From Your Board Of Directors

From The President

Hi all,

It is snowing off and on as I write this, but that doesn't dampen or hide the feeling of Spring in the air. It is coming! Foals are being born - the culmination of long time dreams coming to life and promising things for the future. And the Northwest Show Season is almost here. The Key Classic is just around the corner.

If you haven't renewed your membership for this year, please do that now. We need our members. Without you, your club does not exist.

We have received a show grant from AMHA and a promotion grant. More details will be revealed in the March minutes you will see in early April.

Futurity renewals are due March 31st. Renewal requests will be out no later than 3/15. We hope you will stay in the Futurity and show off your vision of the Morgan horse.

Online bidding is open for the MHAO Stallion Service Auction. Nominations & donations are open through March. Watch for additions, and if you can help, please do. Having to upgrade the SSA/Futurity website in February put me way behind in my outreach. See more information later in this newsletter.

Your Board is hard at work, and definitely on a roll! The Spring Clinic is coming together. It is scheduled for April 5-7, 2024. We hope you will all attend the Clinic and the General Membership Meeting in Newberg OR. The General Membership Meeting will take place on Saturday over the lunch hour.

Ranch riding is an up-and-coming discipline, and Morgan horses are very good at it. But we need to not only understand the discipline, but to educate others who ride in the discipline about our breed. Judges need to know what they are looking at when they see us. Bring your horse. Or audit the clinic and share information with our facilitator. Limited riding spots are available. Register thru Patricia Carlson. Riding spots are open to all breeds now and will close March 24th. Bring your horse so others can see a Morgan in action. Lunch is free. Come see what "Ranch" riding is all about, network, and catch up with your Board of Directors. See you there!

Let Erin Silver and Lorraine Beaumont know if you can help at our promotional booth at the Oregon AgFest taking place at the State Fairgrounds in Salem, April 27-28, 2024. This is a great place to promote the Morgan Horse. Come be a part of it and help us brag a bit.

Happy Spring to everyone! I'm enjoying watching the days get longer. Don't forget to set your clocks forward on 3/10. I hope everyone is looking forward to more daylight and a fun year ahead.

MHAO Humanitarian Award

It is the intent of the MHAO Humanitarian Award to honor and thank those especially generous members who step forward when they are needed.

Qualifications:

1.Member of MHAO at time of service, or a member of the Morgan community.

2.Nominated by member or non-member

3.Submission of at least one brief written description of the nominee’s exceptional community service and impact.

Two more stallions have been added:

Devine Cool Hand Luke

JFE Just George

Under discussion:

I have received several suggestions to change the timing of our future auctions so that it closes earlier in the year. I am working on finding new ways to communicate with potential Amish bidders so we are not so dependent on when the TMH magazine comes out. Historically the Amish have played a significant part in the success of our auction. They are only able to see information about us in TMH or thru what we might mail to them. I have also tried to avoid having our auction going on at the same time another one is going on. I think both will do better if they are not competing with each other. That has pushed us into April timed just after the March issue has been delivered. If we can make a shift to our communications with the Amish, I may be able to move our close date into March. Do you have ideas on how we can achieve this? If successful, we will also need to move our search for stallions to earlier in the year. I am also looking at other months.

The new MHAO auction/futurity website is up and running! Take a look and let me know what you think. www.mhaostallionserviceauction.com

Don't Forget About The MHAO

Open Incentive Program.

Great for those who take their Morgan horse to open shows, clinics, competitive trail rides, or things that require a fee. See the examples below.

This program offers a reimbursement of up to $25 per event to a maximum of $50 per year per membership for any fees paid to enter your Morgan horse in open shows, clinics, trail rides, or basically anything you pay an entry fee for other than a Morgan show. Whenever you get your Morgan horse out and about, you are promoting our breed. This is our way to say thank you.

If you are willing, we would love you to have brochures available to handout. Just contact Lorraine Beaumont for handouts. Her phone number is (503) 364-4119.

Be aware, the reimbursement amount can change each year. A maximum of $50 is what is set for 2024. That is more than you pay to be a member of MHAO.

The AMHA Full Circle Program

AMHA is proud to sponsor Full Circle, a program to encourage individuals to provide a "safety net" for horses they bred, owned, trained, drove, cared for, or just admired.

The Full Circle program allows, at no charge, anyone with interest in a Morgan, to record his or her name and contact information in the AMHA record of that horse. If that horse should ever become unwanted, the individual with custody of the horse at that time can contact the AMHA Registry Department to see if the horse has been enrolled in Full Circle. Enrolled horses are also listed on our website.

Learn more about Full Circle Program.

Attention - 501(c)(3) Equine Rescues!

AMHA recognizes that positive identification is an important tool in the rescue and rehoming of Morgans at risk and has established a fund called “Dollars for DNA” to assist recognized 501(c)(3) rescues by providing free DNA testing kits.

To be eligible, complete and submit the verification form. Once your status is verified, you will be notified and may begin requesting the kits.

Dollars for DNA is funded 100% by donations. If you would like to contribute and ensure the future of this fund, please click HERE. Our Morgans "thank" you!

The Oregon Horse Council is excited to launch a new event to provide an opportunity for horse lovers to shop their favorite vendors. This inaugural event will be held in conjunction with the High Desert Stampede PRCA Rodeo, a well-attended event that kicks off the rodeo season in the greater NW, and the Central Oregon Ag Show. Our new Country Market will be Friday, April 5: 1-7 pm and Saturday, April 6: 9 am-7 pm at the Deschutes County Expo Center in the High Desert Activity Center.

Applications are now available – we are looking for a variety of western/ranch home decor, clothing, jewelry, tack, farm/ranch products, feed, and more! Vendors will enjoy the smooth concrete floor, restrooms, and ease for set-up and tear-down with multiple large doorways around the hall. A 10’x10′ booth is only $125, with corner spaces being $50 more. Table spaces (which will allow 1 8’x30″ table with 2 chairs behind it) is only $50.

Still some booths or tables available!

Insight Into The World Of Horse Shows Today

Volunteers & Sponsors Matter

Horse show friends pay attention. Everyone wants more affordable shows, better weekend prizes, added money and great year end prizes, right ? Everyone also complains that the shows have become too expensive, even though in all honesty we are now showing at some of the finest facilities ever, with great ground, excellent stalls and all weather access.

We have two choices when it comes to making our hobby more affordable. The first is to volunteer. In years past, 90% of shows were run by volunteers of the hosting affiliate. Moms would run the entry booth, dads worked the arena gate, family members took turns with arena set up and usually a non showing person would ring steward. The only paid person during the show was usually the judge. Now we have paid show secretaries , paid ring stewards, paid scribes, paid announcers, paid show managers and the list goes on and on.

The second way to help make our shows more affordable is to obtain sponsorships or join in fundraising. Again, in years past our classes were generally sponsored by a local business, our awards were often donated and club members would pull together to sell raffle tickets, 50/50 drawings, Calcuttas and the kids would have car washes and bake sales.

If you are showing at any level show in the coming year, think about ways you can help keep the shows affordable. If you'd like to volunteer at a higher level, maybe ask to join or head a committee. If you or a spouse have some free time at a show, offer to run the gate or set up a trail pattern. Learning to scribe is a fantastic way to hone your skills as an exhibitor as well as see through the eyes of a judge.

If you are asked to buy a raffle ticket or sponsor at any level, consider the benefits to both the clubs and your business by way of the advertising you'll get in return.

There's no doubt that showing horses is expensive. But if we all pitched in at any level at all, we can make a dent in the overhead of each association and usually those savings are passed along to the exhibitor.

A Tip From The American

Association Of Equine Practitioners

Did you know?

Although protein is normally listed as a nutrient, horses actually have a requirement for amino acids, the building blocks of protein, rather than for protein itself. Protein is the least efficient energy source for your horse, so high protein does not automatically equal high energy. Carbohydrates, fats, and fiber are more readily digestible energy sources, so chances are a horse with too much energy is being fed more calories than the animal truly needs.

As always, remember that all horses have different nutritional needs based age, stage of development, metabolism and workload. Be sure to work with your veterinarian to determine the correct protein and energy requirements for your equine friend based on your horse’s individual situation!
