Happy New Year to you all!
I hope that you all had a joyous holiday and are looking forward to the New Year. Its the time of the year when we start new, sit down, make plans, and pursue goals . This is true for your MHAO board, too. We will begin our 2026 year with our first board meeting on Saturday, Jan. 17th at 12:00 noon at the Creekside Golf Club in Salem, OR and begin to make plans for 2026. Normally our board meetings take place on the third Wednesday of each month (schedule is subject to change) and are in a conference call format. For our first meeting of the year, we have decided that we will be meeting in person to discuss program plans for 2026.
On occasions such as the Spring Clinic and Fall Award Banquet, we hold General Membership meetings in-person. At those meetings we invite all MHAO members to join us. Please note that all Board meetings, both conference call and in-person, are open to the general membership to attend. For future reference, to access the conference calls, simply dial 267-807-9601 with the ID number 149-352-688. Just let me know you are coming. We strive to be transparent and keep the membership informed and involved in the clubs plans. As I have mentioned before, the Board is here to serve the membership. This is your club! Please feel free to reach out to me or any of the Board members if you have questions, concerns or ideas.
If you have not renewed your membership yet, I ask that you please kindly do so now. Our membership dues are the same as they have been in the past year and with your membership, you have access to the programs that are only available to you as our member.
I look forward to the year ahead as your President. There are always challenges and uncertainty in the future, but I am confident that we can succeed and have a great year.

There was no meeting in December. We hope you had a wonderful holiday season!
Our first meeting in January will be in person, January 17th at noon at the Creekside Golf Course in Salem. It will be a long meeting to set our budget for the year as well as our goals for each committee. If you have any ideas you would like to share, please contact Kathy Christensen at mikekak33@gmail.com.

The Morgan Horse Association of Oregon needs your membership. We need your voice and your ideas. We represent the Morgan community in our State. Over the last decade, many Morgan clubs have disappeared. We are one of only two that are left in the US portion of our Western Region. That is scary. It is just the Morgan Horse Association of Oregon (MHAO) and the Morgan Horse Club of Washington State (MHCWS). Both organizations are doing all they can to support one another.
Clubs are the hub of the Morgan community and responsible for organized promotion of our breed. Without clubs, our wonderful breed is at risk of disappearing in our area. Clubs work to make the Morgan horse visible in our market, and to offer education and services that their members are interested in. But a club cannot survive without members. Below is a list of what MHAO offers you.
Help us support you and our wonderful breed. Join MHAO!

Do you have something for sale? I'm sure you do! People are always looking for something or have something they would like to sell. From horses to tack to property, vehicles, trailers, training, lessons, stallions standing, trails to ride on, other services or products. Put your classified ad in the Stable Sheet. Members can sell anything here. Also post it on the MHAO Facebook page between the 1st and 5th of each month.
YOUR CLASSIFIED LISTING IS FREE!!
I'll even include pictures. Larger ads can be put into the main part of the Stable Sheet newsletter for a modest fee. Do you put on events or clinics? Summer Camps? Let us help you get the word out.
I have created a separate section of this newsletter for classified ads. Join me as I endeavor to make it the "go to" place to share with those looking for horses or horse related items in this area. If you give lessons or sell something on an ongoing basis, why not put it here and on our website? Your listing is free! Do you stand a stallion? Offer training or give lessons?
Another idea, put your business card in the Stable Sheet! It only costs you $10 per year, and it helps us cover the cost of producing this newsletter. We need your support.

New Group Formed In an Effort To Bring Back the BC Morgan Horse Show
There is some work going on by the Cascadia Morgan Horse Alliance puttting on events to raise funds toward bringing back the BC show. I see them on Facebook and Instagram, but could not find a webpage. On Facebook they say their purpose is: Promoting the breed through education, shows, and events that connect our Morgan community. I recommend we all support them in any way we can. They are conducting fund raising events in Washington State. You can see information on those events on the Facebook page for the Morgan Horse Club of Washington State. You can also contact Denise Lester for more information: dnn366@gmail.com, (425) 280-8038.

Choices You Can Make For Competing In 2026
| |
From Allison Deardorff and Deardorff Stable LLC
26 choices you can make in 2026 to become a stronger rider and smarter competitor.
1. Ride with intention, not habit.
2. Study the best instead of guessing.
3. Show up early. Prepared riders win first.
4. Listen more than you defend.
5. Film your rides. The camera doesn’t lie.
6. Revisit the basics. They matter most.
7. Stop blaming your horse. Own the ride.
8. Ride the horse you have today.
9. Get stronger out of the saddle.
10. Choose clarity over noise.
11. Protect your mindset.
12. Coach yourself with discipline and belief.
13. Ride through discomfort. That’s where growth lives.
14. Study the judge’s perspective.
15. Ride for the horse, not the crowd.
16. Respect the learning curve.
17. Control your reactions. Your horse feels them.
18. Choose your barn energy wisely.
19. Learn the rulebook.
20. Clean up sloppy habits.
21. Ride the entire class. Every pass counts.
22. Treat horse shows like finals.
23. Manage your nerves before they manage you.
24. Stay gracious. Win or lose.
25. Ask better questions.
26. Believe you can win. Quiet confidence changes everything.
Make these choices consistently, and 2026 won’t just change how you ride.
It’ll change who you become in the ring.
| | Daryl Hopson At Equestfest and the Tournament of Roses Parade | | |
It was an honor once again to travel south and help Michele Macfarlane of Scripps Miramar Ranch with Equestfest and the Tournament of Roses Parade. This year’s parade entry with a freshly restored horse drawn fire pumper wagon built in 1870. The rolling weight of this vehicle is 6,000# and historically driven three-abreast. Expertly driven by Michele Macfarlane herself, the horses included two full brothers, Captain and Donald, driven on the outside and four-year-old Barry driven in the middle. All three horses are warmblood crosses that were purchased from Daryl Hopson of Walla Walla, WA.
Five spotted American Saddlebred horses followed the fire pumper, each authentically dressed in fire attire period-appropriate for that time. The riders included tv personality Carson Kressley and Morgan/Saddlebred trainers Eric Antman, Austin Eversman, Cierra Holtz and Julie Robinson.
Equestfest is the pre-parade function held for all equestrian units. A second vehicle was pulled by the same team to bring in the parade President and court and provide welcoming comments to the attendees. With less than 20 original vehicles surviving from the London Road Car Company, this omnibus also has been newly restored and made it’s west coast debut.
Fresh local live swags and red carnations from South America adorned each vehicle during their presentations. It was a labor of love for all involved, but the turnout was impeccable and represented equine industry magnificently on a national stage.

What does 2026 .... the Year of the Horse ...mean for us?
Not in a loud, charging, “run faster, do more” way.
But in a deeply embodied, truth-telling way.
The Horse, symbolically, is about:
freedom
movement
instinct
truth
nervous system wisdom
connection over control
And 2026 asks us something very simple ..... and very uncomfortable:
Are you living in alignment with yourself,
or are you still trying to outrun something?
The Year of the Horse doesn’t reward force.
It responds to authenticity.
It asks:
Are you listening to your body or overriding it?
Are you choosing paths because they’re expected ....or because they feel right?
Are you moving with purpose… or just staying busy to avoid feeling?
For many of us (especially horse people), 2026 will be about coming back into the body.
Less dissociation.
Less pushing through.
More noticing.
Horses don’t rush for approval.
They move when it makes sense.
They stop when it doesn’t.
They don’t explain themselves.
That’s the energy.
2026 supports:
boundaries without guilt
rest without justification
saying “not today” and trusting it
choosing safety over spectacle
partnership over power
It’s a year where truth shows up quickly.
Misalignment feels louder.
And intuition gets harder to ignore.
If something isn’t right , you’ll feel it.
If something is right, your body will soften into it.
For horse owners, riders, helpers, carers, healers, humans: 2026 isn’t about doing more.
It’s about moving honestly.
With yourself.
With others.
With the lives we’re responsible for.
The Horse doesn’t ask you to be perfect.
It asks you to be present.
And that… might be the bravest thing of all.

To my horse...
Thank you for meeting me where I was, for your patience when I was learning, and for carrying more than just my weight.
You taught me to breathe, to slow down, and to trust softness over force.
You held space for every version of me without asking for explanations.
My life is better because of you.
Thank you for being my horse.
This is the value of a horse that cannot be found elsewhere. This is what makes them priceless. All while also challenging us when we need it . They ground us, make us think beyond ourselves, and make life more exciting, all at the same time.

| | Another Breeder's Point Of View | | |
From Adrienne Dymesich on Facebook who breeds Morgan Sport Horses
Fellow Morgan breeders, for the sake of your program, for the sake of the future of the Morgan breed, and for the sake of the public respect of the horses you are producing, DO NOT under sell your horses. There should be a market standard of more than adequately covering your actual costs AND time investment. The fact is, if a buyer cannot afford to pay what your foal or saddle horse is worth, they very likely cannot afford to care for that horse well either. Folks just have to learn to SAVE UP and pinch pennies for the initial purchase price. For goodness sake, sell that ATV or boat or something. For repeat buyers or people I know well and trust I do offer financing along with insurance to help them make that purchase of the quality horse of their dreams.
Market your horses through EquineNow and breed specific Facebook groups, but make sure you have done the handling so your babies are not feral and get professional quality photos and videos right from the get go. GET THE HORSES REGISTERED, do the DNA tests, and make sure they are upto date on basic vaccinations and regular deworming. The AMHA registry needs support from all types of Morgan breds not just the show lines. Send them your stories and photos. Let them know what you are accomplishing in the open competitions in your discipline. BE a active part of the change there!
Here's to a positive outlook on the future of the Morgan breed in 2026. Yes MANY breeders are aging out and ending their programs and others are quiting from exhaustion and rising costs that aren't getting covered, but there are some outstanding enthusiastic young programs succeeding and producing quality stock for the future of the breed.
Want to support the Morgan, buy from a reputable breeder. There is more benefit to the future of the breed in doing that than "saving" some passed around problem horse from a rescue, though that is kind too. The future is in the breeders!
...............
Every morning I wake up with the first light. I am ready to face whatever the day may bring. It could be sun or rain or sleet or snow. Those initial moments on the tougher days can feel hard. But that first welcoming whinny echoes the instant I step outside. It changes my outlook into one of pure gratitude and joy for another day ahead.
As I make my rounds on the farm I tend to the babies and mares and stallions and youngsters with their morning feed. A profound sense of purpose washes over me. I am living my dream. For that I feel incredibly blessed. Yet this life is not all easy pastures. It comes with real challenges. I often reflect on its long term sustainability for me and my family.
What outsiders rarely see is the nonstop behind the scenes work of running a farm like this. There is the endless cycle of mending fences. We spread fertilizer on the pastures. We sow seeds come spring. We manage water systems. We pay hefty power bills. We maintain tractors and trailers. We cover fuel costs. And that is before the big ticket items like soaring vet bills and vaccinations and registrations and essential supplies. Layer on the ongoing necessities. Premium quality feed and hay and supplements and regular farrier visits ensure every pony develops strong sound hooves and a solid foundation for their future. These are not luxuries. They are investments in health and performance that add up quickly. They often exceed several thousand dollars per year per young pony just in routine care.
As the old adage goes if you do what you love you will never work a day in your life. But passion alone does not pay the bills or secure your family's well being. There must be a delicate balance to make it all worthwhile.
My dedication to breeding and raising top tier hunter pony prospects begins long before a foal ever hits the ground. It starts with meticulous genetic research drawn from years of hands on experience. I pour over bloodlines from our proven past producers. I track current stars dominating the show rings. Selecting both elite broodmares and stallions is no small feat or expense. Proven performers in the hunter ring or exceptional broodmares and sires embody generations of selective breeding. They command premiums that reflect their value. It requires a skillful eye to match the best qualities ensuring the highest potential in offspring. I carefully pair them to craft the ideal prospect. One that boasts exceptional movement and an impressive jump and an unflappable temperament and impeccable conformation. All tailored for success in the pony hunter divisions. Like many reputable breeders I aim for a handful of foals each season. The foaling window stretches from a month to several. That magical three hundred twenty day gestation mark is a brief sigh of relief after ten or eleven months of vigilant care. But worry lingers. Nights grow longer. They blend fear and anticipation and exhilaration.
The real work intensifies post birth. My responsibilities multiply tenfold. From that very first breath I have committed to myself and to the foal and to future owners to nurture it with a gentle yet firm approach. I provide the absolute best launch into life. This means balanced high quality nutrition to foster robust bone and muscle growth. Consistent farrier trims every five to six weeks at a minimum of fifty dollars a pop promote proper hoof development and ensuring ponies learn properly to stand for a farrier, skills that the older they get the more dangerous they are. Same with routine veterinary check ups costing at a minimum of three hundred dollars annually nip issues in the bud. Annual dental exams and floats to maintain proper oral health and prevent future complications. Daily handling cultivates a confident people oriented demeanor ready for the demands of competition.
This unwavering commitment is exhausting. It is often underappreciated. And yes it is sometimes heartbreaking. The journey from conception to the foal's birth and initial vet clearance can tally at a minimum of six thousand five hundred dollars. We assume no complications and a refusal to cut corners. Stud fees for stallions with championship pedigrees alone range from at a minimum of one thousand dollars. They do not include veterinary cycles and ultrasounds and mare maintenance that push totals higher. And raising that prospect through one to three years? It layers on thousands more in accumulated care. We build a pony that is not just alive but thriving. Sound and well conformed and primed for a stellar career under saddle. These substantial investments explain why young hunter pony prospects from established reputable breeders like myself command starting prices at a premium to make it make sense. Not to
make money, to survive. The stepped pricing mirrors those extra months of devoted raising and genetic health assurances and the inherent worth of superior bloodlines that forecast not just talent but enduring athleticism and show ring triumphs.
In an era where bargain hunting reigns supreme it is crucial to remember you truly get what you pay for. Especially online. With current trends showing more buyers chasing "deals" on hunter jumper ponies amid economic pressures and skyrocketing prices—often turning to social media or classifieds for prospects under five figures in hopes of flipping babies or snagging undervalued gems—it has opened the door to rampant fraud. Reputable breeders like me steer clear of these pitfalls through full transparency—no hidden histories, direct owner-to-buyer dealings, written disclosures of all medical treatments, and a refusal to cut corners that could mislead anyone. Opting for a quality hunter pony from a reputable breeder is not an expense. It is a savvy long term investment that safeguards your dreams and delivers compounding returns. Think about the success stories. Thanks to their rock-solid foundations, ponies from esteemed operations have skyrocketed to national acclaim. They win at prestigious events like Devon or Pony Finals. They appreciate in value from modest young prospect. The perks of choosing reputable breeders extend far beyond the pony itself. We offer in-depth knowledge of genetics to match the best pairings for superior foals and dedication through proper care and ongoing support that private sellers these shady dealers simply cannot match. This means fewer surprises like hidden health woes or behavioral quirks that drain your wallet in vet bills or training fixes. Instead you gain a resilient talented partner that holds its value. It excels in competition. It often multiplies your initial outlay through resale or prize winnings. Hunting for a premium one year old pony hunter prospect under 8-
15 thousand dollars? Or a two year old 15 thousand? Or a three year old under 20 thousand? It is simply unrealistic if you are seeking one meticulously bred from champion lines. Nurtured with expertise and guaranteed by a breeder's hard earned reputation. Settle for less and you risk a pony that has been shuffled around or overlooked or burdened with flaws. This leads to frustration and extra costs.

A Change At The Morgan
Horse Magazine
| | |
After 17 years at the helm, The Morgan Horse magazine Senior Editor Stephen Kinney has announced his long-anticipated retirement to be effective following the March 2026 Trainer issue. All of us at AMHA express our sincere gratitude to Stephen for continuing to extend his career as his team consistently delivered our award-winning publication. He says he is especially “gratified at the success of the magazine as a financial asset for AMHA, and of the enormous efforts of our small staff to perpetuate the eighty-plus-year-old legacy of the official breed journal.”
Fellow Editor and ten-year team member, Kim Oplotnik, will be joining Stephen in retirement from the magazine later in the spring. Together they have brought us years of exceptional coverage of our beloved Morgan horses, and we are so very thankful for the platform they have constructed for AMHA to continue to build upon. Kim has shared that “while I am moving on from my current position, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the opportunities and connections that have been cultivated during my ten years as AMHA staff.”
AMHA is dedicated to preserving and promoting our Morgans and our breed journal. We will use this transition period to coordinate a smooth and seamless turnover of the editorial functions for our readers, advertisers, and members.
I am happy for them, but so very sad for us. These two have done a fabulous job for the Morgan breed and community. They will be hard to replace.

THIS INITIATIVE IS CURRENTLY ON TRACK TO BE ON THE BALLOT NOVEMBER 2026! TALK TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW SO THEY UNDERSTAND WHAT THIS IS AND WHAT IT WILL DO.
Read Everything you can find about it before you decide how to vote.
| | Oregon IP 28 – A Direct Threat to Animal Ownership and Agriculture | | |
December 30, 2025 by Brandi Ebner
Oregon Initiative Petition 28 (IP28) is a ballot initiative deceptively branded as the “People for the Elimination of Animal Cruelty Exemptions (PEACE) Act.” It represents one of the most aggressive assaults on animal ownership, agriculture, and private property rights ever proposed through a state ballot initiative. Despite its carefully crafted title and emotionally charged messaging, IP28 is not about improving animal welfare. It aims to criminalize lawful animal use, dismantle food production, and promote a long-standing animal liberation agenda through voter confusion rather than legislative debate.
This initiative is not hypothetical. It is not fringe. It is real, organized, funded, and dangerous.
The Broader Agenda Is Not Hidden
Perhaps most revealing is the rhetoric of IP28’s own advocates. Campaign leaders have openly stated that the goal is not to improve animal care but to eliminate animal use entirely, including food, research, hunting, and breeding. This initiative is based on a radical ideological belief that humans have no legitimate right to use animals under any circumstances. That belief conflicts with modern agriculture, food security, wildlife management, and private property rights.
What IP28 Does
Under current Oregon law, animal cruelty statutes include specific exemptions for lawful activities involving animals, recognizing that livestock production, veterinary medicine, wildlife management, research, and working animals are governed by science-based animal husbandry standards rather than criminal law. IP28 removes those exemptions.
The removal of those exemptions would make farmers, ranchers, veterinarians, pet owners, trainers, hunters, and researchers face felony and misdemeanor charges for activities that are currently legal, humane, and necessary. The initiative does not significantly improve enforcement against true abuse. Oregon already has strong animal cruelty laws. IP28 instead redefines normal animal care as criminal behavior. If passed, IP28 would criminalize:
- Harvesting livestock for food, fiber, pharmaceuticals, and other everyday products
- Livestock breeding and reproduction
- Harvesting wildlife for food, like hunting and fishing
- Wildlife population control
- Common pest control methods
- Standard veterinary procedures such as artificial insemination and castration, which the initiative relabels as “sexual assault”
A Repeated, Escalating Campaign Against Animal Ownership
IP28 is the third version of the same radical idea promoted by animal liberation activists in Oregon over multiple election cycles. Earlier versions, IP13 (2022) and Petition 3/IP3 (2024), did not qualify for the ballot, but not because voters rejected them. They failed because organizers couldn’t gather enough signatures. Each time, supporters regrouped, rebranded, and returned with more funding and sharper messaging.
Supporters explicitly recognize IP28 as a revised version of IP3, designed to go further and eliminate all remaining statutory exemptions that presently allow lawful animal husbandry, veterinary care, hunting, fishing, and food production.
This Time Is Different: Over 80,000 Signatures and Counting
Unlike the previous attempts of IP3 and IP13, IP28 is now backed by significant outside funding and an organized paid signature-gathering operation. Petition circulators are being paid up to $25 per hour, and are funded by national animal rights organizations, including People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Direct Action Everywhere (DxE), and the Karuna Foundation.
As of late 2025, IP28 supporters have publicly reported gathering over 80,000 signatures, bringing the initiative close to the roughly 117,000 signatures needed to qualify for the November 2026 ballot. This is no longer speculation. IP28 is a genuine and imminent threat.
Ballot Initiatives and the Danger of Voter Deception
IP28’s greatest strength and greatest danger lie in the ballot initiative process itself. Ballot initiatives skip the legislative process entirely. They do not go through committee hearings, lack expert testimony, and offer no chance for amendments. Instead, voters see a brief, emotionally appealing summary that often hides the true legal consequences found in the statutory language.
Animal rights groups have openly admitted that ballot initiatives are their most effective tool for promoting policies that can’t pass legislative review. IP28 fits directly into that approach. Once such a measure reaches the ballot, defeating it becomes much harder, especially when urban voters are asked to weigh in via their votes on agricultural practices they don’t understand but are told by activist groups are “cruel.”
Conclusion: Oregon Must Not Become the Test Case
If IP28 passes, even narrowly, it will not stop in Oregon. It will become a national blueprint, replicated state by state, using the same misleading language and emotional tactics. Oregon voters, policymakers, and agricultural communities must recognize IP28 for what it is: a calculated attempt to criminalize animal ownership, collapse animal agriculture, and rewrite property law through voter confusion.
The time to act is before this measure reaches the ballot. Once it does, the cost to agriculture, to rural communities, and to property rights will be far higher.

In today’s competitive marketplace, visibility and credibility are everything—especially in the equine industry. Joining the Oregon Horse Council (OHC) gives your business a powerful marketing advantage while aligning you with the only statewide organization dedicated exclusively to Oregon’s horse industry.
OHC actively promotes its member businesses to horse owners, industry professionals, event producers, and the general public across Oregon. Membership includes placement in the Oregon Horse Directory, a widely used resource for equine services that helps potential clients find trusted businesses by discipline, service type, and region. For many members, the directory alone drives valuable leads and long-term client relationships.
Beyond the directory, OHC regularly highlights member businesses through its website, email newsletters, social media platforms, and industry outreach efforts. These promotions position your business as reputable, professional, and engaged in the broader equine community—building trust with customers before they ever pick up the phone. When OHC speaks, the industry listens, and members benefit from that amplified reach.
OHC also markets the industry itself, which benefits every equine business in Oregon. Through public education, events, partnerships, and legislative engagement, the Council works to elevate the visibility and value of horses in our state. A stronger, more recognized equine industry means more participation, more events, and more demand for equine services—directly supporting your bottom line.
Membership signals that your business is invested in professionalism, advocacy, and the future of Oregon’s horse community. It tells clients you are connected, informed, and part of a trusted statewide network.
If you want to grow your reach, strengthen your brand, and be promoted alongside Oregon’s leading equine businesses, the Oregon Horse Council is more than a membership—it’s a marketing partner.

There are three levels of membership: $50, $100, or $250. You decide based on the level of support you are looking for.
