From Your Board Of Directors
Hi everyone,
Wow! Show season is in full swing and summer is moving along very fast! We are coming off a very successful and fun Oregon Morgan Classic. Thank you to all who worked so hard to make the show go well, and to all those who sponsored &/or participated. We had a record number of horses this year.
I hope everyone is having a chance to enjoy their horses. There is no shortage of equine activities out there.
| |
|
Don't forget to turn in your competition results for MHAO High Point tracking. We also offer the Open Incentive program for reimbursement of some of your open showing or other equine event costs. And then there is the Ride/Drive program. Be sure to keep them in mind. We will highlight those two programs over the next few months, but you can also find information about them on our website.
Meantime, I am praying we can get thru this year without a lot of large fires going on. Fire season started early this year and the weather is stacking up to be on the warm side. I know we will all do what we can. Think ahead and be ready, just in case.
Upcoming for MHAO is the annual Foal Photo Contest that closes October 31st. Get your cameras out! The Oregon State Fair Horse Show offers the Battle of the Breeds for any Morgan owners who are interested. Let Erin Silver know. Then after Nationals we will have our year end General Membership Meeting and Award Banquet which includes our annual election. Are you interested in being a Board Member for MHAO? Let me know if you are. We are always looking for volunteers as committee members, too. There is always more work to be done to serve our members and to promote the Morgan horse.
Good luck at any competitions you go to or trails you decide to ride (or drive). Enjoy the good weather and stay safe.

MHAO Breeders' Cup Futurity
Nominate Your Foal Today!
Our futurity was created in recognition of the importance of stallion owners, breeders and trainers to the preservation and continuation of the Morgan breed in our area. The mission of the futurity program is to aid in the promotion and development of horses owned by MHAO members. It is designed as a 5-year plan that follows a new born foal through its 4-year-old show season. Futurity classes are held at the Oregon Morgan Classic horse show in Eugene OR. More information can be found on the Auction/Futurity website or by reviewing the Futurity rules via the links below:
Click here to access the latest version of the MHAO Futurity Rules
Here is a link to the auction & futurity website:

Recent change:
We have expanded the Futurity halter classes into two equal Divisions. One is traditional, just like the halter classes we have always offered. The other is for Sport/Western horses. Both divisions now offer 2 classes for weanlings (colt and filly), and3 classes (stallion, mare, & gelding) for yearlings and for 2-yr-olds. Both divisions offer a Sweepstakes class for all futurity horses placing 1st or 2nd in their qualifying futurity halter class. Horses shown in the Sport/Western division are to be judged standing square. No cross entry is allowed between the 2 futurity divisions in any one year. Judging follows USEF rules. No change was made to any of the performance classes offered. All futurity horses are encouraged to enter any of the futurity performance classes. The 3-yr-old Futurity saddle classes remain as walk-trot.
At the Oregon Morgan Classic, these changes were all well received. I am still working thru some accounting issues, but prize money payouts should be out by month end.
For questions contact Gay Adams, (503) 936-4276
Benefits For Entering The Futurity:
- Prize money is earned for showing your horse in Futurity classes at the Oregon Morgan Classic. Those who have shown have earned back more than they have paid in for futurity fees.

INGREDIENTS FOR STRONG, DURABLE HOOVES
Lysine and Methionine are amino acids, the building blocks for proteins, and are essential for hoof growth as the hoof wall is 93% protein. Methionine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that is a primary constituent of keratin, the hard protein that makes up the hoof horn.
Zinc is necessary for the normal functioning of the cells that produce the hoof wall. Zinc-dependent enzymes are involved in keratinization and the hardening of the hoof.
Copper Gluconate is involved in connecting hoof cells. Low dietary levels of copper are often associated with weak or damaged hooves.
Biotin is significant for both hoof growth and hoof horn quality. It also is involved in hoof strength, as it is an element of the intercellular glue that binds hoof cells together.
Manganese is a mineral incorporated in the equine hoof horn and provides strength to the hoof wall and foot structures.
Cobalt Chelate is a precursor for vitamin B12, which is involved in blood cell formation to nourish hoof tissue.
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:
- IT IS A SLOW PROCESS
-
FEED DAILY
-
PAIR WITH WELLNESS
New hoof growth is a slow process. It takes 9-12 months for hoof tissue to grow from the coronary band to the weight-bearing surface.
“One of the biggest things that I see when people start feeding a hoof supplement is that they get discouraged and stop the supplement when they don’t see immediate results in improved hoof quality. The nutrients we are providing through feed and supplementation are only feeding the keratinocytes at the coronary band, which are the cells that produce hoof wall, not the hoof that we see closest to the ground. It takes anywhere from 9 months to a full year for the hoof being generated by these cells at the coronary band to reach the ground. This is a very slow process.”

AMHA Youth of the Year Program
Morgan horses have long been defined by their ability to suit people with varying interests. Similarly, AMHA believes that Morgan youths should also be versatile.
Youth of the Year contests are designed to recognize top achievers. Youth of the Year contests consist of four parts: a written exam, an oral presentation, a judging contest and a horsemanship pattern. Each section of the contest is worth approximately 250 points. Many contests offer divisions for the leadline, walk-trot, and junior aged exhibitors. Expectations for these divisions are modified to be appropriate for the age of contestants. Please contact your local contest organizer for more information on the divisions being offered at your local contest.
Youth who win the Senior division or who score over 800 points in the Senior division at local contests qualify to compete for AMHA Youth of the Year at the Grand National & World Championship Morgan Horse Show in Oklahoma City. The winner of this prestigious title receives a unique prize package customized by the winner valued at $3,500. The reserve winner receives a unique prize package customized by the reserve winner valued at $1,500. Local and regional contests are open to youth of all ages, but only those aged 14 years and older can qualify to compete in Oklahoma.
Why should you compete in a Youth of the Year Contest? Youth of the Year contests reward those who are well-versed in horsemanship skills. They provide a wonderful opportunity to improve one's horse knowledge as well as a means of setting realistic goals and learning the benefits of hard work and dedication. Most importantly, youth contests create a positive atmosphere in which young people and adults who share a love of the Morgan can interact. Friendships developed through youth contests are a rewarding and fulfilling benefit. How can you become involved?
Sign up to participate or volunteer in a youth contest! There is no better time to become involved than right now! Every region offers Youth of the Year contests, so keep your eyes open. Discover where the next contest is being held. You have nothing to lose and lots to gain!

LittleWood Rio Bravado
(Primavera Bravado x Willowrun Hayli)
2001 - 2023
| |
These pictures came up in my memories today. And I realized it’s time. Time to share our grief with our greater circle of family and friends.
On May 8, LittleWood Rio Bravado crossed the Rainbow bridge to gather cows on the other side. He wasn’t sick or injured, just gone. For 22 years, he changed our life, and for the rest of our days we will miss him. We didn’t lose a horse, we lost a work partner, a trusted friend, a mentor and part of our story.
It’s been an incredibly busy spring with a lot of emotional and demanding elements. Forgive me if we really couldn’t unpack our grief publicly. I wouldn’t have held up under your sympathy and I didn’t have space to crumble.
Amie Taber
I hope that time will ease your pain. He will live on in his foals and in your hearts.

Born To Boogie
(TVM I Promise x J'st Coast'n Countess)
1990 - 2023
| |
Some horses are extra special and you feel incredibly honored to be able to care for them. It is with great sadness that I announce that Born to Boogie crossed the rainbow bridge today. To say Boogie was a Morgan Icon would be an understatement. He was small but mighty and lived everyday with so much spunk and spirit! He came in and out of turn out everyday bouncing and dancing like the show horse that he was. His loss will be felt by all of us but mostly his loving owner of 31 years, Bryna Watson, who loved him with all of her heart. Run free handsome! There must be a pretty important horse show in heaven that they needed you to attend! Your legend will live on in all of your offspring. You truly left your mark on the breed and on our hearts!! We will miss you!
He will live on thru his many offspring. What a long and wonderful life he had.

Kerry Bay
(Kerry Freedom x Kerry Hallelujah)
2002 - 2023
|
Kerry Bay suffered a stroke and was humanely euthanized July 9th. Bay was the last of the Morgans we originally brought out from Illinois. She leaves behind 3 sons and 3 daughters. Daughters Kerry Treasure and Kerry Ara-B will continue her blood for our future. All 3 of her offspring who have been shown are champions. She was one of our 6th generation of Morgans.
Sharon Harper, Kerry Morgans
Our hearts go out to Sharon & Shannon Harper on this loss.

Doana Anderson shared this information about the passing of her Uncle Phil:
"Phil Peterson passed away on June 17th due to aggressive complications from cancer. It was unexpected for the family as he did not let on how sick he was. You may have seen him at past shows when we were with Jean Sauer. He owned PBP Princess Love A Lee and still owns PBP Prince Sonny Lee (2005) both by Rum Brook Immortal Prince x ATMF Love Lee Lady. He also has another gelding, PBP Theodore J Lee (1998).
Both Sonny and Teddy are at his home in Aurora being taken card of by family friends who stop by to feed and clean the stalls. Teddy is blind and Sonny is his buddy. It was not until we went to check the horses that we realized Phil was not able to care for them. Both horses are very underweight, but otherwise seem okay. We are bringing their weight up and working with Equus Vet to obtain health certificates. The vet is not confident that Teddy would be successful moving to a new place due to his condition, age and blindness, so we are in a tough position. Teddy will need someone to care for him on a daily basis. Sonny is faring better. I think the last time they were trailered was during the fires last year when Phil took them up to Clark County Fairgounds.
Sonny has had a lot of training in Western and Hunt Seat, all with Jean Sauer. He is eager to please and will make a good partner once he is back in shape."
Doana Anderson
Doana has since advised that they have decided to let Teddy go over the rainbow bridge. I am sure Phil will be waiting for him. But they are already making progress bringing Sonny back to good health. He may be available at a later time.
Shelley Bullard
My heart goes out to Doana Anderson and Theresa Peterson and the whole family. Our prayers to all. We are here if we can help in any way.
