From Your Board Of Directors
|
Hi all,
Thank you to all who attended the Oregon Morgan Classic this year. It was such a joy to see you. Entries were down due to a scheduling conflict with the Charity Fair Horse Show in Del Mar, but we still had a well executed event. Karen Breckenridge and her family and the whole OMC team did a great job. We hope you enjoyed it. Our show team overcame many obstacles this year to keep things running smoothly and to keep everyone fed. Special thanks for that to our team and especially to Kathy & Mike Christensen.
We are looking into what we can do to keep the scheduling conflict with the show in Del Mar from happening again. We will let you know how things work out. In combination with this we are also looking for a way to move our date to at least a week later.
| |
|
|
In addition a huge thank you goes to all our show sponsors, donors to the Silent Auction, staff, and all our volunteers. It takes a village! We could not do what we do without you. If anyone has pictures or comments they would like to share about the show, please send them to me. I will be working on a special Stable Sheet Edition that will highlight the show.
Next up will be member promotion of the Morgan horse at the Oregon State Fair. Let Erin Silver know if you would like to participate. We will again strive to have entries in the Challenge of the Breeds as well as Morgan and Open classes. Lorraine Beaumont is our Promotion Chair. There will be information set up by where the horses are stabled. We would love to have people there to share their knowledge and love of our breed when people come by. The Fair is a great place to promote the Morgan horse.
Remember to turn in the results of any competitions you enter in any discipline to Erin Silver. She is our High Point Chair. MHAO offers a full array of High Point Awards for all disciplines with wonderful prizes. The deadline to turn in your points is September 15th. Any points earned at Nationals will count for next year.
Do you show in open competitions (not at a Morgan show)? Be aware of our Open Incentive Program. See more info later in this newsletter. This program includes any open activity where you take your Morgan horse and pay a fee. Clinics are another one of the examples. You can be reimbursed for up to $50 per membership per year. Detail is included in this newsletter. Contact Sandi Humphfres or Karen Breckenridge about any questions you might have.
Sandi Humphfres is your contact to send information on any hours in the saddle or driving for our Ride/Drive program. See the information below in this newsletter for more details. There are a few exceptions. These hours do not need to be in competitions. If you are not enrolled yet, please get your enrollment form in. Everyone who rides or drives their Morgan should be enrolled. There are rewards for different milestones reached. They will be announced and handed out at our Award Banquet.
Our Award Banquet will again be at the Willamette Heritage Center (Dye House) in Salem on November 10th. Please save the date! We would love to see you there! We will furnish your meal. We are wanting to change up the program to be more of a celebration type event. More information will follow. If you have some ideas let Tammy Boyer know.
As we wind up our year we are again looking for volunteers and for those who might be interested in serving on our Board of Directors. This is your club. Everything we do is with you in mind. Let me know if you would like to share your skills, energy, and ideas in support of the club's effort to serve our membership and to promote the Morgan horse. Ballots will be going out for our annual election on or by October 10th.
Stay safe, stay cool, and stay well out there. Speaking for the Board, it breaks all our hearts to see all the fires that are going on in our state and beyond. If you need help, let me know so I can spread the word to our membership on your behalf. Julie Nygaard is the Chair of our emergency fund. Our prayers and good wishes go out for all of you and for our firefighters and other first responders.

I cannot say thank you enough to all those who came to the Oregon Morgan Classic this year. Nor can I say enough about the wonderful team of people who work so hard to make our show a success. We had many challenges and surprises including a scheduling conflict with the Charity Fair Horse Show in Del Mar, but our team of people pulled together to solve every issue. The show went on without a hitch. Along with the people listed above, there were many volunteers who are included as part of the team. I know I cannot remember all of them. Thank you to everyone. Special thanks to Mike & Kathy Christensen who jumped in when we realized the Feed Room restaurant would not be open. They adapted our plans for the show to be sure there was coffee, doughnuts, and food available for our exhibitors. Julie Nygaard worked with Sierra Breckenridge on the Youth of the Year. Julie is also the secret behind those wonderful thank you baskets for our sponsors.
We hope everyone enjoyed the show. We are looking into what we can do to keep the scheduling conflict with the show in Del Mar from happening again. We will let you know how things work out. It is our hope to move the OMC show to one week later. More information will follow.
If you have ideas for the Oregon Morgan Classic, please contact our Show Chair, Karen Breckenridge, wylieriley@aol.com with a copy to me at sunstonemorgans@comcast.net.
I'm looking for pictures from OMC to create a special edition of the Stable Sheet highlighting the show. At your earliest convenience, please send your photos and comments to sunstonemorgans@comcast.net. This issue will include a show summary written by Liz Goldmann.
Thank you!

WDAA World Championship Show Future Stars Will be Awarded through the Lynn Palm Western Dressage Fund
Since 2021, the Lynn Palm Western Dressage Fund has awarded outstanding junior riders for their efforts at the annual WDAA World Championship Show with the Lynn Palm Future Star Award. In its early years as a single award to the highest scoring junior rider, it has since evolved into a $500 award for the highest scoring junior rider at each level from Introductory through Level 5, potentially awarding a total of $3500.
In keeping with the utmost integrity and quality of horses and riders, the qualifications for eligibility are such that each score must be a minimum of 65% with a minimum of 5 riders in each Level. These parameters are set forth to encourage participation among junior riders and have them strive for excellence in their performances.
Previous Future Star Award winners hailed from Florida, Colorado, Alabama and Texas in Introductory through Level 3 partnered with several different breeds. It is wonderful to see growth of the sport for juniors but there is always room for more. Lynn Palm is proud to support the up-and-coming riders. “I always look to the future of our sport. The young riders are growing in numbers and skill level. My hope is that each winner of the Future Star Award continues to represent Western dressage in a way that spreads the message of sound training and harmonious partnerships with exemplary sportsmanship.”
The Lynn Palm Future Star Award enables promising youth riders to continue their Western dressage training and education and will be awarded annually at the WDAA World Championship Show. For junior riders to enter the 2024 show, information is available at wdaaworldshow.org with entries opening August 1 and closing August 30.

BLM Gives Land For Equestrian Only Trails
|
Trail and endurance riders, take note: BLM to give 1280 acres to Equestrians to create ‘Equestrian Only’ Trails known as the Fredenburg Trails
In the fall of 2023 Butte Falls held public meetings asking for input on what trail user groups wanted regarding the 400 acres that was purchased around Butte Falls. All user groups were in attendance. This acreage was purchased as a protective barrier from future fires, as the town barely escaped the Obenchain fire which came within a quarter mile. …

Proposed New Equestrian Trail in
The Columbia Gorge
| |
|
Proposed New Trail In The Columbia Gorge - April 30, 2024 by Back Country Horsemen of Oregon
In the summer of 2023 a collaborative group began to develop a plan to create a recreational trail that was originally conceptualized in the Management Plan for the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.
The area is a mix of USFS, state and private land, all of which is within the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area. The “Mosier To The Dalles Trail” would lie between Oregon Hwy 30 and State Rd/Sevenmile Hill Rd. On the east end at The Dalles city limits Wasco County acquired 187 acres for “recreational purposes”. That property borders the Fort Dalles Riders Club property. The project is being led by Friends of The Gorge and the USFS. Also included in the planning are area Tribes, Wasco County, the cities of Mosier and The Dalles, community representatives and other interested parties and individuals.
The first comment period results by users were (in order of number of responders) – 1) hikers, 2) bicyclists, 3) other, 4) equestrians. We do not know what makes up the “other” category. There are many questions yet unanswered – access points, parking (especially for trailers), and are e-bikes included to mention a few.
The date of the spring open house and second comment period have not been set, but it is important that equestrians be heard when they are. Project information and maps can be viewed at www.mosiertothedallestrail.org and to sign up for email updates. The form includes a space to identify an affiliation with an organization.
About Back Country Horsemen of Oregon

Through our principals we advocate for private recreational pack and saddle stock use of all public lands and the stewardship of those lands. The Back Country Horsemen of America is the only national organization that promotes the use of private recreational pack and saddle stock use on our public lands. www.bcho.com

A Tribute To Tri Star's Opening Act
AKA Spencer
| |
|
One year ago, at the very minute I write this, I was driving to Corvallis, OR bringing Spencer to Oregon State Veterinary Hospital. It was his last trailer ride. We said goodbye that day . . . a soul shattering day in my life. I couldn’t write about it last year; still hard today. Spencer was my everything. No, he wasn’t a world champion show horse. In fact, he never won a blue ribbon, always red. But for this small-town New Hampshire girl, he was my dream come true . . . the horse that I wanted since I was five years old. He was the first foal on my farm and so named Tri Star’s Opening Act. He looked like a little fawn; so beautiful. A gentle soul, he was a compliant child from birth; always wanted to please. Loved people. Always tried hard to figure things out. He grew up to be a handsome, trustworthy partner for me as we traveled many paths for the next 25 years. Showing was okay for Spencer. He did his best . . . but his heart was “on the trail”. He LOVED traveling the trails through the many mountains and parks that we toured throughout the great Pacific Northwest. The vistas we saw, the bridges we crossed, the streams he refreshed in, the meadows he grazed in, the camping we did in the mountains and at the beach . . . Spencer was always the “dependable one”, the trusted trail lead for green horses who needed a confidence boost. He was truly a gem. Okay, he was not a saint. His lips could undo any lock in an instant; even when he had multiple locks on his door. An escape artist he was! Quite a rascal who would rummage all the grain buckets or tack trunks in the aisle . . . he could open them all, always looking for treats. He never really wanted to escape . . . it was all a game to him. His way of having fun. In his last years, he prided himself on taking young riders from zero to competent rider. He could carry any child, any age. Spencer would always take good care of them. He really enjoyed moving out when they built up some skill and confidence. He instantly adjusted to each rider; he was truly a gentleman. So, on this one year remembrance of his passing, I remember all of the joy he brought, the solace he gave me, the laughter we shared but most of all, I remember putting my face in his neck and breathing in the essence of my “dream come true”. Spencer was a most precious gift who enriched my life beyond measure . . . Munch on those lush green pastures my beautiful boy . . . until we meet again.

Today, July 14, we had to say goodbye to our beloved Firecrest E-Ticket GCH . He was a once in a lifetime horse with a heart of gold. He got to live out his last 5 years back with us all living like the king he was only because Sammi knew who he needed to retire with. From the 1st time I laid eyes on him as a weanling in '97, I just knew I needed him in my life. When I bought him as a 3 year old, he was, barely broke, rowdy, naughty, obnoxious, destructive, but so smart and such a hunk. I felt like he had it all to become a Champion and I was right. So many times my dad would "get into the arenas" for our midnight rides, to get him broke without most people even knowing. He demanded all the attention and would stop people because of his presence. He was ahead of his time with his natural motion and elegance, he was truly a show horse that never stopped working for his riders. If you ever got to ride or show him, you are blessed and you know what a true western horse was. "Rocky" (AKA Walter) changed so many lives and his legacy will live on through his sons and daughters. No other Morgan has won as many times as he did in his career, simply the best!!! Rest in peace, Rocky (Walter, Rock Nuts, Angel Muffin, Daddy Shark, and maybe some other names I won't list :-).
Lela (Melissa) Van Dyk
Feel free to leave your favorite memories of this incredible stallion on Lela's Facebook page. She would love to hear them.
