend.

Which is why Morgan lovers need to see where he died 200 years ago, still totally remote, still so far off the beaten path that almost nobody ever sees the spot where they think he was buried. The snow sifts down and buries the stone each winter. You could walk by on snowshoes and never have any idea that somewhere within yards of where you pass Figure died at the age of 32.

His legend back then hadn’t been set in stone. It came about gradually, as years went by, because he had living sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters, and day after day, year after year, those “Morgan horses” got harnessed each morning and went out onto those rough and hilly farms and worked for hours, stayed sound and game, so that when it came time for some local farmer to breed a mare, the stallion to breed to would have had to be a Morgan.

Figure’s stone is now the most remote part of his legend.

Passed on by Cynthia Bayles. Thank you Cynthia!
Information About EHV From Platinum Performance
New Article:
EQUINE HERPESVIRUS (EHV-1)
GOING VIRAL
Due to national concerns about this virus, and the impact on equine activities, an article from Platinum Performance was recently circulated covering: understanding the virus; slowing the spread; establishing biosecurity protocols; treatment protocols; risk factors; and, preventative measures.    Important information for all equestrians to know.

A part of the article:

EHV-1: FAQS
What is Equine Herpes Virus?
Equine Herpes Virus-1 (EHV-1) is a virus that is present in the environment and found in most horses all over the world. Horses are typically exposed to the virus at a young age with no serious side effects.
What is Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy (EHM)?
EHM is the neurological disease syndrome caused by the EHV-1. In this syndrome, the EHV-1 virus damages blood vessels in the brain and spinal cord causing the various neurologic clinical signs.
What are EHM Clinical Signs?
  • Fever
  • Nasal discharge
  • Limb edema
  • Incoordination
  • Hind-quarter weakness
  • Recumbence
  • Lethargy
  • Urine dribbling
  • Diminished tail tone
How soon after exposure can a horse show clinical signs of disease?
The EHV-1 incubation period is defined as the period of time from exposure of the horse to the virus, to the time the horse displays clinical signs of disease. The incubation period for EHM is typically from 2-10 days but may be as short as 24 hours or as long as 14 days. The clinical sign of fever typically precedes respiratory signs and limb edema. Neurologic signs may appear suddenly, progress rapidly and peak in intensity within 24-48 hours from the onset of neurologic signs.
What is the likelihood that a EHV-1/EHM exposed horse will become ill and result in death?
There is little published field data regarding the incidence of illness and death in exposed horses. Studies indicate that:
  • 80% of infected horses will display a fever,
  • 30-35% of infected horses will develop neurologic signs; and
  • 5-15% of infected horses will die or be euthanized.

National Day of the Horse seems to be the proper day to honor the finest, most perfect, kind and beautiful horse I've ever known. I am devastated by the loss of my sweet Smooch this year.

Thankfully we have some of his wonderful children, and frozen semen, but without his grand presence my barn feels empty. I am beyond grateful to have had this magnificent stallion in my life.

Trygger,

To some you were just a horse. To me you were so much more than that. You were my best friend, my wings, and my shoulder to cry on.

You gave me my wings. I would have never became the rider I am today without you.
I remember every ride on you, starting from being nervous and having high anxiety and a melt down at Monroe fairgrounds in the middle of the arena for C-Fair (our first official show together) because I was nervous about riding in that arena. Meanwhile you sat there like ”Girl come on, I have done this over and over “ And then when I gathered my self, you took me around that arena like it was nothing …. helping me become worry free.

You took me as a nervous, and stressed rider to Oklahoma. As scared as I was you were excited… knew your job and nailed it pretty darn well. We may not have gotten every first place ribbon, but a successful ride with you was a first place in my heart. And then there was the time I went to do a pattern at OKC and you saw yourself on the big screen and decided that was pretty cool, and just needed to stop and check out how handsome you were.

You took me in as a scared rider and made me confident. You helped me accomplish some goals that if you asked me in 2018 if I would ever do… I would have looked at you and told you that you were crazy.

Trygger, you are my heart horse, and will forever remain that. Nobody will ever be able to replace you; or pull off the quick bite trick, or the trailer trick you only pulled with me?!!

You were there for me thru every bad day or every good day. When life wasn’t going as planned I would just go out and clean your stall, or just go out there to hang out with you and talk because you truly were my best friend. You were always there for me and could always put a smile on my face. Just for that you deserve the world.

When I was in the hospital, so was Trygger. As hard of a time I was having, along with the things I had to get done… my whole motivation was I need to get out and be with my horse and see him… and that if Trygger could go thru what he did, then I will get thru what I’m going thru. All that mattered was you.

The thought of ever losing you had never gone thru my mind, because you're Trygger and you needed to live forever.

I am also so very thankful that Trygger became such a many discipline horse for me. He just went along with learning western from being a mostly hunt seat horse, and then took on the challenge of dressage with me, and teaching me all the stuff I know.

I’m also grateful that you were such a great horse that we could trust to put any young person or even someone who’s never ridden horses before on your back. You taught them and took them around like it was nothing.

I will forever be grateful that I was one of your many chosen girls.

Thank you for being my best friend, my shoulder to cry on, my motivation, my wings, and most importantly my horse.

I love you forever Trygger.
