Hi Everyone-
I must say that Mother Nature turned in a very interesting February to all of us here in the Pacific Northwest! From heavy snows, cold temperatures, and an historic ice storm she threw her best at us. In my area, we were without power for 7 days and I know many others had power out much longer. The ice was pretty on the trees but unfortunately many of the trees could not withstand the adornment. Truly an amazing amount of damage and aftermath was seen and felt by many. It was a trial for all of us, but we are now on the other side.

The days are getting longer, the sun is, dare I say, shining a little brighter and soon the time will change. We are marching into Spring and into the warmer weather. Before you know it, it will be June and we will be getting ready for the Oregon Morgan Classic, also known as OMC.
Speaking of OMC, I would like to get the word out about the show for both exhibitors and volunteers. Karen and Jim Breckenridge have been working very hard to make sure that we have a top notch show and are in the process of fine tuning the details. We are hoping that you as the members will be there to show your support either as exhibitors or volunteers. Your support is vital to the success of this show. Please consider showing your horse at OMC. There are a variety of classes for all disciplines. If you don't have a horse to show, we sure could use your help in volunteering for various roles. If you can't attend the show as an exhibitors or volunteer, please consider being a sponsor. There are many different levels of sponsorship available. We also offer a silent auction and are looking for donated items as well as bidders. You can help make this show a super event! We need you! Please consider being a part of the show in whatever way you can.
At the time of writing people are being vaccinated and that bodes well for all of us to be able to be together. Only time will tell what the restrictions will be at the show, but I think it is safe to say we will be in a better place than we were last year. Lets make this years OMC a special one! If you are interested in helping, being a sponsor, or donating to the silent auction please give me a call and I will make sure we get you on the team!

AMHA Congratulates 2021 van Schaik Dressage Scholarship Recipient
|
|
Kimberly on Gladheart Linhawk
The AMHA is proud to announce our 2021 van Schaik Dressage Scholarship recipient, Kimberlee Barker of Corvallis, Oregon. Kimberlee was chosen from a group of nine excellent candidates. Congratulations, Kimberlee!
Kimberleee has been involved with Morgans for over 20 years. In 2009, she began working with Jack and Nadette Stang’s Morgan horses and currently shows Gladheart Linhawk (Grand Prix) and Gladheart Black Harris (Fourth Level/FEI) and plans to add another, Gladheart Siletz (Intro/Training Level) this year.
Kimberlee stated, “I plan to continue to promote Morgans in Equine Expositions, clinics, and by competing in open dressage competitions. I feel one of the best ways to promote Morgans in dressage is by competition and taking advantage of more varied and public opportunities such as clinics and expositions. I will continue to utilize these events in the future.”
|
|
About the Scholarship…The van Schaik Dressage Scholarship is awarded in memory of Dr. H.L.M. van Schaik who fought to preserve the classical art of Horsemanship in Dressage. This scholarship is to aid an AMHA member in furthering his or her skill, knowledge, or proficiency in classically ridden Dressage. AMHA took over administration of this scholarship in the fall of 2015 and recently completed a restructuring of the program. Members must make application to be considered. Emphasis will be placed on helping a rider move from the lower levels of dressage to fourth level and above. Applicants who have competed their Morgan(s) at First Level Test 3 or above and received a 60 percent or higher score at a recognized competition will be given preference. Everyone with a passion for showing their Morgan in Dressage is encouraged to apply. (Note: Previous van Schaik Dressage Scholarship recipients are not eligible.) Additional information and the application are on our website at https://www.morganhorse.com/programs/van-schaik/.

Northwest Horse Fair & Expo
|
|
To say this last year has been full of uncertainty is an understatement. Like all of you we have felt the tremendous impact of COVID-19 in our personal and professional lives. We remained hopeful that the regularly scheduled 2021 Northwest Horse Fair & Expo would be held as scheduled. As the COVID-19 restrictions continued to stay in place we discussed alternate dates - first later in the spring, and then early fall. Unfortunately, with no indication of when and to what level restrictions may be eventually lifted, we see no clear path to holding a 2021 expo. We are instead planning for March of 2022 to return to the Linn County Fair & Expo Center in Albany, Oregon with renewed enthusiasm for being together in person and Celebrating the Spirit of the Horse.
Mark your calendar for March 25-27, 2022. We look forward to the day when we can all be together in person again.

Articles & Information From The Horse Network

Perhaps you’re already in the rhythm of planning immunizations for your horses and have scheduled a spring veterinary visit. Or, you could be setting a veterinary care budget for your new horse for the very first time. Either way, you likely have at least a few questions surrounding your horses’ vaccination protocols. Here, our sources will answer some common vaccination queries we’ve received from our readers.

In my youth, I pointedly pursued activities that I perceived as “macho,” and horses were decidedly not one of those. Who knew that it would take horses to ultimately teach me what it was to be a man?
My mom had genteel interests: she had been a ballerina, taught classical ballet and was an animal lover; we got along well, but I was my dad’s son: a tradesman, very mechanical, self-sufficient.
I spent my young adulthood and early middle age doing things that typified what I thought defined a “masculine” strength of character that I wanted to project. I chuckle when I realize that I found it in the pursuit of a sport in the English riding arena, something that at least in my area and at my level, is female dominated.
From the time that I was a child I, like most young boys at the time, chased that largely undefinable but very real quality known as “being a man.” It began with smoking, hard drinking, and building fast cars. It progressed to working in construction, flying airplanes, learning to jump out of them, off-roading—I was always finding new ways to indulge in risk-taking to a degree that I hoped would earn me that elusive title.
But as much I pursued it, it always seemed to stay just out of reach.
I met the first horse I would eventually ride while on an electrical construction project at a Long Island show barn. I became quite attracted to the horse, the riding, and horse people. It didn’t fit the mold of what I had decided was “manly” but two things happened:
1) I was developing a passion for horses and horsemanship to a degree that it would not be derailed by my preconceived notions and
2) I had gotten older and didn’t care as much how people perceived me.
I didn’t know it at the time, but I was letting go of my pursuit of “manliness” in order to follow the path on which my heart was taking me. In doing so, I discovered completely new definitions of what it was to be a man.
|
|
I learned the difference between controlling and cooperating. Airplanes are to be controlled, and that’s what my life was about when I was actively flying them. Horses are about cooperation, I was to learn, sometimes painfully. Imposing my will with iron-jawed determination only works for a little while with horses.
I learned how it is to truly put the needs of another being above my own. I had payed lip service to the concept in the past, but never owned it.
I learned powerlessness and what it feels like to just do the best I can, without any knowledge of what the ultimate result will be. I learned how to let go when letting go was the right thing to do.
I learned that “my way or the highway” does not fly with horses, and in learning that, I learned that it does not work very well with the humans in my life either. I learned, to a large extent, to ignore transgressions and not take them personally, and to be generous in rewarding when compliance is attempted.
I had sought out experiences to make me appear aggressive and brave, as I thought those were the makings of a man. The horse does not care how you appear; he knows what lurks in your soul and responds to only that. In horsemanship, we become honest or fail. I was taught all about honesty by these beings that live in a world that knows no other way, and found that total honesty in dealing with others requires more courage than aggression or threats.
I wanted to excel as a rider, and in doing so I was forced to live in their world, the world of the here and now. Moving forward required letting go of the past and not obsessing about the future. I learned to be playful and silly with these giant playmates who required no mind altering substances to facilitate it. I began to understand the concept of true partnership. I discovered what a gift it is to uncover and pursue your passion in life.
It’s a bunch of years later now, and through the benefit of hindsight I find myself confident and secure in the belief that the universe found horses as the way to help me become the man I was destined to be.

Thomas Gumbrecht began riding at age 45 and eventually was a competitor in lower level eventing and jumpers. Now a small farm owner, he spends his time working with his APHA eventer DannyBoy, his OTTB mare Lola, training her for a second career, and teaching his grandson about the joy of horses. He enjoys writing to share some of life’s breakthroughs toward which his horses have guided him.

AMHA Western Region Report - First Quarter
|
|
As the arctic blast is currently hitting much of the US and Canada, we think we can all agree that spring cannot come quick enough! Lots of competitions and shows for our Morgan horses are already in the works for a fun and safe 2021 season. The Carousel Charity Horse Show kicks off the Western region season March 10th-14th at Westworld of Scottsdale, AZ.
Although this was the last meeting for Kris Breyer as a Central Region Director, she was unanimously voted by the board as Director Emeritus. Kris has been a huge supporter of the Morgan Horse, has been instrumental in the development and implementation of Open Competition program and has been a figurehead on the Disciplines committee. If you see or talk to Kris, please thank her!
Speaking of the Disciplines committee, Christina Stewart was added as a committee member at the board meeting, we are lucky to have her fresh ideas. All of this is in addition to the promotion of Nicole Scovotti to Programs Manager and the addition of Molly McGuill as Programs Coordinator. I have a feeling that this committee is going to be cranking out some great stuff soon!
If you have not heard about or seen all the great things the Youth Steering committee, Nikki Scovotti and the AMHA Youth Council have been doing, you are missing out! Check them out on Facebook on the “AMHA Youth Network.” If you missed the episode of “The Morgan Horse Source” from February 3rd, featuring Karen Homer Brown it should be posted online for playback soon on the Members Only side of the morganhorse.com in the Programs tab under Youth Council.

|
Even with 2020 being a challenge across the board, the year ended up and is starting on some positive notes. The Registry had its best year in registrations since 2009, AMHA has processed 338 more memberships in January of 2021 than in 2020, which is also excellent news and the Morgan Horse Magazine continues to put out a high-quality product, the Breeding Guide has just hit mailboxes and WOW! Stallions of today and pages upon pages of breed research information.
The American Morgan Horse Educational Charitable Trust or ‘AMHECT’, which is our 501(c)3 organization, received some generous donations for year-end 2020. Watch for these funds to be used in new scholarship opportunities and to further the mission of education of the Morgan Horse. AMHECT’s website will be joining AMHA’s soon at morganhorse.com and there is also a new AMHECT Facebook page. Like it to stay on top of these opportunities.
Mark your summer calendars for the two Western Regional Morgan Horse Shows, Morgan Medallion is July 22-25 in Las Vegas, NV and C-Fair Charity is August 4-8 in Monroe, WA.
Please contact Terri, Mari, or Dallas with any questions, comments or concerns you might have. We have missed seeing many of you and would love to hear from you.
Your Western Region Directors,
Dallas Bolen, Mari Sanderson, Terri Sturm
